Disability as a Unifying Force in Europe (Interview with Ronan Kerleo)

Ronan Kerleo is a member of Pan-European Party Volt Europa and Leader of the Volt Disability Network and is also one of the Board Members for Volt France, the French branch of Volt Europa.

Ronan helped draft the Moonshot Programme for the last European elections, a unique programme supported by all our lists across Europe, which includes a number of important specific points on disability rights including  Making the CRPD a binding standard in European legal framework, recognising the General Comments of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as authoritative for their interpretation,

- Push for a directive on deinstitutionalisation requiring Member States to establish a roadmap for moving away from the institutional model and immediately end the use of EU funds for the construction of new institutions

- Create a European Disability Agency to ensure harmonised implementation at European level of the rights provided for in the CRPD

- Abolish discriminatory protection régimes such as guardianship, which deny legal capacity for disabled people and support the implementation of new supported decision-making (SDM) models

- Criminalise forced sterilisation.

- Develop an inclusive and high-quality educational system that offers to all children, including those with all kinds of disabilities, the opportunity to achieve their potential.

More recently, Ronan has have started to communicate externally as the Volt Disability Network, with an initial opinion piece that he wrote for European Independent Living Day on 5 May

Finally, on a more internal level, The Volt Disability Network is not only striving to improve internal accessibility at their events and communication, but also to promote greater understanding of the importance of ensuring that more and more disabled people can take on responsibilities within the party, and stand for election to represent Volt.

Matt Coulthard is a dedicated Leading Firefighter with the Gibraltar Fire & Rescue Service, bringing over 12 years of operational experience and a strong background in leadership, training, and community engagement.

His passion for supporting others goes far beyond the fire ground.
