Ep 11: Spinal Manipulation in Children: Quackery or Care?
Ep 11: Spinal Manipulation in Children: Quackery or Care?

SHOW NOTES: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Cf1BCpcyHcR4d3Se5skFbwlhmKtzKX6T/view?usp=sharing

Is spinal manipulation in children a legitimate healthcare intervention—or a dangerous pseudoscience?

In this provocative episode, we tackle the contentious topic of paediatric spinal manipulation. Drawing from systematic reviews, real-world clinical examples, and expert commentary, we ask two critical questions: Is it safe and effective? And when—if ever—should it be used in paediatric care?

We explore the evidence (or lack thereof) behind treating conditions like colic, bedwetting, asthma, and headaches, and examine alarming case reports of serious adverse events, including rib fractures, respiratory failure, and neurological damage. From philosophical underpinnings to physiological realities, we shed light on why manipulating developing spines without rigorous evidence or training raises serious ethical concerns. Whether you're a healthcare professional, parent, or skeptic, this episode will challenge assumptions, deepen your understanding, and spark informed conversation about the role of spinal manipulation in modern paediatric healthcare.

Tune in and join us as we separate evidence from ideology—because when it comes to children’s health, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

The Rehab Blueprint Podcast — Ep 10
Fit for Practice? The Healthcare Practitioner Paradox

In Episode 10, we tackle a touchy topic: Should healthcare practitioners embody the healthy lifestyle they promote?

We explore the paradox of clinicians who advise on movement, nutrition, and recovery—yet struggle to apply it in their own lives. Does it matter? Does fitness impact credibility, patient trust, or professional burnout?

Join us as we challenge assumptions, share our own training journeys, and unpack what “fit for practice” really means.

Ep 9: Guest - Jaimie Bowie (NHS Osteopath)
The Rehab Blueprint Podcast – Episode 9 Guest: Jaimie Bowie (Osteopath)

In this thought-provoking episode, we sit down with UK-based osteopath Jaimie Bowie to explore the realities of working within the National Health Service (NHS). Jaimie offers a candid look at the challenges and opportunities clinicians face in a public healthcare system—from long waiting lists and clinical restrictions to the contrasting dynamics of private practice. We dig into how treatment approaches shift between NHS and private settings, what limitations exist around technique and time, and whether the “free care” model influences patient engagement. Jaimie also shares valuable advice for new grads entering the profession and reflects on the most important lesson he’s learned working in the hospital system.

Whether you're in public health, private practice, or somewhere in between, this episode offers critical insights into navigating MSK rehab within a complex system.

Ep 8: Traction - All Hype, No Long Term Hold
In this episode, Brogan, Luke, and Giles pull apart a persistent myth in musculoskeletal care: spinal traction (and the claims that it creates long term remodelling of the spine).

Despite being widely used across manual therapy and chiropractic circles, high-level evidence tells a very different story. We dive deep into systematic reviews, including a major Cochrane review of 32 RCTs, revealing that traction offers minimal to no long-term benefit for pain, function, or disability—and may even cause harm in some cases. We also explore how traction & X-rays continues to be promoted despite being absence from major clinical guidelines, and unpack why structural imaging, postural ‘corrections’, and spinal curvature targets are unreliable metrics to guide care. From adverse effects to flawed logic, we break down why the traction narrative needs to be re-evaluated—and what better, evidence-informed approaches clinicians should be turning to instead.

Spoiler alert: It’s time to stop pulling on spines and start pushing forward with science.
