EP#20: Are you taking more risk than the return you're receiving? Even if you have an advisor, do your own research to find this out.
If you're invested into the S&P 500, you have more risk than return based on historical data.
Large market cap companies doesn't necessarily mean the stock is a good investment. Take a look at what's happened to IBM over the past 40 years. You would have annualized around 3% return (not including dividend).
Deere & Co. (DE) stock on the other hand, has annualized around 20% over the past 5 years. It made the list in January 2023 but did not in October 2023.
Costco (COST) stock has annualized ~19% return over the past 5 years with ~15% risk. It also made the list in January 2023 but not in October 2023.
This can be used as a stock screener but remember to do your own research. Changes over just 9 months is short term and this doesn't mean that the next 9 months will look the same.
Just because a company has performed well, doesn't mean it has low risk or that it will continue.

Housing Units Started has been declining slowly over the past 2 years.
Fed Funds Rate may appear that inflation is under control. Let's see what happens over the next few months.
Will unemployment stay low or will we start seeing an uptick that adds more strain on the economy in 2024?

Throughout history, it's common for individuals to not know when we are months away from and/or in a recession. Since most investors won't know how close we are to a recession, the press about the S&P 500, or the overall stock market and economy, from financial institutions just builds a questionable confidence among retail investors...
As the S&P 500 approaches its all time high, it's important to be aware of past patterns around recessions.
During the past 8 recessions dating back to the 1960s, the S&P 500 has declined an average of 23.8% from the start of the recession to the low point in it when looking at monthly data.

EP#25: Are investing into quality assets?
The data shows that you can absolutely create a concentrated stock portfolio (with just 3-7 strong stocks) and beat the market. At the end of this podcast, I discuss a sample portfolio that performed very well historically.
While the S&P 500 has historically made an average return of about 5-10% annually over the long term (depending on when you invested in it), there are many companies in it that aren't strong.
It's easy and common to invest into companies without valuing the business.
By relying solely on someone else's stock predictions, you take away that power and your seat at the table of your own wealth.
You can value a business better by creating more accurate assumptions in your stock predictions. The more you understand about a business and it's core operations, the better predictions you will be able to make. Learn what the company's competitive advantages are too before investing into them.

So what is dollar cost averaging (DCA)?
Dollar Cost Averaging = investing at regular intervals regardless of the stock’s price in order to take your emotions out of investing. It’s based on buying both when the stock market is at a high and when it’s at a low creating an average cost per share.
This may work for some of you but I think you can do better.
Using patterns we can observe from past 8 recessions, on average the stock market has dropped over 20% from start to low point.
It’s possible to better time the market by understanding these patterns. A key indicator to look at that a recession is coming soon is the 10 year Treasury minus the 3-month T-Bill. You can read more about it on V.I. Digest here.

EP#11: Avoid information overload in the stock market and decode the economy.
Gaining confidence as an investor involves understanding the longer term patterns of the stock market. Nothing explains these patterns better than economic cycles.
NBER (National Bureau of Economic Research) is the organization that declares U.S. Recessions. Fortunately, NBER provides clarity around what a recession is and the data points they use to declare a recession.
It is clear that the stock market rises over time. There may be months where it is down, but overall the stock market has continued to rise in the long term.
Looking back at the past 8 recessions from the 1960s onward, from the time a recession started until the low point in the recession, the S&P 500 averaged a decline of about 24%. Understanding this could keep you ahead of the curve and help you invest when stocks are discounted.
