Reclaiming one's space, democratizing safety on the dance floor, mixing to foster dance AND thought, Boilerroom — a conversation with Montreal local DJ and label-owner BitterCaress

Should we stop partying when the world faces a crisis? What responsibility does rave culture really hold during times of political and social upheaval? Is the dancefloor political? Or should it remain untouched by corporatism and politics?

These are the questions we'll be answering with Ukrainian Dj Nastya Nvrslp in this episode of The Sleepwalker.

Anastasiia Hordiienko, better known under her DJ alias Nastya Nvrslp, is a rising star in the Montreal electronic music scene, captivating audiences with her electrifying sets and unique blend of raw techno, acid, groove, and old-school 90s beats. Born and raised in Ukraine, Nastya's journey to musical prominence took an unexpected turn when she made the courageous decision to relocate to Montreal.

"It's 1989, and rave culture is at its peak in England. Illegal raves are organized all over the country, in abandoned warehouses and other isolated locations. A cat-and-mouse game is played between the organizers and the police: but once a rave has started, the police have no way of stopping it."

In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats transports you to the scene of a typical rave, accompanied by the sounds of old-school Acid House.

Once known as Throwing Shade, Nabihah Iqbal has forged a reputation as an electronic musician, DJ and in-demand collaborator, working with visual artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans and curating this year’s multidisciplinary Brighton festival.

Deprived of her studio equipment after a burglary, followed by a family emergency in Pakistan in early 2020, Iqbal grew the sounds of 'Dreamer' more organically, working initially on harmonium and acoustic guitar.

As her North America tour comes to an end, I spoke with Nabihah about her approach to playing, making, and recording music and the mesmerizing sounds of her motherland, Pakistan.
