Suzanne Lynch: From The Chicks to Cat Stevens - 60 Years of NZ Music History

Suzanne Lynch is a true icon of New Zealand music, with a career spanning more than 60 years- she’s still going strong too and has no plans of slowing up.

She first rose to fame and became a household name in New Zealand with her sister as a duo called The Chicks back in the 1960s.

From there, she went on to work with some of the biggest names in music: including Cat Stevens, Olivia Newton-John, David Bowie and Luther Vandross.

More recently she was the vocal coach on reality TV shows like NZ Idol and NZs Got Talent. And in 2020 she was inducted in the NZ Music Hall of Fame.

In this conversation, Suzanne opens up about:

+ The excitement and challenges of finding fame when she was only 14.

+ Why she wrote her book for her grandchildren — and what she hopes they learn from her story.

+ The lessons Cat Stevens taught her about music and life.

+ The importance of resilience, mentorship, and choosing happiness. And much more!

Suzanne is a national treasure, and this was a real treat.

She has a new book out too, called “Yesterday when I was young” available at all good bookstores- it’s definitely worth checking out if you want to know more about Suzanne's incredible life and career.

How Mark Rocket Co-Founded Rocket Lab & Became NZ’s First Astronaut

You may or may not know the name, but Mark Rocket is one of the most intriguing kiwis you’ll ever meet.

He is the first and only New Zealander to ever go into space- he went on a 10-minute flight on the Jeff Bezos owned “Blue Origin” spacecraft earlier this year.

Mark is an entrepreneur who has had a lifelong obsession with space. He made a lot of money in the early years of the internet.

Then, after legally changed his surname to Rocket, he became an early investor and half owner of RocketLab with Sir Peter Beck.

He is also the founder of Kea Aerospace, a Canterbury company developing solar-powered aircraft that could change how we explore and observe our planet.

This podcast is a small part of the whole incredible Mark Rocket story.

Marathon Star Jake Robertson Speaks on Twin Brother Zane’s Doping Scandal & The Fallout!

Jake Robertson from Hamilton is one of New Zealand’s fastest runners of all time.

Jake and his twin brother Zane moved to Kenya when they were 17 to train with the world’s best runners.

And it paid off, big time. Jakes times are some of the fastest ever recorded by a kiwi over 10km, half marathon and the marathon.

Then in 2023, Jakes twin brother Zane received a lengthy ban for doping. An indiscretion that has also had huge negative repercussions for Jake

This podcast is part of the Jake Robertson story.

+ His early years in Hamilton being bullied for looking different.

+ His reflections on moving to Kenya as a teenager and getting so sick he almost died.

+ Training with Eliud Kipchoge and other world champions.

+ The impact his brother’s doping ban has had on him. And much more.

Jake is for the most part pretty media shy and reserved- this is maybe the most open and reflective he has ever been in an interview before.

He was back home in New Zealand for some cancer treatment which we touch upon in this episode.

I hope you like it.

She Is Not Your Rehab: Matt Brown on Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Violence

Matt Brown is one of the coolest people I’ve ever met. He just has this aura or mana about him.

He doesn’t do too many podcasts, so this was a huge honour to have him as a guest on mine.

The very short back story is this: Matt Brown grew up surrounded with family violence and childhood trauma, but instead of letting that destroy him, he turned it into his mission.

He started cutting hair and his barbershop called “My Fathers Barber” became more than just a place to get a sick fade. It became a safe space for men to have conversations about pain, vulnerability, forgiveness, and healing.

Matt and his incredible wife Sarah then wrote an amazing book called “She is not your rehab.” This is more than a title, it’s a challenge to stop passing your trauma on to the people you love.

Recently, that have released a beautiful kids book called “This is not yours to carry.

This podcast is a very small part of the Matt Brown story.

You might already be aware of the incredible work Matt and Sarah have been doing for years. Or you might be leaning more about this absolute legend for the first time. Either way, I hope you learn something new about this absolute diamond of human.

The Ultra Running Legend You’ve Never Heard Of | Kiwi Ultra Marathon Pioneer Sandy Barwick

Sandy Barwick is an ultra-running pioneer and one of New Zealand’s most incredible but under-recognised athletes.

She is in her 70s now and is the fittest person at her retirement village.

In the early 1990s this Kiwi was one of the world’s greatest female ultra-runners. And this was a time where anyone doing these sorts of events were seen as being a bit odd, and women were discouraged from doing them at all.

Here are some highlights from her CV:

+ First woman in history to complete 1300 miles in a certified race.

+ She held multiple ultra-distance world records.

+ She ran the length of New Zealand to raise money for diabetes

+ She was awarded an MBE in 1994 for services to athletics.

We chat about her remarkable journey from a running novice to a world record holder, the evolution of ultra running, her experiences as a female athlete in a male-dominated sport, and the mental and physical challenges she faced.

Sandy reflects on her training regimens, nutrition strategies, and the importance of mental toughness, including her use of self-hypnosis.

Whether you know the name or not, you are about to learn more about a true kiwi legend.

Out of the Blue: Ryan’s life-changing physio lecture

Today on The Dom Harvey Podcast, we’re bringing you something a little out of the blue in partnership with Southern Cross Health Insurance.

We’ve got a special bonus episode exploring how life – and especially your health – can change in an instant.

When it does, being prepared can make all the difference.

Today, Southern Cross Health Insurance member Ryan shares his story.

Hear what happens when you’re physically fit, love the gym, and suddenly realise the health condition you’re studying is exactly what you’re experiencing.

Ryan is wise beyond his years. For someone in his early 20s, his perspective on family, friends, recovery, and purpose is truly refreshing and inspiring. I really loved this chat with Ryan, and think you’ll learn a lot from it too.

What we share on this podcast reflects our own views and experiences, and not the views of Southern Cross Health Insurance. This is not intended to be a recommendation or financial advice. If you’re interested in getting health insurance, please seek appropriate advice from a qualified professional to suit your circumstances.

George has been visiting us for years, filming across the country’s wild islands, off-grid homes, and jaw-dropping landscapes. • How Kiwi architecture compares to the UK
  • The number one question New Zealanders ask him
  • Why NZ design is world-leading in eco-friendly living

Life After Gold: Nico Porteous on Identity, Anxiety, and What’s Next

Nico Porteous was 16 years old when he won a bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

That was just the beginning of his rising star.

He was named Sportsman of the Year award at the 2022 Halberg awards on the back of his incredible Olympic gold medal in the halfpipe at the Beijing 2022 Winter Games.

Now at the age of 23, he has retired.

In this raw and revealing conversation, Nico opens up about what it really takes to get to the top- not just the training and pressure, but also the personal sacrifices, mental health battles, and the toll on his body and mind.

We discuss the bittersweet decision to step away from competitive skiing, the impact of injury, and what it means to retire on his own terms.

This is a story about growth, gratitude, and self-discovery, from the top of the podium to the start of a whole new chapter.

I first met Nico at the very start of his career, so it was really cool to connect with him at the very end. And it was even cooler to see he hadn’t rally changed- he is still impeccably polite and well-mannered and totally ego-free. Nico is a proud New Zealander who has made me proud to be a New Zealander, so this was a huge honor.

The Race That Landed Kipchoge: Sydney’s Road to World Marathon Major Status

Wayne Larden is the Race Director of the TCS Sydney Marathon.

If you’re running Sydney this year or have it on your bucket list to run one day, this episode is a must listen.

He’s been in the role for over 20 years, and in that time, he’s turned the event from a small fun run with about 1,200 people into a world-class marathon with 35,000 runners – including the GOAT himself, Eliud Kipchoge.

Honestly, it’s hard to think of anyone who’s done more for running in Australia than “Lardy.”

In this chat, we talk about what it takes to put on a massive event like this – the behind-the-scenes chaos, the planning, the pressure, and the payoff. We also get into how he landed Kipchoge, what becoming a World Marathon Major actually means and where he hopes to take the event in the future, including advice for Kiwis hoping to get a spot in Sydney next year.

Whether you're a runner, race nerd, or event junkie, this chat is full of grit, laughs, and real insight into the global running boom from an Aussie legend who has seen and done it all.

42 Wins, 4 World Titles: NZ Motocross Legend Courtney Duncan’s Incredible Story

Courtney Duncan is a four-time world motocross champion.

In this revealing conversation, Courtney opens about the toughest chapter of her life: being diagnosed with a heart condition: pericarditis, and how that forced her to completely reevaluate her approach to racing, health, and life.

We also talk about the emotional rollercoaster of winning her first world title, what it meant after years of setbacks, near misses, and heartbreak.

And the pressure that followed. Because sometimes, reaching the top is only the beginning.

This is a conversation about more than just sport—it’s about resilience, identity, and what it really takes to chase your dreams.

Whether you’re a fan or just learning about Courtney for the first time, I think you’ll love this episode.

From Manslaughter to Māori Farmer of the Year: The Incredible Story Of Ben Purua

Ben Parua grew up surrounded by violence, addiction, gangs and trauma.

Then when he was fifteen, he was sentenced to five and a half years in jail for being an accomplice to a manslaughter of an elderly man.

It was while incarcerated at Waikeria prison in the central north Island that he got introduced to farming. A career that has changed his life and put him on a road to redemption.

Last year he was named Maori farmer of the year and was also a finalist for the Kiwi Bank New Zealander of the year.

He is a powerful force for good- helping others walk away from the life he once lived.

And he is also a Tik-Toker with 82,000 followers- give him a follow at @FarmUpNZ

This is a brutally honest conversation that some might find alarming. Some of the ground we cover includes:

+ His early years growing up around gangs.

+ His introduction to drugs while still at primary school

+ The night in 2011 which cost an elderly man his life

+ Reflections on his time in jail.

+ Rebuilding himself

+ His relationship with the brother of his victim.

+ The people who gave him a second chance.

+ What it's like to be judged forever by the public and so much more.

Ben speaks with unfiltered honesty about his past, not to glorify it, but to offer hope: proof that no matter how broken you are, it’s never too late to change.

This conversation is emotional. It’s uncomfortable at times. But it’s also uplifting, redemptive, and deeply human.
