In this episode of TT’s Living Room, I invited friends in New York at different life stages to talk about friendship. A few years after graduation, many of us have noticed how making friends—especially in a big city—differs from school: some still long for a core group, while others find one-on-one connections more natural. Some realize that widening their social circle makes certain friendships feel more “transactional,” while others turn hobby partners into acquaintances and eventually close friends. As Chinese living abroad—moving often, with friends scattered across the world—we also discussed periodic friendships, cross-cultural connections, setting boundaries, and the need to normalize the idea of a “friendship breakup.”

T’s Living Room’s first ever topic-focused discussion! In this candid and lively episode, we explore how Chinese people living long-term in the U.S. think about splitting the bill (AA) in dating and relationships.
Sharing a special conversation on the day before graduation. The guests are two close friends I met during my graduate program—Julio, who founded an education social enterprise around design thinking in Ecuador, and Wandy, who worked on educational equity within a governmental agency in Thailand. They were my teammates in many courses, and like me, both returned to school after several years of working.
We talked about working in education across different countries, our take on “watered-down” master’s programs at top U.S. schools like Columbia, how we find growth in and outside the system, and the challenges educators often face. It was an open and meaningful conversation—shared as a graduation gift to anyone who believes in the power of education, and to myself. Congratulations!

This episode explores the differences between working at large corporations and startups in the U.S. I really enjoyed the flow of the conversation—April left a career in tech consulting to join a machine learning startup, while Jojo transitioned from a banking S&T role to her current mission of helping Chinese companies expand overseas. We touched on topics like motivation and challenges at work, autonomy and becoming T-shaped professionals, identity, life’s core missions, and risk-taking. The guests shared thoughtful and insightful perspectives, and I learned a lot from the discussion. Hope it resonates with you too!

For T’s Living Room’s first group discussion, we invited several longtime friends who also spent 12+ years studying in UK or US high schools to chat about our diverse educational backgrounds. As old friends reunited, the conversation flowed naturally as we reminisced about our experiences as part of the "Parachute Generation." These educational journeys were not just memories filled with laughter and tears but also profoundly shaped our values, our lives, and our career development in the U.S..
