By the middle of the 2024 Saskatchewan provincial election campaign, Scott Moe could see that the NDP were gaining more support than he bargained for. What he said and did next changed some peoples lives forever. His political strategy and political decisions had real-life consequences. What was it that Scott Moe said? Did his strategy work out in his favour?

Saskatchewan is the birth place of healthcare, but with such a tiny trans population, is it possible to find gender affirming care here? What are the options and where do you find them if you are looking for support? What are some of the mental health implications when transitioning or coming out for trans folks and on their loved ones? Personal stories illustrate the journeys of families as they navigating these experiences together.

Life for Two-Spirit folks has its own unique challenges in Saskatchewan. Tanzy Janvier is a founder of Indigenous Teachers For Two-Spirit Youth and Lori Campbell is associate vice president Indigenous Engagement at the University of Regina and they are both strong Two-Spirit leaders. They explain how colonialism and the patriarch destroyed indigenous people’s view of gender and societal roles regarding the gender binary. How did residential schools and the Sixties Scoop affect Two-Spirit people? What is it like living in extremely isolated communities as a Two-Spirit person? And is there hope for future generations?

Traditionally Saskatchewan has been a fairly masculine place because of so many “male” jobs like farmer, rancher, miner, oil field workers and other trades. Is there toxic masculinity in Saskatchewan and if so does that make it harder for trans women to come out? What are the societal expectations and the challenges of living authentically in a conservative environment?

Urban life vs Rural life vs Faith
There are some stark differences between the urban and rural cultures in Saskatchewan, including types of faith and the amount of people prioritizing faith. There are many more buildings and people in the cities which means the town hall isn’t also the post office and only bar in town and your mom isn’t the mayor, school bus driver and the town’s only bank teller. What is it like living in a small town as a trans youth? Is it hard to come out later in life in rural areas? Do kids drive grain trucks to school and does anyone say watch for deer on your way home in the city?

Bill 137
In August of 2023, the education minister, Dustin Duncan and Saskatchewan Premier, Scott Moe created a policy that eventually became Bill 137. The passing of the bill was highly controversial to say the least as well as the bill itself. So what is bill 137 and what was the reason for it? How did it get passed? Is it even legal? What was the collateral damage?

Setting the Scene
Before I can bring you with me on my search for the trans agenda in Saskatchewan, I first need to explain a bit about Saskatchewan, and before I can delve into Saskatchewan specific trans experiences, I need to cover some universal trans issues, stereotypes and misconceptions. So where is and who are the people of Saskatchewan and how many times can I use the word Saskatchewan in one paragraph? Is it unsafe for women in public washrooms and change rooms because of trans women? Are sports being overrun with trans athletes? Why in God’s name are there children using litter boxes in schools and why are trans people to blame?
