Especially in the area of Majha where I lived, even speaking a word against the terrorists was like inviting death. In that area which I called the ‘Fourth Koot’ and which had become a forbidden area for other countrymen. Sitting in that village, where the maximum number of people had fallen victim to bullets during this period and where a person could be taken to the next world on the basis of a small lie or truth, such stories could not be written just to be in the discussion! These were just a humble attempt to remove the weight of the Himalayas weighing on one’s mind by scraping it with the tip of a pen.

Kirpal Kazak (born 15 January 1943) is a Punjabi writer. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2019 for his short-story collection Antheen. Kazak was born in village Baloke, Sheikhupura district, British Punjab (now Pakistan). His father, Sadhu Singh Ramgarhia, was well versed in Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, and Punjabi.
The family migrated to Fatehpur Majra village, Patiala district, Punjab, India after the partition of India. He worked as a carpenter and a mason as a youngster.
He started his writing career by contributing to Punjabi magazine Nagmani. In 1972, he published his first book Kala Ilm. He was appointed as a folklore assistant at Punjabi University, Patiala where he researched the culture of nomadic tribes from Punjab such as Sikligars and Gadia Lohars.

The families of his sons start considering him a burden and are not ready to respect his wishes. He has to spend three months in different houses unwillingly. From above, the nagging of his daughters-in-law also torments him. He compares himself with his brother who has only one son and there is no question of getting a share of his father's property. The mental anguish of Baba Baru at the age of 80 is depicted in this story.

Born in 1937 in Pitho village in district Bhatinda, Punjab, India. His father, Hazura Singh, was an ex-serviceman, who had a keen interest in literature and had a personal library containing works of Punjabi literature. Bhullar consequently developed a taste for literature during his early childhood.
In the story ‘Toa’, issues like caste, class, and class have been portrayed. Even in the present time, the fanaticism of Manu Smriti persists.
In Dalit families, the daughters and sons are encouraged to follow moral values and they respect others, but they take this honor and respect given to the upper caste people as a result of ‘higher class’.
In many, the pride of caste persists from generation to generation, due to which equality is being eroded. Even educated people become victims of stress due to their inability to fill the deep pit of the caste system. This is the reason why the main character of the story appears as a witness to the tragic fate of the people of the Dalit society.
The story is told through the voice of an old fish speaking to her 12,000 children and grandchildren. She describes the journey of a small black fish who leaves the safety of the local stream to venture into the world.
The path of the little fish leads down a waterfall and along the length of the river to the sea. Along the way, the fish meets several interesting characters, including a helpful lizard and the dreaded pelican.
With both wisdom and courage, the fish travels far and the tale eventually ends with the Little Black Fish setting a lasting example for others.
