Sepsis is a common, life-threatening disease that requires treatment in the emergency department and inpatient settings. The Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) Guidelines are generally viewed as the gold standard for how to diagnose and manage sepsis. These guidelines were recently updated and contain numerous expected and unexpected recommendations. Gloria Cheng, Phar.D., BCPS, APh graduated with her Pharm.D. from the University of California, San Francisco in 2012. After completing her Pharmacy Practice residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center was hired on to work there as a clinical pharmacy specialist. Not long after graduating, Lieutenant Commander Emily Winans, Pharm.D., a pharmacist and commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) got a job doing just that! Dr. Winans graduated from West Virginia University in 2011 and, after a brief stint working the community setting, commissioned as an officer in the USPHS. The USPHS is one of the eight uniformed services in the United States government, tasked with promoting the health and safety of the country. Steve Dudley, Pharm.D., DABAT earned his doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona in 2015 and completed a fellowship in clinical toxicology at the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center in 2017. He now serves as a Clinical Toxicologist and Director of the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center. Jaci Karpen, Pharm.D., CSPI earned her doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona in 2015. She now serves as a certified specialist in poison information at the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center.

PharmD curricula and residency programs typically focus on basic and clinical sciences during didactic and experiential experiences. Although these subjects are important during clinical practice, they typically do not prepare you for life outside of clinical settings. This episode is designed to inform current pharmacy students and recent graduates of knowledge and skills that are often neglected during school but are extremely important outside of work.

If you survey current student pharmacists, many will express interest in pharmacy residency programs. Residency programs are designed to allow residents to gain a tremendous amount of practice experience in a short time frame. Most programs are a one-year commitment divided into years post-graduation (i.e. PGY1, PGY2). PGY1s are usually open to new pharmacist graduates while PGY2s are only open to those that have completed PGY1s. PGY1s tend to have a general focus (e.g. inpatient vs. outpatient) while PGY2s focus on a specific practice area (e.g. critical care, infectious diseases, oncology, etc.). Residents complete different rotations throughout the year and have longitudinal responsibilities (e.g. original research, staffing, teaching certificate). This episode is designed to explain residency programs in further detail and provide listeners with information that will help them become stronger applicants and residents.
