Carpenters’ Hall and The Carpenters Company of the City and County of Philadelphia
Michael Norris, Executive Director of Carpenters’ Hall and The Carpenters Company of the City and County of Philadelphia discussed the well-known, but little understood, “Birthplace of Liberty”, Carpenters' Hall.  Designed by Robert Smith and built by the Carpenter gild as a showcase of their skill and an apprenticeship for young builders, the building hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774 and was home to Franklin's Library Company, The American Philosophical Society, and the First and Second Banks of the United States.  He related the history of Benjamin Franklin’s secret meetings there with French spy, Julien-Alexandre Achard de Bonvouloir, which laid the foundation for French support of the American Revolution. Carpenters’ Hall has declared 2025 the “YEAR OF THE SPY” in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of these clandestine evenings. Activities for the celebration include a spy book club with the Rosenbach, programming with the Museum of the American Revolution’s Revolutionary Philadelphia: 1775 events, a film screening, and a members-only event. Carpenters' Hall is free to the public and welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually. Its library is available to members and architectural scholars, and they continue to support the building and design trades with lectures and professional events. They also offer the Robert Smith Memorial Scholarship to recognize promising student in the historic building trades. https://www.carpentershall.org/robertsmithscholarship  He discussed the Young People’s Continental Congress, a National Partner Program of America250, an educational program that allows students and teachers to work in teams as they collaboratively study America’s founding era and its implications today. Last year 54 students and teachers from 27 states attended, enjoying dinner with elected officials at City Hall and a Fife & Drum-led parade to an opening ceremony, field learning opportunities at historic Philly sites like Carpenters’ Hall, Independence National Historical Park, the National Constitution Center, the Museum of the American Revolution, and an opportunity to co-create and sign a joint Declaration of Aspirations for American democracy. He hopes to expand it in 2026 to include more Philadelphia school participation.  Michael invites us to attend one of their public programs, After-Hours Whisky Tours in the rarely-seen second floor 19th-century library and their Holiday Tea, ‘hosted’ by Dolley Todd Madison, former Philadelphia resident and neighbor of Carpenters’ Hall, wife of President James Madison, and one of the most prominent women in U.S. history. To book your reservation go to carpentershall.org/events. Teas will be held Sundays from November 30 to December 21. Create & Connect with The Barnes Foundation and The Parkinson Council
Bill Perthes, Bernard C. Watson Director of Adult Education at the Barnes Foundation, and Wendy Lewis, CEO, The Parkinson Council discussed their pilot program, Create & Connect. This free workshop is designed to support individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners through meaningful experiences with art and creative expression to make connections—between participants, the works of art, and through shared moments of reflection and making. Phillys Out of the Darkness Walk is October 5
Michael F. Lamma, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention discussed their mission, to help people better understand suicide, give them the tools to help others in crisis and address a leading cause of death through direct education, state and federal advocacy, and loss and healing support for anyone affected by suicide. He notes AFSP is the #1 private funder of suicide prevention research in the world. We talked about having ‘the conversation’ and he encourages us to reach out when we think someone - friend, family or co-worker - is struggling; it won’t put any new ideas in their head, but it can lead to fining help.  Michael gave us warning signs to trigger a conversation, changes in mood and behavior, displaying anger or depression or loss of interest, showing changes in sleeping and eating habits, or self-medicating with drugs and alcohol.   We discussed the effects of COVID, while it did affect the numbers it also bolstered seeking help for mental health and boosted tele-health conferencing.    One of the ways AFSP brings communities together is through the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, a nationwide series of events designed to raise awareness and encourage participation in suicide prevention efforts. These walks give people the opportunity to honor loved ones lost to suicide and show support for programs that save lives. He invites us all to join them at The Mann Center, October 5th for the Philadelphia Out of the Darkness Walk. The bead ceremony will begin the day at 8AM as families, friends, survivors, select different colored beads to represent them and their loved one. The walk will start close to noon after remarks and a special music appearance.  It’s family friendly with parking on site. For more information, to volunteer, sign-up or donate go to AFSP.org/phillywalk  If you’re outside Philadelphia, find a walk near you at AFSP.org/phillywalk where you can enter your zip code.  If you are in a crisis, please call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting 741-741. Help for Domestic Abuse Victims from Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania
Kim Hollenback, Managing Attorney of the Media Office of Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania and VOCA Supervising Attorney spoke about the Victim of Crimes Act and the civil legal services for victims of domestic violence and other crimes her program offers. We discussed the different kinds of abuse, physical, mental and financial, and she reminds us that it is between partners, that it is not limited to married couples. Anyone in a relationship - dating, parental or other, can be the victim of abuse, regardless of age or gender.  Describing domestic violence as a public health issues, she talked about the relief her office can offer, including Protection from Abuse orders (restraining orders), child custody, divorce, landlord-tenant issues and even expungements.   We discussed the restrictions that the state of Pennsylvania places on victims, they narrowly define DV as actual physical abuse, and how they are able to get protections and recourse for their clients.    Legal Aid of Southeastern PA provides free legal services to low-income individuals and seniors throughout Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties.  Because the program is funded through the Victim of Crimes Act  they do not have income requirements, and they are permitted to assist non-citizens as well. She notes, however, that in many cases legal help is either too costly for families above the cut off and many victims of abuse do not have access to their funds.    We discussed other funding for LASP and its programming and Kim reminds us that Legal Aid delivers up to a $12 return on every dollar invested in it; she encourages direct donations to keep them secure.  For more information visit lasp.org/domestic-violence See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

He also discussed the impact of the program, since they started the unit in mid-2020, they have opened over 3,500 cases for veterans and obtained over $4.9 million in retroactive benefits for their clients from VA and SSA, money directly in their pockets to help provide for life’s necessities; their client’s incomes have increased by around $1,400 per month on average.  He described one case of a woman vet who raised six children on her social security while waiting six years for a decision on her military benefits, they were able to resolve her claim with retro benefits, allowing her to buy a home and enable her oldest to get benefits for college.     For more information call the Veterans Advocacy Helpline 610-283-0884 or visit www.lasp.org/veterans See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Our Delaware Valley Podcast
Debby Derricks, Director of Development for the Veterans Multi-Service Center (VMC)
Debby Derricks, Director of Development for the Veterans Multi-Service Center (VMC), discussed the non-profit, founded in 1980 by local Vietnam Veterans, who built a memorial along the Philadelphia waterfront and created a community of vets helping vets.  Today the VMC serves over 6,500 Veterans and families annually with drop in facilities, shelters and centers throughout the tri-state area. The VMC connects Vets with the entitlements and benefits they have earned, cutting through red tape, helping with applications and advocating for them, securing housing, drug and alcohol interventions, employment, job training, healthcare, pensions, disability benefits, even emergency shelter and legal help. We discussed their women’s programming, offering support groups, therapy, housing, even clothing and toiletries for   women in a safe, secure environment that addresses their unique traumas.  The Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox (SSG Fox) Suicide Prevention Program addresses mental health issues Vets and their families face. We discussed their programming, offered free to all Vets, and how the annual Vets radiothon helps support their mission.  The WMGK Vets Radiothon is Friday, June 20 from 6A to 6P.  Call in or make a secure donation by text or online at wmgk.com For more information about the VMC go to VMCenter.org.
