Making a difference: Aged care nursing in Australia
Like many countries around the world, Australia has an aging population. Currently about 4.2m Aussies are aged over 65, 16% of the population. And more than half a million people, are over 85. In Episode 7 of the podcast, our host Kate Creedon is joined by two Alliance Nurses who are doing just that. Laura Burke is a nurse from Galway, Ireland who moved to Sydney during the pandemic and has worked in a range of settings including mental health wards and aged care across Australia. We also hear from Bernadette Howes, an Aussie nurse who has lived and worked all over the country, in clinical, educational and management nursing roles and has now settled back in her hometown of Adelaide and works in aged care. She tells us all about her nursing career, the benefits of agency work and why Adelaide is the ‘hidden gem’ of Australia.
