A Psychological Discourse on Mental Health with Philip Arandia Ph.D. (cand.)
Is mental illness a sin? Or is it demonic possession? How do we reconcile the tension between psychology and spirituality when it comes to mental illness? What is the church’s role in caring for people with mental health struggles? How can we educate the church, Christians in caring for and journeying with people with mental health struggles? Philip Arandia, a spoken word artist, an assessment specialist, supervised psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and a pastor, joins me in this week’s episode and answers the toughest questions concerning mental health, Psychology and our Christian faith. Story of a PTSD and Bipolar Warrior
For the second season’s pilot episode, I interviewed our administration’s head at MindLove Movement, Ella Pineda. In this episode, she shared with us her journey to healing as someone who was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Bipolar 2 Disorder. Let’s learn from her and pick up some gleanings that we can also apply in our lives and in the lives of those people that we care about.

A Biblical and Psychological Perspective of Mental Health: Holistic Approach to Care (Part 2)
Christians often struggle with the understanding whether mental illness is spiritual or its biological. Does it have some basis with the background that we have? The answer is yes. Because God has made us multi-part beings. He’s made us physical and immaterial or non-physical. So we really do need to understand that God’s provision for us is things like medication and psychotherapy and individuals who understand that. But He has also provided the church that can provide supportive care for, that can walk along with us, that can care for us, that can be those burden-bearers to help us with our physical need, with our spiritual needs and our psychological needs. So when we interact with an individual we have to think of them holistically. We have to look at mental illness from both a biblical and a psychological perspective if an individual’s going to be able to have complete and full recovery.

A Biblical and Psychological Perspective of Mental Health: God of the Broken (Part 1)
You’d think that after all God had done, Jezebel’s threat would have meant absolutely nothing to Elijah…but it did. He was wasted. The entire run had left Elijah emotionally spent, spiritually exhausted. He’d run as hard as he could, and he couldn’t run anymore. His life, work, ministry, effort, responsibilities, duties, deadlines and demands, had left him completely busted. So this is how he responded: “Elijah was afraid and ran for his life… He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life’…Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep” (1 Kings 19:3-5). So what did God do? How did God react to that moment?

S1E3: How Bad Theology Hurts the Anxious, Depressed and Suicidal (Part 2)
Lingering or unrelenting mental health concerns should not be a matter of shame or cause a Christian to doubt their salvation. Our bodies and minds, like the rest of creation, are groaning to be made whole (Romans 8:22).

S1E2: How Bad Theology Hurts the Anxious, Depressed and Suicidal (Part 1)
In this episode, we’ll talk about how bad theology hurts the anxious, depressed and suicidal. Ergo, the “have more faith” theology dangerously compounds biopsychosocial anxiety with spiritual anxiety, without sufficiently addressing either.
