The Photo Xperiment podcast is an interview based photography podcast where Andrew Hellmich focusses on getting inside the heads of working professional photographers. This is the photography podcast where you will hear answers to the questions you want answered about why your favourite photographers do what they do and how they do it. More than that, Andrew will dive deeper and find answers to what makes these photographers tick, how they achieved their style, what equipment and techniques they use and just how they got to where they are today. The perfect compliment to the business side of photography and the Photo Biz Xposed podcast, also by Andrew Hellmich - The Photo Xperiment Podcast looks more at the creative side of the professional photographer behind the images. These interviews concentrate on what the photographers do, their philosophy, the thought process behind their photography, why they do what they do. The idea is to get inside their head and learn what makes them tick. The show is not a how to take photos or what camera and lens should I buy but more about living life as a photographer and pursuing the image before the cash.

TPX30: Michelle Szpak – The business of motorcycle and automotive photography
Michelle Szpak of www.szpak.co.uk has been shooting for over 15 years and specialises in motorcycle and automotive photography. Not the classifieds type of car and bike phots, what Michelle creates are special, incredibly lit art pieces for her clients.
Her byline reads…
Unique, passion-fuelled professional Automotive photography of your pride and joy. Creating Artwork for your Walls that last a lifetime.
But it hasn't always been all about incredible images of beautiful motorcycles and fancy cars!
Michelle started with the idea of being a landscape and animal photographer before moving on to portraits – that was 12 years ago.
Then in 2013, she photographed her first motorcycle, and automotive photography has been the focus since.
The images our guest creates are works of art that require a fantastic imagination, expert lighting skills and an understanding of composition any photographer would die for.
You might be surprised at the lighting she uses to showcase the cars and bikes (examples below). Michelle shares techniques and more, including the business and sales side of her photography, in this interview.
Big thanks to ImagenAI for sponsoring and making this episode possible. If you'd love to have your post-processing after every shoot done for you – in minutes and at super affordable costs (around 5c/image) you need to take a look at ImagenAI.

TPX26: Scott & Erick – no more third party platforms to sell your photography
Erick Danzer and Scott Wyden Kivowitz of www.imagely.com are two of the guys behind a new automated lab fulfilment for photographers with WordPress websites.
I asked both guys onto the podcast after reading about what could be a game-changing service for photographers who want to sell directly from their WordPress websites.
My first thought was – is this the end of services like Pixieset, Pic-time and Shoot-proof?
Erick Danzer is the man behind-the-scenes at Imagely. His focus is on ensuring Imagely gives back to the photography community through the Imagely Fund and other initiatives.
Scott Wyden Kivowitz who was interviewed for episode 274 of the PhotoBizX Podcast and is the Chief Community Officer at Imagely, a father, blogger, photographer and educator. He's the author of multiple photography books, and often educates photographers about WordPress via blogging and YouTube.
If the idea of doing away with a third-party print and file selling solution like Pic-Time, Smugmug, Photoshelter, Zenfolio, Shootproof, Cloudspot or Pixiset sounds attractive… it'll be worth listening to what Erick and Scott have to share.

Here’s some of what we cover:

What is your big takeaway?
Following this interview, I’d love to read your feedback and comments. Was there something from this interview that struck a chord, inspired or motivated you?
Will you take any kind of action after hearing what Scott & Erick had to share?
I often think of businesses being very simple but not always easy. – Erick Danzer

TPX25: Angie Connell – Creative photography is alive and well
Angie Connell of www.angieconnellphotography.com.au is arguably the most creative photographer I've interviewed for the podcast.
It's rare in the world of photography today to see something unique or to see a photographer creating something different from the norm.
In a social media run world where we are over saturated by imagery, it feels like an impossible task to be different, to find your specialty and stand out from the crowd.
At the same time, we're told to find what moves us as a person, as a photographer, an artist and focus on that. And if we do, if we let our unique voice come to the surface and shine through in our work, we will find we have no competition.
We're told, do this and we'll connect with our perfect clients who will be drawn to our vision and life as a successful creator will be assured.
The problem is… finding and recognising that unique voice and translating it to our work is tough.
Today's guest has done exactly this.
I've always tried to produce work that speaks to me and speaks to the subject and sort of infuse my humour in it. – Angie Connell
Her photography is unique, it's captivating, thought-provoking, inspiring, funny, quirky and just damn good.
She shoots conceptual pet photography for the quirky pet lovers in this world.
She's becoming more and more recognised within the industry by her peers and I have a feeling, she will become known around the world if she continues to produce the work she has been.
I'm talking about Angie Connell and I'm rapt to have her with us now.
Angie, welcome!
A big thanks to The Image Salon for sponsoring this episode of the podcast and making the show possible. If outsourcing your editing is something you're currently doing or considering, please put the guys at The Image Salon to the test… I think you'll be blown away! They service some of the biggest names in the industry including Fer Juaristi, Two Mann Studios, Gabe McClintock and Edwina Robertson to name a few.

Here’s some of what we cover:

What is your big takeaway?
Following this interview, I’d love to read your feedback and comments. Was there something from this interview that struck a chord, inspired or motivated you?
Will you take any kind of action after hearing what Angie had to share?
I have to always remind myself that sometimes my failures are not what other people would consider failures. – Angie Connell
Let me know by leaving your thoughts in the comments below.
If you have any questions that I missed, a specific question you’d like to ask Angie or if you just want to say thanks for coming on the show, feel free to add them below too.

My personal work is more for me to try new things out and whether it succeeds or fails is always something to be seen. – Angie Connell

I struggle with perfectionism in my images a lot like I spend so much time working on an image that you'd become obsessed with the little details when the bigger picture is very much there. – Angie Connell

If you can't get what you want, then you have to work around that and sort of adjust the concept a little bit. – Angie Connell

Lawrence Scott of www.lspix.co.uk agreed to record this interview while driving from Glasgow to Edinburgh to go see the Castle and catch up with a bunch of Scotish photographers in one of their most beautiful cities. On the drive, it was difficult to talk business with so many stories from Lawrence about his early days as a crime photographer – some of which you'll hear in this episode.
We did get around to some photography business, life as a photographer based in Scotland, family, bookings, sales and more. I hope you enjoy the conversation/interview as much as I did when recording it.

Audio Diary 6 – Peterborough Portrait and Wedding Photographer Dan Waters
Dan Waters of www.danwaterscreative.com and www.getprophotoclub.com agreed to record this interview while driving fr0m Peterborough to Cambridge for me to play tourist for a day and for Dan to reminisce and play tour guide to the university town he grew up in. Once we got past the topic of Bobby, his incredibly loved dog who lives a life better than most children, we moved on to business and life as a photographer in Peterborough.
In the conversation, Dan shares his ideals on time management, living a life worth living and how he's been able to achieve such a wonderful balance by not being a slave to the clock and curating his business to fit around his life.
Interestingly, Dan was super shy as a youngster and has overcome that – not that you'd ever know listening to him today. Hearing this, it became a topic I focused on, along with wedding and portrait photography business, networking, the laughing club, his man-kind project and what it's like to be the world's most helpful photographer.

Audio Diary 5 – London Documentary Wedding Photographer Mark Seymour
Mark Seymour of www.markseymourphotography.co.uk hosted an industry dinner that coincided with my time in London and I was lucky enough to be invited along. There were photographers, high-end function coordinators, a photography business coach, an album company representative, a wedding marketing startup sales person and an incredible meal hosted by Mark and Karen at their lovely home.
The idea of these dinners/get-togethers (this is the second time Mark has hosted a dinner like this) is to network, make friends and meet other professionals from within the industry on a more personal and relaxed level than something like a conference or workshop. And what a success it was!
In this candid interview, recorded the morning after the dinner while walking through Mark's home, admiring his collection of photography, which includes an original Henri Cartier Bresson, and his library of photography books, Mark opens up and shares his thoughts on wedding and street photography, workshops, the dinner, making it as a photographer in today's market, collecting photography, the learning curve and so much more.
I hope you get as much from this interview as I did in recording it. My other hope is you come away from this episode with ideas of your own to meet and mingle with other professionals in your area and see what these relaxed gatherings can do to enhance both your life, knowledge, business and love of photography and what you do.

Audio Diary 4 – London Street and Wedding Photographer Darren Lehane
Darren Lehane of www.lehane.photo has some pretty strong feelings on what is and what isn't street photography. It's the same with gear, especially new photography gear and the clamour for photographers to get hold of it to make them a better photographer or somehow improve their photography business.
After spending a few days with Darren while visiting the UK, it was very cool to hear his thoughts on all things photography – from street, weddings, personal projects, books, the masters and skills of today's photographers. Not only were the conversations engaging and fun, it was very cool to hear how another photographer thinks about the craft.
In this conversation, recorded on a train trip to Brighton to meet up with a few other photographers, I did my best to draw Darren out on some of the topics we'd discussed over cooked breakfasts at Mazzi's cafe, shooting some street photography in central London or over a cup of tea while chatting on the lounge in his London flat.
I hope you get as much from this interview as I did with spending the time I did with Darren in London. You'll find examples of his street photography and links to more of his work below.

Audio Diary 3 – Cardiff portrait photographer and YouTuber Rahim Mastafa
Rahim Mastafa of www.rahimphoto.co.uk has recently made the transition from fitness and gym based photography to costume based shoots in and around Cardiff in the UK.
One thing stood out about Rahim while staying with him for a couple of days on my UK trip – just how easily he made connections with anyone, anywhere. One example was while paying for a jacket purchase in a department store, Rahim started chatting to the sales assistant who turned out to be a part-time program director at the local community television station in Cardiff. A few minutes later and they were exchanging social media details and making the online connections on Twitter and Facebook.
It turns out Rahim had approached the same station with a possible idea which fell on deaf ears. Armed with this new connection, he'll be giving it another try with a much better chance of speaking to the right person.
This is only one example of how easily Rahim makes these acquaintances which go on to lead to bigger and betterer things. It was a simple connection like this that led to him having access to an unlimited supply of costumes from a local supplier who provided costumes for his shoot in the Roman baths of Bath which you can see here: A SPARTAN Cosplay Photo Shoot at The Roman Baths.
After seeing Rahim in action, I asked him about exactly how he does it in this interview which took place in his car on the drive to Bath to visit Jo and Neil Menneer of Divine Divas who you can hear in an upcoming interview on PhotoBizX.

Lionel Taplin of www.stealthedayphotography.co.uk moved from photographing bands to wedding photography with his own spin on alternative. Although Lionel is based in Bristol, he made the trip over to Cardiff to meet up as I was passing through.
Once we started talking about his journey from bands to brides and hearing about Lionel's success with bookings via Instagram, I stopped him right there, grabbed the audio recorder and retraced what he'd covered so far before going deeper on how he's made his transition and exactly how he's making the connections he is with his couples via social media.
Once again, this interview is unedited, raw and exactly as recorded over a cup of coffee in the home of Rahim Mastafa – the fitness and costume photography based in Cardiff to be featured in the following episode.

I feel very lucky to have been offered a room at their home when Dermot heard I'd be visiting the area. I had no idea how much better it would be to discover a city in tow with a local photographer. Not only did I get a chance to see the way Catherine and Dermot run their business, they allowed me into their lives for the few days I was there with a tour of the city, eating and drinking at the best pubs and restaurants, a cycling trip with the nicest older men you'll ever meet and so much more.

TPX24: Jenny Stein – It’s all about the photography not the money
Jenny Stein of The Family Photographer Podcast is todays guest, is based in Pittsburgh USA, is the mother of five and has a family and children's photography business.
Jenny says, “Photography is what I use to look more deeply at my days and to help us remember the every day moments that make up our lives as a family.”
Her podcast explores her beliefs with other photographers from around the world and is aimed at the person who carries the camera in the family.
Your photography can take you to places you would never go otherwise. – Jenny Stein
In this interview, we explore photography, business, podcasting, photography as a hobby and why exactly Jenny does what she does and how she manages it all.
I came away from the interview feeling challenged about my ideals, why I do what I do, what's important in my life and business. I think both Jenny and I pushed each other and I expect, you'll find yourself deep in thought about the topics that come up as you listen in to this episode.

TPX23: Michael Blann – A Book of Epic Photography for An Epic Sporting Event
Michael Blann of www.michaelblann.com was a selfish choice for an interview for me. I first learned about Michael after seeing an ad for Phase One Cameras showing him working in the high mountains of France… photographing the greatest race on earth, the Tour de France. My passion.
The Phase one ad was based around Michael's new book – “Mountains – Epic Cycling Climbs” which was three years in the making. It's a book that brings together a photography project that focuses on bringing the physical landscape to the stories and reputations of cycling's biggest climbs.
After having a closer look at Michaels work, I realised there was so much more to him as a photographer than cycling and landscape photography.
I don't use Photoshop too heavily. I like for people to believe that what they're looking at is what was there on the day. I don't like skies that've been burnt in and looked really dramatic. – Michael Blann
Michael spent six years working for Getty Images as their London Creative Photographer, where he got to roam the world photographing everything for their creative needs.
Now, he's working for some of the best agencies and brands in the world shooting advertising campaigns and helping companies see their ideas come to life… companies like Adidas, Nike, Sky, BBC and Puma.
After all that, I saw a quote from Michael that read “It's my personal photography which is shaping up to be the most exciting.”
To say I'm rapt to have Michael Blann for this episode of the podcast is an understatement. I hope you enjoy the conversation and questions as much as I did in asking them.

Here’s some of what we cover:

What is your big takeaway?
Following this interview, I’d love to read your feedback and comments. Was there something from this interview that struck a chord, inspired or motivated you?
Will you take any kind of action after hearing what Michael had to share?
I've always described myself as the passive observer. By that, I mean there's some photographers that like to be riding amongst the action and be part of the crowd that you're shooting. For me, I've always liked to take a step back and view a scene, which is kind of this classical approach. – Michael Blann
Let me know by leaving your thoughts in the comments below.
If you have any questions that I missed, a specific question you’d like to ask Michael or if you just want to say thanks for coming on the show, feel free to add them below too.

As a photographer, it's really useful to print stuff, to actually look at work. – Michael Blann

Photography is not all about money. It's about exposure, it's about personal gratification that you want to get involved in a project because it sounds interesting; it just varies. – Michael Blann

You've got to remember that you really only have one opportunity when the race comes past to get one shot. – Michael Blann

This style of photography where you're sort of detached from what you're looking at but you're looking in at it is what I'm about. – Michael Blann

I thought the photography would be the hard bit and the time-consuming bit but it was putting the thing together that took an awful lot of effort and time that I never really envisaged at the start. – Michael Blann

Ale Vidal of  www.ale-vidal.com is a filmmaker, director and story teller, or story weaver, as she likes to describe herself. She specializes in capturing the goals, facts, and feelings of a brand that cannot be expressed through traditional marketing.
When you see Ale's work, I think some words that will come to mind are dreamy, beautiful, emotional and transportive. As a creative, you may even feel what she creates is unattainable, it's that good.
I’ve been working to create this video for Sue Bryce Education for a year – yes, the shots in this video have been collected over a year. I have always been drawn to Ale’s work, her eye for beauty is absolutely remarkable. – Sue Bryce

Beauty has so much more depth to it. Beauty is being able to experience something that is aesthetically inspiring and that could be rooted to something that connects us on an emotional level. – Ale Vidal

TPX21: Jacob Fu – From a Successful Wedding Photography Business to One of the Top Travel Blogs in The World
Jacob Fu of Local Adventurer.com and his wife Esther move to a new city each year. From Atlanta to LA to Vegas to San Diego and Portland – where they are now –  while curating one of the top 50 travel blogs in the world! They picked one year because it's long enough to find hidden gems but also temporary enough to motivate them to get out there and explore often.
Before the blog, Esther and Jacob had a wedding photography business for 8 years which they have now left behind. The Local Adventure Blog is filled with beautiful photography, travel tips and advice, places to visit, city guides, things to do, plus how to articles on blogging, photography and travel. It really is a gorgeous, easy to navigate, fun site that can easily find you lost and exploring for wayyyy to long!
I'm rapt to have Jacob on to talk about their journey and how photography has led them to where they are now.
It's easy to find inspiration and it’s easy to find beautiful photos but if they [blogs and posts] don't tell you where or help you get there if you want to experience that same thing, that's one of the most frustrating things. – Jacob Fu

Yes, it’s about the money and running a successful business but more so about being happy with what we’re doing and if we need to take a step back and take some time off and we’re ok with that, then that’s okay as well. And where we’re always constantly look to see how we need to pivot and how we need to shift – Jacob Fu

TPX20: Craig Wetjen – Create and Accomplish with Personal Photography Projects
Craig Wetjen of www.craigwetjen.com has been a professional photographer in Australia and the US for 31 years. He has a string of awards that would make any photographer proud and he's been exhibited on numerous occasions and he's arguably best known for his book… Men and Their Shed where he photographed and captured the stories of 101 men and their backyard sheds.
I found myself at many points in my career so far, which is still going, that I get wallowed up with looking on the other side of the fence rather than looking in my own backyard, and looking at my own ideas, and doing my own thing, and not worrying about what’s going on out behind you but look out what’s going ahead of you in your own two feet, in your own backyard – Craig Wetjen
In addition to his accolades and photography, Craig has taught SEO and web marketing for photographers. This guy is one accomplished photographer and I'm rapt to have him for this interview where we go deep into personal photography projects and everything that goes into creating something you will be truly proud of.
Here’s some of what we cover:

What is your big takeaway?
Following this interview, I’d love to read your feedback and comments. Was there something from this interview that struck a chord, inspired or motivated you?
Will you take any kind of action after hearing what Craig had to share?
Life is not always about money. It's about doing what you love. You know they say if you do whatever you love, you never have to work a day in your life. And I just wanted to do what I love. Selling prints was an absolute bonus – Craig Wetjen
Let me know by leaving your thoughts in the comments below.
If you have any questions that I missed, a specific question you’d like to ask Craig or if you just want to say thanks for coming on the show, feel free to add them below too.

You’ve got to detach from your photography. You’ve got to detach the fact that you’re a creative and you’ve got this sense of ownership of the photograph – Craig Wetjen

To really keep your own mindset is to go with your own journey and follow with your heart – Craig Wetjen

Everybody is worthy of a photograph no matter what age or what gender – Craig Wetjen

TPX19: Kristof Ramon – Breaking Through to Become a Pro Cycling Photographer
Kristof Ramon of kramon.photoshelter.com is a pro-cycling photographer who covers some of the worlds biggest and most prestigious races including the Tour de France, the Giro d Italia, the Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix.
Kristof was born and raised in Belgium and attended film school at the age of 19. It was here that he discovered photography. He eventually followed his passion for cycling and photography and started photographing the sport.
It's difficult to define Kristof as a sports photographer. His photography captures so much more than the action.
He says the riders are always his main focus… and that comes through when you see his portfolio which features close ups portraits of racers caked in sweat, mud, dust, snow and grime.

You’re not going to catch all those little moments and it’s exactly those little moments that set you apart or that makes it unique and what makes it absolutely worth for me are those little moments – Kristof Ramon

Here’s some of what we cover:
What is your big takeaway?
Following this interview, I’d love to read your feedback and comments. Was there something from this interview that struck a chord, inspired or motivated you?
Will you take any kind of action after hearing what Kristof had to share?
The thing is you evolve. When you begin something and you learn a trick or a technique and you try it out, you always tend to overdo it. But in later photography, it’s like those little tricks you try to implement them more subtly and that’s when it becomes interesting because I needed those to go really overboard to be able later on to make that trick more subtle and maybe not noticeable or not as noticeable as the trickery it is, and that’s technique – Kristof Ramon
Let me know by leaving your thoughts in the comments below.
If you have any questions that I missed, a specific question you’d like to ask Kristof or if you just want to say thanks for coming on the show, feel free to add them below too.

Your own voice is much much much more important than being a tool for whatever art director or somebody who is not into photography and telling you how to do it is completely wrong – Kristof Ramon

I’m a sports photographer in that I focus on one sport and it’s simply the one sport I really like and the one sport I’m passionate about, which is cycling – Kristof Ramon

The difficulty is that I don’t want to put a style on anybody. And I think I have a style or a specific point of view and an experience, and I can only bring that experience to that person and hope that he develops a style all by him/herself – Kristof Ramon

I want in the future to have a more classical look that can hold the test of time. So that’s when you get away from effect or heavy effect and be very much more interested and that’s where I am now is storytelling – what makes a picture – Kristof Ramon

As a photographer, you develop a style simply by your cultural reference – Kristof Ramon

I think the biggest, absolute biggest mistake you can make is to let yourself be told how to shoot – Kristof Ramon

TPX17: Craig George – Giving Up on Digital and Moving to Film for Wedding Photography
Craig George of www.craig-george.com was interviewed for episode 140 of PhotoBizX podcast in one of the most downloaded episodes where he shared how he rose from nothing to a fully booked destination wedding photographer in one year!
Last month, I saw a social media post from Craig that he is giving up on digital photography and moving to film. This goes for all future bookings and any existing bookings who want him to shoot film for their wedding. He's now facing a bunch of challenges including pricing, packages, education and having to re-learn how to shoot conservatively.
In this interview, my aim is to uncover why the change and the complete thought process behind the BIG change including how Craig is going to pull this off successfully and stay profitable.

Photography Xperiment Podcast
