Right now, if you’re living in lockdown like I am, it can be super challenging.
We can not control what is happening externally to us, how long the lockdown will last, what people are or aren’t doing. And don’t get me started on the news!
Yet, I know for myself, if I focus too much on what is happening externally I can end up going in a downward spiral.
So in this week’s podcast, I’m chatting about how I am managing my mindset during this lockdown as we enter into week 8. How I’m focusing on my internal state & what I can do, as this is what’s helping me show up the best I can for myself & my little family daily.

In this week's episode, I take you back to me around 6 years ago, where I was before I really started paying attention to what I was eating.
You see it wasn’t until I gained awareness of just how much sugar I was really having, that I was really alarmed & concerned about the effect it was having on my body but then also the impact it was having on my boys.
If I had stayed on course to what I was eating back in 2015 it would have been a completely different trajectory to what myself & my boys are now eating & our long-term health.

Food is just food.
Yet we can attach so much meaning to it when we eat something we feel we ‘shouldn’t’ be eating. This can then spiral into a loop of guilt & shame.
Where if you are anything like I used to be would end up with me eating ‘badly’ for the rest of the week or weekend & then thinking I’ll start again on Monday!

I’ve been avoiding weight loss.
Avoiding chatting about it in my posts, in my LIVES, my workshops, my podcast.
Because I didn’t want to add to the noise. The nutrition & weight loss industry noise that is out there. That multi-billion-dollar industry that is essentially wanting you to try & fail with diets as that’s what keeps it all turning.
For so many many years, decades really, I listened to that noise. I paid attention. I took notes. Well, let's get really honest, I was an A-Grade student! I subscribed to all of the noise. The latest plan, pill, or celebrity on how to lose 10 kilos would come out & I was first in line to try it.
So knowing my old beliefs & stories, fear kept me quiet in my posts without actually addressing & chatting about weight loss directly.
Yet, by staying quiet, I add to the confusion. By staying quiet I let the noise still exist for you.
And so it’s time I got transparent. It’s time for me to talk about it. So I hit the record button & shared it in this week’s episode.

In my early 30’s I used to think that gratitude was a bit of fluff.
Something that I’d see floating around social media that told me it was a good thing to do, but honestly, not something I ever really considered doing.
Well, it took me some time, but nowadays it’s something that I regularly practice. And the benefits go much deeper than what I used to think at that very surface level.
It’s pretty amazing the effect that habituating the practice of gratitude has & what it can do for a more positive state of mind. And I chat about this on the podcast this week. Plus I share how I practice it & also how I am showing my boys as well.

I took an hour out of my day & I had a float.
It was incredible.
A year or two ago I would never have done this. All the stories would have popped up not to… I don’t have the time, I have other things I should be doing, I shouldn’t spend the money, blah blah.
But you know what, they’re just stories & these days I’m better at recognising the signs of when I’m wearing myself down & need to do something just for me. Not for my husband, my boys or anyone else, just for me.

Years ago if someone said to me I need to celebrate my changes, I would have thought it was a whole lot of mushy nonsense. I don’t have time for that, it’s done, let’s move onto the next thing that would have most likely been my thoughts!

Food for me got so complicated. Somewhere between my teens & early 30’s I lost trust within my own self and I let the food industry, the diet industry have control over what I ate. I thought that others knew what was better for me when they actually knew nothing about me.
Finally, I realised that it really shouldn’t be that way.
We know deep down how to truly nourish & fuel our bodies. How to eat well. It’s just somewhere along the way it has been clouded with beliefs & stories that we need to look externally rather than internally, that we need to make it more complicated than it really is.

I have been on ALL of the diets, restrictions & obsessions over what I could & couldn’t eat.
I’m talking decades of repeatedly trying all of the things to be ‘better’ with my food, only for them not to work long term.

Sometimes I can slip into putting everyone else’s needs, wants, above my own. And as a Mum, I know at some point, stage, or maybe a lot of the time, you may be able to agree.
In the past, this is has been a big dark hole for me. I have found myself sliding into this almost feeling sorry for myself state, where thoughts come up of all things happening to me, not for me. Feeling like I had given my power over to the situation I was in.
If you can relate, then you’re going to get so much out of this week's podcast. I speak openly about how we need to take radical responsibility for ourselves. For our actions, for our health, of our choices, of our life really. And that at any given moment, we really do have a choice.

Back in 2018 when I was studying to become a Health Coach, as part of our study we learned about meditation. And in 2018 it wasn’t something that is as popular as it is now. I was intrigued. I honestly thought it was just about sitting there, maybe chanting, but back then I was in the busy busy busy mode so I’ll be honest I thought it would be a waste of time!
Oh how little I knew.
