The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Gladiator 2

Welcome to the Temple of Geek podcast, where we geek out over all things pop culture. In this episode, we’re diving into the highly anticipated sequel, “Gladiator 2”. Join us as we dissect the film’s plot, characters, and historical context.

Ridley Scott directs and produces Gladiator II, a 2024 historical epic and sequel to his 2000 film Gladiator. David Scarpa wrote the screenplay from a story he co-authored with Peter Craig. The ensemble cast includes Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. Jacobi and Nielsen reprise their roles from the original film, while Mescal takes on the role of Lucius, originally played by Spencer Treat Clark.

In this installment, Lucius, now a prisoner of war, becomes a gladiator under the tutelage of Macrinus, a former slave. Macrinus seeks to overthrow the twin emperors Geta and Caracalla.

Was Gladiator 2 a Sequel Worth the Wait?

“Gladiator 2” has been making waves since its release, and we’re here to share our honest opinions. While the film boasts stunning visuals and a star-studded cast, it has its fair share of quirks and questionable plot points. Is it a worthy successor to the iconic original, or does it fall short of expectations?

JJ kicks off the discussion by expressing their disappointment, feeling that the movie doesn’t live up to the original “Gladiator.” They believe the two movies are so interconnected that it’s impossible to separate them. Maria agrees with JJ, stating that they had a feeling the movie wouldn’t be good. Despite having a good time watching it, they don’t consider it a good movie.

Denzel Washington plays Macrinus in Gladiator II from Paramount Pictures.

Natacia, while admitting to being slightly softer on the movie than JJ and Maria, agrees that it’s not good. They found Denzel Washington’s performance fantastic but felt the movie failed to deliver.

Dissecting the Plot

The film’s plot takes some unexpected turns, with some viewers feeling the connection to the original was forced. Was there a point where the story should have gone differently? How do the characters’ motivations hold up under scrutiny?

The discussion turns to the plot and politics of Gladiator 2, with Maria expressing their anger about the movie’s politics. They felt the movie manipulated the audience’s emotions and failed to deliver a strong emotional core.

Fred Hechinger plays Emperor Caracalla, Pedro Pascal plays General Acacius and Joseph Quinn plays Emperor Geta in Gladiator II from Paramount Pictures.

JJ adds that the movie’s plot relies heavily on the audience’s emotional connection to the first Gladiator, making it intellectually insulting. They found the movie’s attempt to manipulate the audience’s emotions by mirroring scenes from the first movie to be lazy and cheap.

Characters We Loved and Loathed

The cast delivers some standout performances, but are the characters themselves well-written? We discuss Denzel Washington’s nuanced portrayal, the comedic emperors, and the lack of depth in certain roles. Are the characters believable, or do they feel like mere plot devices?

The group then focuses on the characters and performances, with JJ criticizing the character development of Lucius, the protagonist in Gladiator 2. They felt his character was poorly written and his motivations were unclear.

'Dune: Prophecy' Episode 3 ''Sisterhood Above All'' Review & Discussion

In the latest episode of HBO’s “Dune: Prophecy,” titled “Sisterhood Above All,” viewers are taken on a deep dive into the lives of the Harkonnen sisters, specifically focusing on Valya and Tula. The episode shifts away from the heavy world-building and exposition of the previous two episodes to deliver a character-driven narrative that explores the sisters’ motivations for joining the sisterhood and their journeys. The series is based on the books by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson and is set 10,000 years before the events of Dune.

Temple of Geek Podcast Hosts Kari, Maria, and JJ delve into the latest episode of the HBO series, exploring its themes, characters, and connections to the broader Dune universe.

A Deep Dive into Dune: Prophecy Ep. 3 “Sisterhood Above All”

“Sisterhood Above All” utilizes flashbacks to provide context for the Harkonnen sisters’ present-day actions. The episode explores their childhood on the Harkonnen homeworld, Lankiveil, and the events that led them to join the Bene Gesserit. The episode also showcases the complex relationship between the sisters and their family, including their parents and their brother, Griffin.

Themes and Symbolism

The episode delves into themes of revenge, loyalty, and the consequences of one’s actions. The Harkonnen sisters’ desire for revenge against the Atreides family is explored, as well as their unwavering loyalty to each other. The episode also explores the theme of manipulation, as seen in the interactions between the Harkonnen sisters and the Reverend Mother.

Jessica Barden, Emma Canning in Dune: Prophecy, Season 1 – Episode 3 “Sisterhood Above All”

“Sisterhood Above All” introduces the concept of “the Voice,” a power possessed by some Bene Gesserit sisters that allows them to influence others through vocal commands. The episode reveals that Valya possesses this power, and it explores the potential implications of this ability.

The Mystery of Desmond

The episode also continues to build upon the mystery surrounding the Emperor’s Truthsayer, Desmond. His motives and the extent of his powers remain unknown, adding an element of suspense and intrigue to the series.

“Sisterhood Above All” is a well-crafted episode that provides depth and complexity to the Harkonnen sisters. The episode’s focus on character development and its exploration of complex themes make it a standout installment in the “Dune: Prophecy” series. The episode leaves viewers with several unanswered questions, setting the stage for an exciting second half of the season

"American Homeboy," Director explores the origins and impact of Pachuco and Cholo Culture

Brandon Loran Maxwell, the writer-director behind the indie documentary sensation “American Homeboy: Portrait Of A Street Revolution”, is redefining filmmaking in the digital age. His film, a deep dive into the history of Mexican American pachuco and cholo culture, has taken an unconventional path to success, leveraging AI technology and a grassroots distribution strategy to reach a wide audience.

Interview with Brandon Loran Maxwell, Director of American Homeboy

Brandon Loran Maxwell is a writer, director, and founder of Chela Media, a digital multimedia company focused on creating content for Mexican American audiences. His debut film, American Homeboy, is a testament to his innovative approach to filmmaking and his commitment to telling authentic stories.

‘American Homeboy” challenges stereotypes and highlights the resilience of Mexican Americans in the face of historical adversity

“American Homeboy” made waves earlier this year by selling out independent theaters across the country, all without the backing of a studio. Maxwell, a first-time director, personally negotiated with theaters and built a dedicated fanbase before securing a distribution deal with Apple TV and Amazon Prime.

Brandon Loran Maxwell

“I wanted to make history accessible to everyone,” says Maxwell, who also founded the multimedia company Chela Media in 2022. “By using AI to restore rare archival footage, we were able to bring the past to life in a way that resonates with modern audiences.”

Everybody thinks that I’m like some technological guru, but I’m not. I don’t even like technology that much. But it has some amazing potential and it empowers people in a way that it didn’t used to. And so somebody like me can raise a little bit of money and be able to make this entire film utilizing that technology. You know, with this footage. A lot of it was so old; it was shot on a different frame rate. It was shot with fewer pixels. So it just doesn’t translate to modern screens, which are mostly 1080 and 4K. And so we used AI to upscale the footage. E essentially, when you’re bringing the footage larger, you lose pixels, so it becomes blurry and doesn’t look good. So AI can fill in all of those missing pixels in a way that helps look even better on modern televisions. And so we did that and we used it to smooth out some footage.

The film, shot over three years and edited in just 90 days, explores the origins and evolution of pachuco and cholo culture, challenging stereotypes and highlighting the resilience of the Mexican American community. Maxwell’s innovative use of AI allowed him to restore and enhance 20 terabytes of footage, creating a visually stunning and historically rich experience.

Ranflas Lowrider Club By The Ortega Brothers

American Homeboy features interviews with prominent figures such as Estevan Oriol, Charley Trujillo, and Luis Rodriguez. Which offered diverse perspectives on the cultural phenomenon. The film has garnered significant attention for its authentic portrayal of a community often misrepresented in mainstream media.

Sandy Avila From Lady Lowrider Club

I grew up around this subculture, I’m still a part of it. But growing up, I was into low riding. My first car was a 67 Impala. I was involved with gangs growing up for a long time. I went through the system like a lot of people. I’ve got a bunch of Chicano tattoos all over me. It was just something that we did.

Jihae Discusses Her Role as Reverend Mother Kasha in Dune: Prophecy

Jihae, an accomplished actress and singer, embodies the formidable Reverend Mother Kasha in HBO’s “Dune: Prophecy.” As the Emperor’s Truthsayer, Kasha wields significant influence within the Imperium, her pronouncements carrying the weight of undeniable truth. Yet, her loyalties are torn between her obligations to the royal family and her dedication to the Sisterhood. A conflict that fuels her character’s intricate journey.

In our interview with Jihae, who plays Reverend Mother Kasha in the TV show “Dune: Prophecy,” she discusses her attraction to the role, her preparation, and the challenges of filming during a strike. She also delves into the dynamics of the sisterhood, particularly the relationship between Kasha and Valya, and hints at some unexpected twists and turns in the show’s plot.

Shocking twist for Reverend Mother Kasha in HBO’s “Dune: Prophecy”

In the series premiere, Kasha’s unwavering commitment to the Sisterhood is evident. She actively participates in the Sisterhood’s covert schemes, using her position as Truthsayer to manipulate events and protect their interests. Her cunning and strategic mind is on full display as she navigates the treacherous political landscape of the Imperium.

Kasha’s loyalty to the Sisterhood clashes with her deep ties to the royal family, creating a fascinating internal conflict. Her bond with Emperor Corrino goes beyond mere confidante and advisor. This entanglement forces Kasha to make difficult choices with far-reaching consequences.

Photograph Courtesy of HBO

From the outset, Kasha forges a close bond with two Harkonnen sisters, key figures in humanity’s future. Kasha’s journey takes an unexpected turn towards the end of the first episode with her unforeseen death. This shocking event leaves a void in both the Sisterhood and the Imperium, highlighting the dangers of the world and underscoring Kasha’s significant impact.

Jihae, on the Appeal of Playing Reverend Mother Kasha

Jihae’s portrayal of Reverend Mother Kasha brings depth and complexity to this intriguing character. As the series progresses, Kasha’s legacy will undoubtedly shape future events, and viewers can anticipate further surprises in “Dune: Prophecy”.

“I found Kasha to be the most gifted truth-sayer within the sisterhood, which is why she’s the right hand of the emperor of the known universe. And while her alliance and allegiance to the sisterhood and the cause for the sisterhood is number one, she does have this maternal feeling towards the Princess and cares for her.”

Jihae’s draws parallels with her 2011 rock opera, a collaboration with John Patrick Shanley based on the Persephone myth and the Triple Goddess archetype. She’s captivated by the story’s focus on a sisterhood of powerful women, led by Persephone, Demeter, and Hecate, who nurture and train young acolytes, much like the Sisterhood.

This resonates deeply with her experience filming “Dune: Prophecy,” where she sees a powerful parallel in the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. The Bene Gesserit, with their intricate rituals and unwavering commitment to their mission, echo the strength and mentorship depicted in Jihae’s rock opera. It’s as if she’s found a real-world embodiment of the themes she explored on stage, further amplifying her appreciation for the story’s beauty and inspiration....

Eric Petersen Discusses Playing Kevin McRoberts on "Kevin Can F**K Himself

Eric Petersen, who played the affable but oblivious Kevin McRoberts on AMC’s “Kevin Can F**K Himself,” recently discussed his experience on the show in an interview with the Temple of Geek Podcast.

“Kevin Can F**K Himself” – A television series that deserves far more recognition

It’s baffling that “Kevin Can F**K Himself” remains under the radar and rarely receives the media attention it deserves. The show stars Emmy winner Annie Murphy, known for her role as Alexis Rose in “Schitt’s Creek,” as Kevin’s wife, Allison. Murphy is just as incredible in this dramatic role as she was as Alexis. But it’s not just her performance that makes the show fascinating; it’s the premise itself.

“Kevin Can F**K Himself” juxtaposes sitcom and dramatic television. This isn’t just about comedic and dramatic tones; the show literally shifts between multi-cam and single-cam formats, changes color grading, adds and removes laugh tracks, and alternates filming styles to tell its story.

That story explores the reality of being the wife of a goofy, often incompetent, sitcom protagonist. These shows often feature attractive wives who are mistreated by their husbands. “Kevin Can F**K Himself” adds another layer by portraying this relationship as an allegory for abuse.

Eric Petersen on playing Kevin McRoberts on AMC’s “Kevin Can F**K Himself,”

In the interview, Petersen shared insights into how he approached playing the sitcom version of Kevin, a character designed to be a stereotypical sitcom husband. He revealed that his main task was to portray Kevin as static and unchanging, even as the other characters around him underwent significant development.

I’ve played bad guys before, not in all of my career, but I have played bad guys in other stuff. One of the main things when you’re an actor playing a bad guy is you can’t judge the fact that he’s a bad guy. Every character views themselves as the hero of their own story, even the worst of the worst. Even if you’re a maniacal, psychopathic, “I want to murder the world” kind of person, you would have a reason for doing it. “The world is terrible and it needs to go down.” In your mind as the bad guy, that is a positive goal that you are moving towards, right? As an actor, you can’t ever judge the actions or the intentions or the wants or the objectives of your character as being bad. They view them as being good. The way that I viewed Kevin, even though he was a selfish prick who was unaware of the people around him and how his actions were affecting them, he viewed it as, “Man, I’m having a great life, and aren’t I proud of myself for making this great life for myself? Things seem to work out for me. I have great people around me, and they seem to be having a good time too. So I bring the life of the party.” These are all positive things. While truly delusional, through Kevin’s mind, he’s not doing anything wrong. “I’m a great guy to be around.” So you have to view it through that lens. You can’t judge, “Oh man, he’s so rude to his wife. He’s so rude to his friends and to his dad.” That’s not how he views it. As an actor, you can’t put yourself in there. Once the show is done, and I rewatch it, I can be like, “Oh man, he really is such a dick.

Lady Comic Book History: Alicent Vs Rhaenyra

This episode of Lady Comic Book History features Alexandrea Callaghan and Maria (@mariawatcheseverything) discussing the portrayal of women in House of the Dragon, specifically Rhaenyra and Alicent.

The women of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon provide fertile ground for analysis. The portrayal of women in media is always complex, and often when writers aim to portray something feminist or empowering, the opposite effect occurs. Today, they discuss the women of House of the Dragon, specifically Rhaenyra and Alicent, whose portrayals have sparked considerable debate online regarding the show’s feminist credentials.

They analyze the show’s handling of these characters, comparing it to the book source material, and express their disappointment with the reductive nature of the storyline. They also touch on broader topics like the representation of women in media and the impact of the writers’ strike on the show’s quality.

Face off of Alicent Vs Rhaenyra in House of The Dragon

We kicked off the discussion by analyzing the season’s marketing. Every poster and press tour interview pushed by HBO centered on Alicent versus Rhaenyra, encouraging the audience to pick sides. This deliberate decision by the marketing team to pit the women against each other ignored the fact that this war is about succession, primarily between Rhaenyra and Aegon.

We then addressed the simplification of both women’s characters. The show seemed to adopt a very specific, and ultimately limiting, angle in its second season: women equate to peace, and men equate to war. This portrayal lacked nuance and failed to grant the female characters any real agency or driving motivations. Ironically, a majority of the season centered around Rhaenyra and Alicent attempting to achieve peace while the men around them waged and encouraged war.

Rhaenyra and Alicent’s relationship

Furthermore, we discussed the creative team’s handling of Rhaenyra and Alicent’s relationship. It serves as a prime example of how female relationships are often poorly portrayed in media. The decision to age Alicent down, seemingly without a clear plan, further contributed to the issue. Their relationship’s lack of depth resulted in hollow and shallow scenes in season two, which, by this point in the story, felt illogical.

Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy in House of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 3

Ultimately, House of the Dragon feels like a fanfiction version of Fire and Blood. The characters are nearly unrecognizable from their source material, making it difficult to maintain audience connection. This is reflected in the viewership numbers: Season 1 averaged 29 million viewers, whereas Season 2 averaged 25 million. This decline in quality is evident to both book fans and newcomers alike.

Show Notes:

* The hosts discuss the missed opportunity to explore the complexities of female relationships and the dangers of misogyny in power dynamics.

* They analyze the watering down of Rhaenyra’s character and the mishandling of Alicent’s character arc, expressing their disappointment with the show’s deviation from the books.

* Alexandrea Callaghan and Maria (@mariawatcheseverything) touch on the impact of the writers’ strike on the show’s quality, arguing that it doesn’t fully excuse the show’s shortcomings.

Recap and Review: House of the Dragon, Season 2, Episode 5
In the Temple of Geek podcast, hosts Kari, Suhaila, and JJ gathered to discuss the fifth episode of season 2 of House of the Dragon.
Recap and Review: House of the Dragon, Season 2, Episode 5, “Regent”

The hosts criticized the episode for glossing over the mourning of Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon, Meleys. In particular, they felt the show failed to capture the emotional weight of their deaths and neglected the essential funeral rites of Targaryen culture. This missed opportunity to explore the characters’ grief was a significant disappointment.
Meanwhile, another key point of discussion was the contrasting attitudes towards dragons between Team Black and Team Green. Rhaenyra’s Team Black reveres dragons as family and legacy, while Team Green sees them merely as weapons of war. The scene of Meleys’ head paraded through King’s Landing starkly highlighted this difference. It showed a blatant disrespect for Targaryen tradition. Overall, the episode received a mostly positive response, but it left some viewers wanting more.
Character Analysis
In terms of character analysis, the podcast explored the complexities of Daemon Targaryen, analyzing his relationship with Mysaria and the visions of his mother that haunted him. Daemon’s ambition and relentless pursuit of power were also examined, raising questions about his motivations and the lengths he will go to achieve his goals.
Furthermore, Jace Velaryon demonstrated his political skills by successfully negotiating with the Freys to secure their support for Rhaenyra’s claim. The hosts were impressed by Jace’s abilities and recognized the significance of this scene for the war effort.
Patriarchy and Misogyny in Westeros
Thematically, the podcast discussed the recurring themes of patriarchy and misogyny in Westeros. Emphasizing how women are often marginalized and denied their rightful place in power. Additionally, the role of dragons in war and politics was a central theme. With the hosts discussing the implications of using these majestic creatures as weapons of mass destruction.
In addition, the hosts touched upon the Dragonseeds, the new generation of dragonriders who could play a pivotal role in the war. The show’s deviation from the books, particularly with the character of Alys Rivers, was also a concern.
Despite their criticisms, the hosts expressed excitement for the remaining episodes of the season and their anticipation of the upcoming events in the Dance of the Dragons. Ultimately, the podcast concluded with a shared hope that the show would delve deeper into the emotional complexities of its characters and the consequences of their actions.

House of the Dragon, Season 2, Episode 3 Review, “The Burning Mill”
House of the Dragon‘s third episode of the second season, “The Burning Mill,” packs a punch with its dense lore and character introductions. Firstly, the episode deftly sets the stage for a web of political intrigue and impending war.
Opening with a graphic depiction of the Brackens and Blackwoods’ bloody feud, “The Burning Mill” signals the brutality of the brewing war. In the aftermath of the twins’ deaths, the episode reveals a stark contrast between the Greens and the Blacks: Rhaenyra champions peace, while Aegon fuels vengeance.
Furthermore, several new characters enter the fray: Mysaria, a cunning woman seeking influence within Rhaenyra’s court, and Ser Gwayne Hightower, Alicent’s brother, who joins the brewing conflict. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra and Rhaenys engage in a tense exchange, with Rhaenys cautioning against the destructive path of a family-fueled war.
The episode culminates in a dramatic showdown between Rhaenyra, disguised in a nun’s habit, and Alicent within the walls of King’s Landing. Overall, “The Burning Mill” was a well-crafted and informative episode that actively set the stage for an exciting and dramatic season. Specifically, the sharpened focus on character development and political intrigue delves deeper into the motivations and conflicts driving the narrative. With war lines drawn and alliances shifting, the episode masterfully sets the stage for a bloody and devastating conflict that will determine the fate of Westeros.
