Rediscovering Latinidad is made with love and dedication to the art of family history. Too often the search for family history can seem Eurocentric and inefficient for those identifying as Latiné, LatinX, and anywhere in between. Let’s share our stories, our resources, and discuss why this all matters. In the search for who we are, we can understand more from our ancestors and their stories.

Rediscovering Latinidad
Rediscovering Latinidad Season 7 Episode 7 La Reginalidad y los antepasados de la Edad Media
This week, we're looking at the fascinating lives of medieval queens and princesses, royal genealogy, and Queenship Studies! We talk with two historians: Dr. Ellie Woodacre, Researcher from Winchester University and host of the "Royal Studies Podcast," and Susan Abernethy, creator of "The Freelance History Writer" blog. We also hear how co-hosts Briar and Edward found distant links to Iberian royals, disprove the notion of "blue blood," and learn why, if you have medieval European ancestors, it's likely some of them were royal.

Rediscovering Latinidad
Rediscovering Latinidad Season 7 Episode 5: Prexit and Puerto Rico’s Future: A Vision for Sovereignty with Javier A. Hernández
On today’s episode—just two days before the anniversary of the United States’ acquisition of Puerto Rico from Spain—we’re joined by author Javier A. Hernández, whose book Prexit: Forging Puerto Rico’s Path to Sovereignty reimagines what a fully independent Puerto Rico could look like.

We explore how sovereignty could unlock new opportunities for Puerto Rico—politically, economically, and culturally—and how self-determination might strengthen not just the island’s future, but the entire Caribbean region. Javier shares how history informs this vision, and why understanding Puerto Rico’s past is essential to shaping a thriving, self-sustaining future.

For anyone passionate about Puerto Rican heritage, identity, and the possibilities that lie ahead, this conversation offers an inspiring look at what Puerto Rico could become when it defines its own path forward.

Rediscovering Latinidad
Rediscovering Latinidad Season 7 Episode 4 Heridas Hereditarias: Latinidad, Israel, y Palestina dos años después del 7 de Octubre
Two years after the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, grief, outrage, and displacement continue to ripple across the world and across identities. In this episode, we look at how Latino histories of colonization, diaspora, and resistance shape our understanding of this conflict and how Jewish Latinos, in particular, often find themselves torn between cultural memory and political conviction.
This conversation brings together two voices with deeply personal ties to these layered histories:
  • Joaquín, the late cousin of our co-host Briar Rose, grew up between El Salvador and the United States, shaped by the shadow of civil war, U.S. intervention, and migration. His reflections, recorded before his passing, speak to the inherited trauma and empathy of those who’ve lived through displacement and violence, and how that informs solidarity with Palestinians.
  • David, cousin of cohost Edward, is Colombian Jewish and lived in Israel, where he witnessed the fear, mourning, and polarization that followed October 7. His perspective wrestles with faith, identity, and the pain of watching a homeland, both ancient and modern, consumed by cycles of vengeance and survival.

Together, their dialogue explores what it means to hold multiple truths:
  • How Latinos see echoes of their own histories in Israel and Palestine
  • The tension between justice and safety, faith and politics, colonization and survival
  • How Jewish and non-Jewish Latinos navigate belonging in global conversations about oppression

The episode is both a tribute and a reckoning, a space to honor Joaquín’s memory, to listen to David’s lived experience, and to ask how the past two years have reshaped what it means to stand for humanity, even when history keeps dividing us.

Rediscovering Latinidad
Rediscovering Latinidad Season 7 Episode 3 No Sabo Kids: Español sin Barreras
In this heartfelt episode, we dive into the world of no sabo kids—a term often used to describe Latinos who didn’t grow up fluent in Spanish. Together, we explore what it really means beyond the stereotype.
Two of our co-hosts share their own journeys as no sabo kids, reflecting on how their experiences with language and identity shape the way they move through their identity. We’re also joined by two friends who claim the no sabo identity, offering their perspective on culture, connection, and pride in heritage.
To round out the conversation, we talk with social media personality Maya Murillo, who has sparked national conversations with her humor and honesty about growing up no sabo.
This episode isn’t just about language—it’s about belonging, healing generational gaps, and celebrating the many ways Latinidad shows up across families. Whether you grew up speaking Spanish, English, Spanglish, or somewhere in between, this conversation will leave you feeling seen and connected.
Highlights include:
  • The history and meaning of the term no sabo kid
  • Personal stories from a co-host raising the next generation
  • How shame and pride show up in conversations about language
  • The role of social media in reframing no sabo identity
  • A powerful reminder that Latinidad is not defined by fluency alone

Rediscovering Latinidad Season 7 Episode 2 Verbosos para Babosos
In this episode, we dive into the fascinating world of language, accents, and history with our co-host Jellissa, who has studied the rich linguistic influences that shape Latinidad. From the echoes of Arabic and Latin that live on in our words, to the ways different countries pronounce the same letter, to how migration and heritage influence accents—we explore how our voices carry centuries of history.

What you’ll hear in this episode:
  • How Arabic and Latin shaped modern Spanish and Portuguese
  • The story behind different accents across Latin America
  • Why letters are pronounced differently in different regions
  • How language connects us to identity, ancestry, and migration
  • Personal reflections on what language means to Latinidad today

Join us for a journey through language, history, and heritage—and discover how our words connect us to our ancestors and to each other.

Rediscovering Latinidad
Rediscovering Latinidad Season 6 Episode 10 Tertulia de Cine: Yuli
On today's episode we discuss the film Yuli! It is a great movie leading into next week's discussion of Cuba. This episode airing is symbolic to Cuban history; on this day in 1898 Spanish Governor General Blanco in Cuba suspended hostilities in the war in Cuba, and on April 15, 1980 was the start of Mariel Boatlift

Rediscovering Latinidad
Rediscovering Latinidad is made with love and dedication to the art of family history. Too often the search for family history can seem Eurocentric and inefficient for those identifying as Latiné, LatinX, and anywhere in between. Let’s share our stories, our resources, and discuss why this all matters. In the search for who we are, we can understand more from our ancestors and their stories.
