What Is The Best Global ETF? (VWRP, FWRG, ACWI & More) - Tom's Personal Finance

Tom from @tom.tpf joins me on this podcast episode to discuss a very important question what is the best global ETF for UK investors?

As Tom and I discussed on our previous podcast episode, investing really can be made simple - invest into a global fund and do this consistently for decades.

However, which global ETF is best? There are many to choose from and the jargon can be confusing. So, in this episode we compare 5 of the most popular global ETF options.

What makes them different? Primarily the number of underlying holdings (essentially the number of stocks in the ETF) and the fees that they charge.

We go through each of the ETFs and then conclude on which one (or ones) are the best for investors.

This episode will be very helpful if you're a long term global fund investor.

Why I Don't 'Buy The Dip'

What happens if the dip keeps on dipping?

When the market falls, no one knows: 1. How big the fall with be. 2. How long the fall will last. 3. When the market will bounce back.

This is exactly why I don't personally 'buy the dip'. Long story short, because it's impossible to time the best time to invest. Which is why only investing when the market โ€˜dipsโ€™ is a losing strategy over the long term.

The much better strategy - in my opinion - is the following two steps:

1. Stay invested

At all times. After all, I donโ€™t need this money for the long term. And itโ€™s impossible to time the right moments to buy and sell.

2. Keep investing

โ€˜Cost averagingโ€™ by investing every single month. No matter what.

I do this personally by primarily investing into low cost global index funds and ETFs. No need to overcomplicate your investing strategy.

Then let time and compound interest grow your wealth

The 2025 Stock Market Crash - What You Should Do

The stock market has been rough in 2025. Both the US stock market and global stock market are down heavily since the beginning of 2025.

Time to panic? I don't think so.

As we go through in this episode, the big mistake that people often make at these uncertain moments is panic selling. We need to avoid that.

Not just because it is impossible to 'time' when to get back into the markets, but also because the historical data backs up that these types of falls happen regularly in the stock market. And these falls might even be a good thing if you're a long term investor...

What am I doing? Not panic selling, continuing to hold my investments and continuing to invest.

What should you do? During this episode I share the 4 things that you should do - right now - in my opinion.

EVERYTHING You Need To Know About Pensions (State, Workplace, SIPPs & more) - Wealth By Alex

Alex from @wealthbyAlex joins me on this episode of the podcast to discuss all things pension. This episode really is a 'crash course' in absolutely everything that you need to know about pensions.

Alex is extremely knowledgeable on pensions and if you have any type of pension then this episode will be extremely helpful to allow you to cut through the noise and jargon surrounding pensions.

Pensions are often misunderstood, but they are one of the best (if not the best) ways to grow our wealth and then retire one day.

In this episode we discuss the state pension, defined benefit pensions (DB) and defined contribution pensions (DC). On this last one, these DC pensions include both workplace pensions and SIPPs (self invested personal pensions).

We ran through common misconceptions, how to make the most of your pensions, when to consider switching platforms, fees, funds, and a lot, lot more (timestamps below).

When Will The Stock Market Crash?

Will the stock market crash? If so, when will it happen? When it does happen, when will the bottom be? And when will it bounce back to a new high?

These are all great questions that we discuss in this podcast episode.

Spoiler alert though - I have no idea. And no one else does either.

'Timing the market' is impossible.

Whilst the stock market is currently 'high', it could go even higher. Or there could go a massive crash tomorrow. Unfortunately no one knows.

Timing the highs and lows are almost impossible and missing just a few of the best days in the market could reduce your returns greatly.

As we discuss in the episode, a stock market crash is a matter of WHEN, not IF. The stock market will crash - 100%. If we look back at history, there are regular dips, corrections and crashes. However, it is impossible to predict this WHEN.

Hopefully this episode can help to provide some comfort to long term investors.

Which ISA Is Best & Which ISA Should You Prioritise? (Cash, Stocks & Shares, Lifetime or Innovative)

Which ISA is best? That is the topic of today's episode.

First, we cover exactly what an ISA - or Individual Savings Account - is and break down how each of the 4 different types of adult ISAs actually work.

We then move into which ISAs are likely to be best to prioritise in certain situations.

Overall, and everyone's situation will be slightly different, Stocks & Shares ISA will give you the most 'profit' (most likely). This is because over the long term the gains and dividends can exponentially grow your wealth.

However, Lifetime ISAs (specifically Cash LISAs) are a fantastic vehicle to save for your first house deposit. And Cash ISAs can be useful in some specific scenarios, like if you will breach your personal savings allowance and have to be some tax on your savings interest.

How Can You Achieve Financial Freedom? - Up The Gains

Sammie from @upthegainsmoney joins me on this episode to discuss how we can achieve financial freedom.

It comes back to our 'FIRE number', the number we need to grow our investment pot to to then achieve financial freedom.

Which is why 'retirement' is a number and not an age.

Sammie introduces a concept called 'the gap'. We all have a gap and in order to reach financial freedom Sammie helps to explain a process of how we can close that gap and reach financial freedom quicker.

What Will Happen To The Markets In 2025?

In this video I discuss what will happen to the financial markets in 2025.

First though, it's helpful to revisit what was predicted in 2024. And then what actually happened in reality.

There was a big difference. Including the world's biggest bank getting their prediction wrong by an unbelievable 38%.

In fact, since I started investing back in 2017, I think there has been a 'big crash' predicted every year. Yet, the US and global stock markets are much, much higher than 2017.

You probably know where I am going with this, but it is impossible to know what will happen and it is impossible to time the market, as we discuss during this episode.

The best thing is to start investing and keep investing. It's impossible to predict what will happen from year to year, but by the market goes up slowly over the long term. And by investing you're giving your money the chance to beat inflation and compound.

How I Invested ยฃ17,976 In 2024

In this video I discuss exactly how I invested ยฃ17,976 across 2024.

Including the platforms I use to invest and the specific investments I've made down to the penny.

The very large majority of this money went into global index funds and ETFs. That's the investing approach that I personally follow.

I then also invested a little bit of money into crypto.

Listen to the episode for the full details.

Vanguard Have Increased Their Fees - The Details, The Maths, Should You Switch & More

In this video I discuss the recently announced changes to Vanguard UK fees.

This took me by surprise.

In short, if you have <ยฃ32k on Vanguard's platform across your ISA, SIPP and GIA then you will be paying a ยฃ4 p/m fee from 31 January 2025 onwards. If you have >ยฃ32k then you are not impacted by this. This fee change also doesn't impact Junior ISAs.

In this podcast episode we run through the details of the fee change, the maths of it, who will be the worse impacted, whether you should consider switching or staying, and for those who will switch what platform and/or fund you should switch to.

Two specific platforms are appealing if you wanted to switch and I have linked them below.

Listen to the full episode for all the details!

- Trading212 - https://www.trading212.com/join/MMS (or use promo code 'MMS'). Affiliate link. To get free fractional shares worth up to 100 EUR/GBP, you can open an account with Trading 212 through this link. Terms apply.

- Invest Engine - https://investengine.pxf.io/LKKVEL (or use promo code 'MMS'). Affiliate link. Capital at risk. T&Cs apply. Minimum investment of ยฃ100. Must stay invested for at least 12 months.

These are both affiliate links, thanks in advance to anyone who uses them. T&C's apply, with investing your capital is at risk.

Are You Investing? If Not, Stop Waiting, Start Investing (plus my investing mistakes and investing journey to ยฃ100,000+)

In this video I discuss my brand new book Stop Waiting, Start Investing - that came out on 26 November 2024 - in more detail, run through the investing mistakes I made (of which there were quite a few) and take you on the journey of how I built my portfolio from ยฃ0 to ยฃ100,000+ over the last 7 years.

To do this I didn't do anything special or inherit any more, and I'm certainly not a genius, but I share what I did - mainly consistently prioritising investing over the years.

Finally, we touch on compound interest. Including the importance of it in building your wealth and a few specific examples.

Monty from @montylanefinance joins me on this episode of the podcast to talk all things investing.

Monty has grown his investment portfolio from ยฃ0 to ยฃ89,000+ over the last 3 years, spread across a Stocks & Shares ISA and SIPP, and is on his way to a six-figure investment pot.

That's a huge sum of money in a short space of time - so I wanted to find out how he did it.

We discuss Monty's switch from individual stocks to index funds and ETFs, the two investment platforms that he uses, as well as the five specific funds that Monty invests into to build his wealth.

How To Invest For Your Children (Junior Stocks & Shares ISA, Junior SIPP and more) - Iain Geddes

Iain from @IainJGeddes joins me on this episode of the podcast to talk about investing for your children.ย

If you donโ€™t currently have children, this is useful future information. Even if you donโ€™t want children, you can hopefully pass on this knowledge to friend's children, nephews and nieces.ย

We have three main options: Junior Stocks & Shares ISA, Junior SIPP, or using part of your own adult Stocks & Shares ISA allowance.ย

Each option has different pros and cons.ย

The key with the two โ€˜Juniorโ€™ options is that the money legally becomes your childโ€™s at 18 (Junior Stocks & Shares ISA) or at 55 (Junior SIPP).ย

If youโ€™re skeptical they may misuse the money, or you just want more control, you can use part of your own adult ISA allowance - assuming you have some left - to invest for your children.

The greatest asset that children have is time. Due to compound interest, even small amounts contributed today have the chance to grow for decades to come.

The Making Money Simple Podcast
Investing & Taxes Explained (everything you need to know about taxes when investing)

In this video I go through everything that you need to know about investing and taxes in the UK.

This includes the 3 main vehicles we can use to invest in the UK - ISAs, pensions and general investment accounts.

And the 3 main 'phases' of investing - before investing, during investing (i.e when we are invested in something) and when withdrawing.

Ultimately, ISAs and pensions have great tax advantages. So if possible, make the most of these.

But, GIAs do have their place in specific situations. Not to mention that for some types of investments (e.g crypto) we can only use GIAs to invest.

Just be aware that with GIAs we may be liable to pay capital gains tax and/or dividends tax.

Capital gains tax arises when we sell, and the allowance is currently ยฃ3,000 per tax year.

Dividend tax arises when we earn dividends and this happens when we're investing as most funds pay dividends, and the allowance is currently ยฃ500 per tax year.
