This conversation follows the remarkable journey of Therese Macfarlane and her 29 year old son Oliver who has non-verbal Autism. A diagnosis that, back in the 1990s in the small regional town of West Wyalong, was not only rare but largely misunderstood. With limited services, scarce information, and little community awareness, Therese found herself navigating uncharted territory. She shares the early signs that sparked concern, the challenges of seeking support in a town where specialists were few and far between, and the determination it took to advocate for her son when resources were slim. Through all the uncertainty came moments of growth, discovery, and unexpected joy, especially through Ollie’s connection with art, music and his community. This is a story about resilience, the power of a mother’s intuition, and the strength and determination found in the incredible community that stepped up.
