Breaking Sound Barriers: Emmy Winner Amanda Jones on Crafting the Future of Film & TV Music

Amanda Jones has had quite a career, as evident in this really insightful conversation about her journey as a film and television composer. One of her latest projects, Number One on the Call Sheet, is a prolific, eye-opening two-part Apple TV+ documentary featuring candid conversations with some of the entertainment industry's biggest stars, like Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Idris Elba, Whoopi Goldberg, Viola Davis, Denzel Washington and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, to name just a few.

Amanda's career includes BET's Twenties from Lena Waithe, OWN's Cherish the Day, produced by Ava DuVernay and A Black Lady Sketch Show, produced by Robin Thede and Issa Rae. We learn about the empowerment she received from this powerful group of Black women so early in her journey.

Amanda earned her first Emmy nomination for Home, an Apple TV+ series and became the first Black woman nominated for an Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score) Emmy. Later, Amanda was awarded a Daytime Emmy Award for Home.

The idea of following one's passion resonates heavily throughout this conversation. Amanda shares that her love of sounds, more specifically music, started around the age of 3. After graduating from Vassar College and later, studying film scoring and orchestration at Berklee College of Music, she landed an internship with Hans Zimmer and it was an opportunity at Lionsgate that helped give her a more 360-degree sense of the business side of things.

Other takeaways from this multifaceted chat hone in on creating a sonic language for films and TV, the importance of asking questions, communication and collaboration during the creative process, having a strong creative voice, knowing when to delegate as well as fighting off stigmas reserved for women of color and mothers.

A co-founder of Composers Diversity Collective, Amanda's other credits include Somebody Somewhere, Good Trouble, Naomi, Young Love, 7 Days, Dreamland: The Rise and Fall of Black Wall Street, Definition Please, Moving On, The Perfect Find, Mea Culpa, Jodie and the new Apple TV+ series, Murderbot.

2x Oscar Winner, Oppenheimer Sound Mixer Willie D. Burton's History-Making Legacy

You'll quickly learn why bringing this conversation with the legendary Willie D. Burton to you is such an incredible honor.

History-making, Willie's the first Black person to ever win an Academy Award for Best Sound. It was for 1988's Bird, a biopic about the life of jazz musician Charlie Parker. In 2006, he won a second Academy Award for Dreamgirls, joining an elite club of African Americans in Hollywood who are multiple Oscar Award winners.

We talk about how, at an early age, walking past a radio station ignited an interest in audio after he took a peek inside. Truly immersing himself in electronics through a school program, he graduated high school.

Leaving his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama with $50 in his pocket, he relocated to Long Beach, California, later becoming a sonar technician in the Navy. About three years later, he began to pursue a career in audio.

After amassing some work experience in sound, Willie shares a truly remarkable story about the time Sydney Poitier took a big chance on him for what would become Willie's first time working on a feature without having any prior feature credits to his name.

Now, having worked on over 140 film and television projects, Willie's earned a total of 8 Academy Award nominations. They include The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and most recently, Oppenheimer.

Willie's stories about working on the epic Oppenheimer movie with director Christopher Nolan provide a unique insight into their collaboration and technological approach to sound.

Willie shares some great advice as well as his thoughts on the ever-evolving film industry and the power of following one's intuition in choosing projects.

His latest, Captain America: Brave New World, premieres in 2025.

Known for her work on the acclaimed miniseries "Lawmen: Bass Reeves," Dancy's impressive portfolio includes "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody," "Devotion," and the documentary "Aftershock."

In this captivating interview, Dancy delves into her creative process, discussing the meticulous research and preparation behind crafting the perfect orchestral language for "Lawmen: Bass Reeves." She also shares her profound sense of responsibility when composing for the Whitney Houston biopic.

Emmy-winning Editor Lyric Ramsey on Editing & Expertise

Our conversation with Emmy Award-winning editor Lyric Ramsey was a whole vibe. Lyric's eclectic credits include Below Deck, MasterChef Junior, Sweet Life: Los Angeles, Project Runway Junior as well as A Black Lady Sketch Show, On My Block, Clarice, The Goldbergs, Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story, You People, Real Housewives of Atlanta, the BET Hip Hop Awards and I Love New York.

Also, no shade to any of our previous guests but if we had a Post In Black best-dressed award, Lyric Ramsey would be the recipient. Business equestrian is how she referred to it and honestly, it's perfect.

It's no surprise that we begin with fashion as we talk about how Lyric earned the Emmy for Drive with Swizz Beatz, a Hulu docuseries that explores the art cars, oversized ATVs and car clubs that decorate Houston, Texas.

Having loved film and television from a young age, this Howard University grad talks about being back home in California after graduation and while leaving an appointment at a salon, seeing a film crew in action on Crenshaw Boulevard in Inglewood. She ended up getting hired on the spot as a set production assistant.

We talk about her love of the post-production space and why perseverance and optimism are very crucial attributes to hold tight to despite shifts in the industry. We get into what it means to have job insecurity and the side effects of gate-keeping. We talk about nerding out on editing and why it's important to know multiple platforms and constantly expand upon your skills.

Steadily clear throughout the entirety of our conversation is that Lyric is a true blue creative. It shines. It also perfectly illustrates how following one's passion can lead to a longevity of not only satisfaction but success and elevation.

Avril Z. Speaks & the Power of Storytelling Told Through Editing

Director, producer, showrunner, writer and former educator, Avril Speaks, joins us to discuss her journey into filmmaking. Like most of us, Avril developed a love for film and television at an early age. Her fascination later grew into being drawn to rich, character-driven and complex stories about women and spirituality, decorated in questions as opposed to easy resolutions. Interesting because as a producer on Netflix's Files of the Unexplained, Avril talks about not leaning into the obvious regarding the process of shaping this series about strange real-life occurrences and phenomena. Hailing from Queens, New York, it was only after enrolling in a class at Howard University that really ignited her interest in film as a viable career choice. In this conversation, she shares why attending the famed and acclaimed historically Black university has helped her maneuver through Hollywood's lack of diversity. We also talk about why being proficient in certain soft skills is as necessary as networking and how to navigate in a seemingly extroverted industry as an introvert. A phenomenal storyteller with over 20 years of experience, Avril was a producer on the SXSW Grand Jury award-winning film Jinn, written and directed by Nijla Mu'min. Her other projects include directing and producing the Discovery+ & NowThis docu-series, Uprooted as well as the African America, which received an NAACP Image Award nomination. Avril's produced the feature films, Hosea, Dotty & Soul and Black America Is... and was an associate producer on TNT's series, American Race. Queen Sugar and The Chi Editor Sean Linal Exemplifies How to Leverage Your Purpose

So excited to share this episode with you! It's with editor Sean Linal! What makes this conversation so interesting is the way it exemplifies the power of intention and leveraging one's purpose.

Sean's been a part of shows that have impacted the culture in many ways. He was an editor on Ava DuVernay's Queen Sugar and Lena Waithe's The Chi and we get to talk about the experiences and avenues that led to those roles as well as his overall journey into post-production.
Like most professionals in creative industries, Sean's love for film manifested itself at an early age. It was the NAACP ACT-SO program that gave Sean early agency to really explore his interest. At the age of 16, a film he made on homelessness on the subway earned him substantial accolades and money towards film school.
We discuss how crucial it is to be proactive, the best attributes for an assistant editor to acquire and uncover how Sean's early experiences really illustrate how local organizations can provide a wealth of resources and access for creatives.

Emmy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated Andrew Roberts talks VFX & Filmmaking

We speak with two-time Emmy Award-winning and Oscar nominated VFX supervisor Andrew Roberts on this episode of Post In Black. Andrew's credits include Haunted Mansion, Killers of the Flower Moon, Babylon, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Umma, Godzilla vs. Kong, Aquaman, Black Panther, Gemini Man and Snow White and the Huntsman, just to name a few from Andrew's long list of projects that span over 25 years in the industry. Because Post In Black is an interview series that features professionals working in post-production while highlighting their experiences and insight as Black people working in the entertainment industry, this discussion is a perfect season 5 premiere episode because we get to talk about Andrew's experience emigrating to the United States from London and navigating the industry without a network or community and how it has informed his involvement with the Academy GOLD Program, a career development initiative for professionals from underrepresented communities. In that the pathways into entertainment are varied and rarely linear, we talk about how Andrew's academic background in computer programming landed him a job at an architect firm which in turn ignited a special appreciation for the inner workings of software design and 3D technology. Through hard work, risk, hope and relocating to LA, he landed at Industrial Light & Magic where he began as a brain bar supervisor/virtual production supervisor on Obi-Wan Kenobi and later, became a visual effects supervisor for ILM. We were able to really geek out on this episode at length with a lot of great insight from Andrew on what it was like working on the sci-fi thriller, The Creator. We get some really cool filmmaking app recommendations and so much more from this conversation. Dig in! Stay tuned for more episodes of Post In Black's fourth season as we continue to amplify the stories and experiences of Black professionals working in post-production. Look out for new episodes every second and fourth Wednesday. Spenser Reich, ACE, Shares How A Love for Storytelling Led Her to Film & TV Editing

In this phenomenal conversation with editor Spenser Reich, ACE, we learn how this early science enthusiast came to be a film and TV editor on series like STARZ's Power Book IV: Force and Power Book II: Ghost. Spenser proudly reps the South Bay, San Jose, and it was actually the conversations Spenser's parents made a point to have after going to the cinema when Spenser was young that may have offered an early inkling at what would become a professional interest. About the age of 17 or 18, she decided that she wanted to become a filmmaker because of a strong love for storytelling. After moving to LA for film school and through a process of deduction, she arrived at an interest solidly focused on editing, coming to recognize the adoration as a 'love thing.' When it comes to Black women editors, at that time, she was only familiar with one, a previous Post In Black guest, the great Terilyn Shropshire. Spenser notes there's a specialness in what Black editors and filmmakers capture, bringing honest experiences into their work, mentioning Spike Lee, Boots Riley and Ryan Coogler. Having edited features and episodic TV, we talk about her approach to working within both and whether or not it depends on the genre. Spenser talks about why organization is key in the editing space as well as the power of being able to work effectively in a collaborative setting with other people and why dedication to the work is so necessary. We talk the importance of building a community and helping others within the scope of networking and why Spenser says it's her mission statement. Some of her credentials include Diarra from Detroit for Paramount+, whose executive producers are Kenya Barris and Diarra Kilpatrick, which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, the film, SAMSON, which won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature Film at the 2023 Asian American International Film Festival and the series, Physics Girl for PBS. Stay tuned for more episodes of Post In Black's fourth season as we continue to amplify the stories and experiences of Black professionals working in post-production. Award-winning Film & TV composer, Dara Taylor Talks Music, Movies and Her Latest Film, Strays

On this episode of Post In Black, we talk movies and music with film and TV composer, Dara Taylor. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Dara grew up a little outside of Buffalo. We talk about how, between both of her parents, there was a mutual love of music that found its way to her. Hence, she thought every home had a 'record room.' Her mother, a church choir director, was the first person to teach her about music arrangement and instrumentation. So, how did Dara go from being a computer science major to composing for her latest project, the feature film, Strays? We get into it as well as the 'aha moment' when she decided that music in film and television was the adventure she was destined to take. In this really great and expanding conversation, Dara shares advice for those interested in film and TV composing. We get her perspective on starting out in the industry, navigating it through relationships and rejections, and the comedy, Strays, starring Jamie Foxx and Will Ferrell. Dara was nominated for a Society of Composers and Lyricists Award in 2023 for The Invitation. Her credentials include Tender Bar, directed by George Clooney, The Noel Diary, HBO Max's Little Ellen, Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, Curious George: Cape Ahoy, Amazon's The Boys Presents: Diabolical, American Refugee, Echo Boomers and both Netflix series, Bookmarks and Trial By Media. From Silicon Valley to Hollywood, Composer Jongnic Bontemps talks new Transformers Movie and More

Just like a timeless melody, our conversation with composer Jongnic Bontemps, whose latest project is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, was an unforgettable one. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Jongnic's musical journey began at an early age with a simple request. His mother really wanted to hear an organ in the house. The piano soon became Jongnic's best friend while his exploration grew to include performing in bands. Because the journey of a creative is often sinuous, we talk about how he ended up heading to Yale University to become a lawyer and after another pivot, landed what ended up to be a 15 year career in tech. He became one of a few Black chief technology officers in Silicon Valley until he heard a calling from a much higher source. We talk in-depth about the journey from law to music to software development and ultimately the world of post-production as he's composed for over 50 projects. We discuss the beauty of making and maintaining connections with other creators and the purposeful sustainability it can bring, which led Jongnic to composing for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. His impressive credentials include projects like, The Land, United Skates, Boomerang (TV series), The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel, Sharia, My Name Is Pauli Murray, Godfather of Harlem, Creed II, The Secret Life of Pets, Unbroken, The Imitation Game, Godzilla, Carrie and the video games, Call of Duty: WWII and Redfall.
