Monday Night Live with Derek Arden — Featuring Richard Goodworth ACCA

From Kidnap Zones to Kiosks: Lessons in Leadership, Risk and Resilience

Derek welcomes Richard Goodworth, an experienced Chief Financial Officer (ACCA) whose career has spanned the trading floors of London, the luxury world of Molton Brown, the high-risk security operations of Control Risks, - and now, the cutting-edge world of ImageHolders — creators of innovative self-service kiosks used by the NHS, United Airlines, Nordstrom, Hard Rock Café, and Mercedes-Benz.If you’ve ever tapped your details into a digital kiosk at McDonald’s, checked in at an airport, or dropped a parcel at the Post Office — chances are, you’ve used one of Richard’s creations!

A Career Built on Curiosity and CourageRichard’s journey began as a trainee accountant in the south of England, speeding through his exams and heading straight into the financial fast lane at RaboBank.

The high-energy trading floor taught him lessons in precision, data, and adaptability — and a few Excel tricks that would make your pivot tables blush.

But Richard didn’t stop there. He swapped the banking suits for scented soaps when he joined Molton Brown, then a small luxury retailer. There, he climbed to Vice President of Finance, helping expand the brand across the world — from Singapore and Japan to New York and Paris. Under his financial leadership, the company’s valuation soared from £30 million to over £100 million in just two years. As Richard explained to Derek, Molton Brown’s magic wasn’t just in the fragrance — it was in selling aspiration. “We weren’t selling to the very wealthy,” he said, “we were selling to the people who wanted to feel like them.”

From London Luxury to War ZonesAfter Molton Brown, Richard took a surprising turn — joining Control Risks, a specialist kidnap and crisis-response company. Cue wide-eyed reactions from Derek — and most of the audience!Stationed in Dubai, Richard managed financial operations across the Middle East, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran. He travelled to Baghdad and Basra over 15 times — sometimes escorted by convoys of three armoured Land Cruisers.“The first time we were delayed getting into Baghdad because Route Irish was closed after an incident,” Richard recalled. “That was my introduction to risk management — and patience.”From negotiating with oil companies and government ministers to ensuring staff safety in active war zones, Richard’s lessons in leadership under fire were literally forged in conflict. One unforgettable moment? Learning about the company’s ‘Proof of Life’ protocol — secret personal questions used if staff were kidnapped, to confirm they were still alive. “It’s not exactly something they teach you in accounting school,” he quipped.

Reinventing Self-Service: The ImageHolders StoryFast-forward to today — Richard is the CFO at ImageHolders, a Dorset-based company designing and building sleek digital self-service kiosks. From airport check-ins to fast-food ordering, and NHS reception units to Post Office parcel stations, these kiosks are revolutionising how we interact with the world.

Each design is bespoke — “different by design,” as Richard puts it — engineered to match the exact needs of clients like United Airlines.Derek joked that some of the older generation might grumble at using touchscreens, but Richard smiled: “They’re becoming part of everyday life — and we’re only just scratching the surface.”

Derek’s TakeawayAs Derek summed up:

“What a fascinating career — from luxury soaps to security convoys to cutting-edge kiosks.

Adapt under pressure. Whether in a boardroom or a war zone, composure and clarity make the difference.y

Double-check everything.

Major talking points

Market jitters & pulse-checkJustin kicked off with a candid take on why markets are in a state of flux — from inflation pressures and supply-chain turbulence to interest-rate ascent and currency instability. He and Derek unpacked what these mean for the UK and beyond.

The pound, borrowing and the budget backdropWith the UK’s borrowing ballooning and the pound wobbling against global peers, the duo discussed how macro policy decisions are feeding investor sentiment and what to watch next.

Europe, geopolitics & supply-chain fault linesEurope’s leadership vacuum, Russian gas risks, Greek debt legacy, Brexit dynamics — all got a mention as major undercurrents shaping financial flows and strategic bets.

Digital assets, crypto whispers & blockchain frontiersJustin shared his view on whether emerging crypto/blockchain trends are over-hyped or legitimately changing the game for investors and institutions alike.

MNL with Derek Arden: SUMO Shut Up Move On

Monday Night Live with Derek Arden & Professor Paul McGee

The SUMO Philosophy — Shut Up, Move On & Live Brilliantly!

Hello everybody — Derek Arden here!Welcome to another energising, thought-provoking, and downright entertaining episode of Monday Night Live! This week, I was absolutely delighted to welcome back one of my favourite guests and long-time friend — Professor Paul McGee, the man behind the world-renowned SUMO philosophy — Shut Up, Move On!

Paul is one of the UK’s leading motivational speakers, a performance coach, and the author of 13 bestselling books, including the 20th-anniversary edition of SUMO: A Straight-Talking Guide to Creating an Enjoyable and Brilliant Life.

And yes, he’s still brilliantly straight-talking!

The Birth of SUMO — From Glasgow Banter to Global Movement

Paul shared the wonderfully Scottish origins of SUMO.It all started in 2002 when a Glaswegian on a counselling course blurted out,

“If all else fails, tell them to SUMO — Shut Up, Move On!”

That cheeky comment planted the seed that grew into a global philosophy — a toolkit for handling life’s curveballs with grit, humour, and emotional intelligence.

Paul calls it his “accidental brand,” born not from strategy, but serendipity — a great reminder that sometimes, success sprouts from staying curious and keeping your compass flexible, not rigidly chasing goals.

From the Boardroom to the Premier League

We also dove into Paul’s fascinating work with Premier League football teams — including Manchester United, Manchester City, and Everton.

His story about being invited into City’s inner circle was classic McGee: a mix of luck, networking, and perseverance. One police officer loved SUMO, told her brother — who just happened to be Head of Player Care at Man City — and before long, Paul was coaching players and staff alike.

He’s worked with stars like Shay Given, Micah Richards, and Ben Mee, not to fix problems, but to help high performers get even better. As Paul wisely put it:

“You don’t have to be ill to get better.”

SUMO Meets Psychology — Allies, Not Rivals

Paul’s insights into working alongside sports psychologists were refreshing. While some might see him as competition, the best professionals — like Patrick Vieira, Pep Guardiola, and Mikel Arteta — embraced his presence and kept learning from anyone who could make them better.

“Despite their success, they stayed humble, hungry, and curious — that’s real greatness.”

Life Lessons from the SUMO Guy

Paul unpacked his classic themes — resilience, perspective, and personal responsibility — with plenty of wit and wisdom.

He warned against wearing the “Victim T-shirt”, a metaphor for surrendering control to negativity and blame culture. He urged us to take back control of our mental diet, because too much CNN — Constant Negative News — can quietly drain your happiness and resilience.

His antidote?

“Focus on what you can influence. Improve your sleep, connect with others, and choose optimism.”

He also reminded us that modern life is more complex than ever — from endless washing machine options to parking apps that require a P...

Jasma Patel, a remarkable woman whose journey from corporate marketing to yoga teacher and cancer survivor

Hello everybody! I’m Derek Arden, and welcome to another inspiring episode of Monday Night Live – your weekly masterclass in life, learning, and leadership.

This week’s show is something truly special. My guest is Jasma Patel, a remarkable woman whose journey from corporate marketing to yoga teacher and cancer survivor is nothing short of extraordinary.

From Boardrooms to Breathwork – Jasma’s Story

Jasma began her career in the corporate world, working for major brands like Gallagher and Tesco. But after long hours, relentless pressure, and a life-changing comment from a security guard – “There’s got to be more to life than this” – she knew it was time for a change.

Her next steps were bold: she walked away from the corporate treadmill, followed her passion for interior design, and later applied her marketing skills to support her husband’s property business. Yet life had even more profound lessons ahead.

A Life-Altering Diagnosis – and an Unbreakable Spirit

Ten years ago, Jasma faced a devastating diagnosis: stage 4 womb cancer that had spread to her lungs, brain, and liver. Doctors told her she had just two weeks to live. But Jasma had other plans.

Through unimaginable pain, she focused not on fear, but on what she would do afterwards. She turned instinctively to visualisation, music, and breathwork – powerful yogic tools she didn’t even know she was using.

Despite failed chemotherapy, she took a chance on a trial immunotherapy drug – a 50/50 bet on life. And it worked. Today, she’s not only surviving but thriving – walking, teaching, and inspiring hundreds through yoga and mindfulness.

Your Breath Is Your Superpower

Jasma’s message on Monday Night Live is simple but profound: your breath is your superpower – it’s free, it’s portable, and it’s with you everywhere you go.

She taught us how long, conscious exhales can switch the body from “fight or flight” (the sympathetic nervous system) into “rest and restore” (the parasympathetic state). With just a few mindful breaths, you can dial down stress, change your mindset, and reconnect with calm – even in the middle of chaos.

“If you take nothing else from tonight,” Jasma says, “remember this: your breath can transform your life.”

Ancient Wisdom for Modern Lives

Jasma also shared insights from Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga – a 5,000-year-old guide to living well. Most of us think yoga is just about stretching, but it’s really a way of being:

Yama & Niyama – how we treat ourselves and others.

Asana – movement to prepare the body.

Pranayama – the art of breathing and energy.

Pratyahara – drawing inward.

Dharana – focus.

Dhyana – meditation.

Samadhi – deep stillness and self-realisation.

Mastering the early steps – especially breath – lays the foundation for everything else. And as Jasma shows, it can even save your life.

A Simple Practice You Can Try Now

Jasma guided us through a short breathing exercise you can do anywhere:

Sit tall on your sitting bones.

Gently lower your eyelids and relax your jaw.

Caroline Williams – award-winning science journalist, bestselling author, lifelong learner, and explorer of cutting-edge brain science.

Hello everybody – I’m Derek Arden, and welcome to another fascinating edition of Monday Night Live!

This week, we dived deep into the world of neuroscience, creativity, movement, and the hidden secrets of the human mind with our brilliant guest, Caroline Williams – award-winning science journalist, bestselling author, lifelong learner, and explorer of cutting-edge brain science.

From swallowing vibrating pills in the name of research to rewiring her own brain with electricity, Caroline has travelled the world exploring how science can help us understand why we think, feel, and behave the way we do. Tonight’s conversation was packed with surprising insights, practical takeaways, and a few “wow” moments that will change the way you think about your brain and your body. Let’s dive into the highlights!

What Is Neuroscience – And Why It Matters

Caroline kicked things off by defining neuroscience as the study of how the brain and nervous system create our thoughts, feelings, behaviour, and consciousness. It’s a field full of unanswered questions, and that’s what makes it so exciting. “Anyone who says we fully understand how the brain creates the mind is lying,” Caroline laughed.

Our brains are powerful but imperfect – capable of compassion, creativity, and optimism, but also vulnerable to anxiety, distraction, and depression. Understanding how it all works helps us get the best out of our minds and navigate the glitches that come with being human.

Zapping the Brain for Creativity

One of the most jaw-dropping parts of the evening was Caroline’s story of undergoing brain stimulation in Kansas City. Scientists gently reduced activity in her prefrontal cortex – the brain’s goal-setting “control centre” – to boost her creative thinking.

And it worked! Before-and-after data showed a remarkable difference. By temporarily turning down the “taskmaster” part of the brain, the rest of the mind was free to wander, connect ideas, and innovate. It’s the same principle behind “flow state” – when hours disappear as we’re completely immersed in a task.

Your Gut Talks to Your Brain (Yes, Really!)

Ever had a “gut feeling”? Caroline took part in an experiment to prove that’s more than a metaphor. She swallowed a pill equipped with a tiny motor that buzzed inside her stomach, helping researchers map how gut signals are processed by the brain.

The results? The brain has dedicated networks that respond to internal sensations – and understanding this “gut-brain axis” could transform treatments for eating disorders, IBS, pain, and more. These same devices are already FDA-approved to treat constipation. Talk about science in action!

Move More, Think Better

Caroline’s first book, Move, explores how movement supercharges the brain. Just 120 steps a minute – a brisk walk or dance pace – boosts blood flow to the brain by up to 20%, sharpening focus and fuelling creativity.

It’s no coincidence most pop songs sit around 120 beats per minute – our brains love that rhythm. Even short “movement snacks” throughout the day, like squatting while unloading the dishwasher or dancing in the kitchen, counteract the harmful effects of sitting too long.

Breathe Your Way to a Better Brain

Breathing isn’t just about oxygen – it’s a powerful switch for your brain state. Breathing six times per minute through your nose syncs your brainwaves, increases calm alpha waves,

Tracy Hooper – best-selling author of The Now Hello and founder of The Confidence Project.

1. Welcome to the AI Frontier

Derek kicks off this week’s Monday Night Live with a bold question — are we truly ready for the AI era?Joining him is Graham Jones, the renowned Internet Psychologist and author, who dives deep into how artificial intelligence is reshaping our professional and personal worlds. Together, they unpack what’s real, what’s hype, and what’s coming next — all in classic Monday Night Live style: sharp, insightful, and full of energy.

2. Will White-Collar Jobs Disappear by 2027?

One of the night’s most powerful moments comes early: Graham warns that millions of white-collar jobs could vanish or radically transform by 2027.But it’s not all doom and gloom — it’s a wake-up call to reinvent how we work, learn, and lead. Derek presses Graham for practical advice on how professionals can stay valuable in an AI-dominated economy.

3. When AI Becomes a Team Member

Forget seeing AI as just a tool — Graham explains how some systems are already functioning as team members. These “agentic AIs” can analyse documents, make recommendations, even draft policies. Derek asks the burning question: Are we ready to manage machines as colleagues?

4. Hallucinations, Accuracy & The AI Race

Not all AI tools are created equal.Graham breaks down why some models “hallucinate” — inventing false facts — and why others are becoming far more reliable. The conversation turns to which models currently lead the pack and why accuracy is the new currency in AI. Derek reminds the audience: “If you wouldn’t rely on it in court, don’t rely on it in business.”

5. Teaching AI to Think (or at Least Act Like It)

In a fascinating segment, Graham shares how he built a custom GPT that mimics a real CTO’s thought process to help students learn through simulated dialogue. It’s part education, part innovation, and a glimpse into the next wave of interactive learning. Derek challenges: If we can model human expertise this well — what does it mean for training, mentorship, and coaching?

6. The Rise of Domain-Specific AI

General AI is giving way to specialist systems — finely tuned for law, medicine, or education.Graham predicts this focus will drive the next decade of progress. These niche tools are faster to train, safer to use, and more immediately useful. Derek sums it up perfectly: “In the future, we won’t just talk about AI — we’ll talk about which AI.”

7. The Hardware Revolution: NPUs & Ultra Speed

Behind every AI leap is a hardware revolution.Graham introduces Neural Processing Units (NPUs) — chips designed specifically for AI workloads. These are the future of computing, enabling massive power with less energy. Derek jokes: “By next Christmas, your laptop might be the slow one in the room!”

8. AI + EQ: Can Machines Really Feel?

Can a machine show empathy?Surprisingly, yes. Graham reveals research showing that people often rate AI-driven chatbots as more empathetic than humans. The duo debate whether emotional intelligence can be programmed — and what that means for therapists, teachers, and negotiators.

9. Education vs. Innovation: The Speed Gap

Universities are struggling to keep up with the pace of change.Graham warns that traditional degrees may soon be outdated before students even graduate. Derek adds,

"Nature Leadership & Wellbeing: The Power of the Outdoors"

Tonight’s guest on Monday Night Live (MNL) is our good friend David Skinner .David has just returned from an intense week as a senior volunteer trainer at the Leadership Trust in Ross-on-Wye, where he’s been guiding leaders through their demanding executive development programme. 14 hours a day of coaching, supporting, and stretching people to reach their leadership potential – and then straight back to MNL to share his insights with us!

But that’s not all. David is also a passionate advocate for the healing power of nature . Recently, David has been volunteering with A Dose of Nature, a charity dedicated to helping people improve wellbeing by reconnecting with the natural world.

Nature: More Than Just “Fresh Air”

David reminds us that while nature isn’t a medicine (if you’re unwell, you should always see a doctor), research shows time and time again that spending time outdoors can have measurable benefits for:

Mental focus & memory

Stress reduction

Sleep quality

Immune resilience

And far from being “woo woo,” this is solid, evidence-based science with powerful implications for our daily lives.

Seeing Green – Why Colour Matters

David shared fascinating studies that show the colour green has real physiological effects:

Children surrounded by green spaces at school performed better in memory and attention tests.

Patients recovering from surgery healed faster and needed fewer painkillers if they had a view of trees.

Students working in classrooms with windows facing nature recovered from stress quicker than those staring at walls.

Takeaway: Surround yourself with greenery – it literally boosts brainpower and speeds up recovery.

The Sounds of Nature

From the rustle of leaves to birdsong and running water, the research is clear:

Water sounds increase feelings of wellbeing.

Birdsong reduces pain, stress, and anxiety.

David highlighted that when we’re out walking with headphones on, we often miss these natural benefits. Perhaps it’s time to unplug, tune into the sounds around us, and let nature do its work.

Smell & The Science of Forests

Unlike sight and sound, smell goes deeper – compounds we inhale actually enter our bloodstream.

Pine forests release “pinenes,” linked to lower heart rates and reduced inflammation.

Lavender improves sleep quality.

Rosemary boosts alertness (great for night-shift workers).

Citrus scents show anti-inflammatory effects for respiratory health.

Next time you’re in a pine forest after rain, breathe deeply – it’s good for you!

Walking, Attention & Mental Clarity

A University of Michigan study showed students performed 20% better on tests after walking in a park compared to a city street.

Why? Because nature helps restore attention. Instead of constant stimulation from phones, traffic, or screens, natural settings give our minds space to relax, reset, and recharge.

Monday Night Live with Derek Arden – Special Guest: Tracy Hooper!

Welcome to Monday Night Live! I’m Derek Arden, and tonight we had the absolute pleasure of hosting the wonderful Tracy Hooper – best-selling author of The Now Hello and founder of The Confidence Project. Tracy joined us live from Portland, Oregon, sharing travel tales, life lessons, and confidence-boosting tips – all sprinkled with fun, laughter, and inspiration.

From Portland to the Thames – A Journey Full of Surprises

Tracy began by sharing the excitement of traveling from the U.S. to London with her husband Henry and daughter Margaret. After a delayed flight, she arrived determined to make a great first impression – wrinkle-free outfit, bright lipstick, big smile… because, as Tracy says:

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression!”

Our in-person meet-up? A memorable boat ride on the River Thames, stories over pints in a centuries-old pub, and sightseeing across historic London.

Tower Bridge, History, and Hilarious Mix-Ups

We laughed about the Americans who thought they bought Tower Bridge but ended up with London Bridge – which now sits in Arizona! Being in person meant spontaneous stories, real laughter, and unforgettable moments.

The Confidence Project – Lessons for Life and Work

Tracy explained how confidence is a skill anyone can learn – whether at work, traveling, or simply chatting with strangers. Some of her key lessons:

Low-Level Labs: Practice conversations in safe, everyday settings – like with cabbies or in queues.

Use magic words to keep conversations flowing: What? How? Tell me more…

Drop weak phrases like I just… or Sorry, but… and speak with purpose.

Hats, History, and Hyde Park Adventures

From Hyde Park hat shopping to visiting the Victory Services Club – founded in 1918 for returning soldiers – Tracy shared how travel connects people across generations, especially when sprinkled with courtesy and kindness.

Arsenal Football and Serendipitous Moments

One highlight? Margaret scoring a last-minute ticket to an Arsenal game thanks to a chance conversation on the boat ride. That’s the magic of meeting people in real life – opportunities appear when you least expect them!

Courtesy Is Contagious – Lessons from London Transport

On the Tube, signs read “Someone may need this seat more.” And Londoners lived up to it – offering seats with kindness. Tracy reminded us:

“Confidence is contagious… but so is courtesy.”

Castles, Culture, and the Titanic in Ireland

Tracy’s travels continued to Ireland – weddings in castles , the moving Titanic Museum in Belfast, and even tiny Rathlin Island with just 110 residents! Each stop offered history, heart, and humor.

Kew Gardens and Science for the Future

At Kew Gardens, it wasn’t just about beautiful plants – but also groundbreaking research on climate change and medicine. Travel isn’t only about seeing the past; it’s about...

Jane Gunn with Derek Arden — Navigating Conflict in a Disrupted World

Welcome to Monday Night Live

- Monday Night Live

Jane Gunn — Navigating Conflict in a Disrupted World This week on Monday Night Live, we welcomed back the brilliant Jane Gunn, internationally renowned mediator, lawyer, speaker, and author — known as The Barefoot Mediator. With decades of experience in helping individuals, teams, and organizations resolve high-stakes disputes, Jane brought a wealth of wisdom, calm insight, and practical tools to our Monday night audience.

The Age of Disruption: Why Conflict Is Rising Jane opened with a powerful observation: we’re living in an age of disruption — from political instability and global tensions to financial uncertainty and digital overload. This unrest filters down into the everyday lives of individuals, creating heightened defensiveness, fear, and adversarial behavior in homes, workplaces, and boardrooms.

She described a "cycle of crisis" that’s leaving people disoriented — with many lacking the skills, mindset, or support systems needed to deal with tension constructively.

Where Are the Role Models? Jane and Derek explored the growing absence of grounded, emotionally intelligent leadership. From politics to social media, society is sorely lacking in wise elders and effective role models. Children today often look to peers — or influencers online — rather than older generations for guidance. This, Jane believes, contributes to emotional immaturity and poor conflict management.

Her poignant reminder: "No one's coming to save us. It's up to all of us to speak up."

Speaking Up — Even When It's Hard From whistleblowing in the NHS to calling out toxic behaviors at work, Jane emphasized the need for courage and community support. People are often reluctant to raise issues due to fear of backlash, isolation, or being misunderstood.

She urged us to find safe spaces — with coaches, mentors, or trusted peers — to have “big conversations” and challenge injustice. Social media, she warned, isn't that space.

The Lost Art of Dialogue We’ve forgotten how to have respectful, meaningful dialogue — the kind that used to happen over coffee or at the pub. Today, conversations are transactional, superficial, or overly filtered.

Jane reminded us that resolution happens not just through logic, but through human connection. As a mediator, she likens her work to hosting a dinner party: welcoming people, making them feel safe, and creating an environment where honest discussion can happen.

From Chaos to Clarity — Jane’s Mediation Framework Throughout the episode, Jane unpacked her unique mediation process — built around:

Self-determination: Empowering people to make their own choices

Fully informed consent: Ensuring decisions are based on truth, not assumptions

The Murky Swamp of Reality: Facing difficult truths head-on, rather than avoiding them

Her aim isn't to "patch things up" artificially, but to guide people through the discomfort of truth — so they can make decisions that stick.

Modern Challenges: AI, Comfort Culture, and Over-Reliance on Convenience Jane raised thought-provoking concerns about artificial intelligence. She warned of a growing divide: AI creators vs. AI consumers. The latter risk losing their capacity to think deeply, question critically, or solve problems independently.

She also highlighted our culture's obsession with comfort and convenience — and how it undermines our resilience and willingness to face hard decisions.

Dylan Tweney—acclaimed IT journalist, former editor at Wired and VentureBeat, Derek Arden

Welcome to Monday Night Live

electrifying deep dive into the world of tech, journalism, AI, and digital wellbeing as we welcomed Dylan Tweney—acclaimed IT journalist, former editor at Wired and VentureBeat, and now a strategic communications coach.

From interviewing Jeff Bezos to navigating the social-media slot machine, Dylan brought decades of frontline Silicon Valley experience to the Monday Night Live community. Here's your full rundown of what was covered

The Truth About Tech Journalism

Dylan kicked off by sharing what it’s really like to be an IT journalist—an interpreter of complex innovations into plain English. From the early days of the PC boom to the current AI revolution, he’s been on the frontlines of every major tech wave.

Career Highlights:

Senior Editor at Wired – gadgets, science, business of tech

News Editor at VentureBeat – startups, VC, Silicon Valley economy

Now ghostwriting and speechwriting for top tech leaders and brands

While Dylan no longer writes about gadgets, he specializes in enterprise tech—the powerful but often overlooked systems behind business transformation. “It's not flashy,” he said, “but it’s where the real value is created.”

AI in Writing – Help or Hindrance?

One of the most insightful segments came as Dylan addressed the rapid rise of AI tools like ChatGPT in writing.

According to a survey Dylan conducted:

85% of writers use AI

But only 30% use it to draft copy

Why not more? Because AI can flatten creativity, Dylan warns. “AI-generated content often lacks soul—it’s polished, but not personal.”

Even more concerning: “AI changes how we think about what good writing looks like,” he explained. “If everyone starts copying the bots, human creativity could suffer.”

Social Media: The New Slot Machine?

Dylan offered a hard-hitting perspective on social media’s addictive design—comparing platforms like Facebook and X (Twitter) to slot machines.

The dopamine loop:

* Likes and comments trigger pleasure chemicals

* Outrage fuels engagement

* Result: A culture of anger, anxiety, and comparison

“It made me miserable,” Dylan admitted, reflecting on his personal social media experience. “And I saw how algorithms drive content that keeps us scrolling, not necessarily what’s good for us.”

Yet he remains optimistic. “I see young people who know how to unplug. There’s hope.”

Real Human Connection = Real Happiness

In contrast to tech’s dopamine traps, Dylan championed serotonin and oxytocin—our natural “feel-good” chemicals:

Hug someone Jump in cold water Meditate and be present And yes… deep Zoom conversations count too!

AI in China: Copy or Innovate?

On the rise of generative AI in China, Dylan noted that while some borrowing is inevitable, Chinese AI like DeepSeek and ERNIE builds on the same foundational research pioneered by Western labs.

“It’s more evolution than theft,” he said, emphasizing that global AI progress is built o...

Welcome to Monday Night Live

"Beneath the Surface: Understanding the Imposter Phenomenon with Dr. Kate Atkin | Monday Night Live"

[POWERPRESS]

How Self-Doubt Holds High Achievers Back — And What To Do About It

Monday Night Live with Dr. Kate Atkin: Unmasking the Imposter Phenomenon

In this compelling episode of Monday Night Live, host Derek Arden welcomes Dr. Kate Atkin, a celebrated speaker, trainer, and now PhD graduate whose research dives deep into the Imposter Phenomenon — a silent struggle faced by even the most accomplished individuals.

With a fresh doctorate under her belt and years of experience on the subject, Dr. Atkin reveals the science, stories, and solutions behind a challenge that affects up to 70-80% of people at some point in their careers.

What Is the Imposter Phenomenon?

Forget “Imposter Syndrome” — Dr. Atkin deliberately uses the term phenomenon to reflect the temporary and situational nature of this experience. It’s not a mental health disorder, but rather a common psychological occurrence where successful people struggle to internalize their achievements, fearing they’ll be exposed as a “fraud.”

Whether you're an executive, entrepreneur, or emerging leader, chances are you've felt it: “I don’t deserve this,” or “One day, they’ll find out I’m not really that good.”

Key Highlights from the Discussion:

1. A Personal and Academic Journey Kate shares how she went from not having a first university degree to achieving a PhD — an inspirational arc that reflects the very subject she now researches. Her latest book, The Imposter Phenomenon, is a readable deep dive rooted in her doctoral findings.

2. Who Experiences It — And Why? While popular statistics suggest women are more affected, Kate unpacks the nuance. Her research and meta-analyses suggest that men and women experience imposter feelings differently. Women may hold back; men may push through — both paths can lead to stress and burnout.

3. Social Media and the Comparison Trap Instagram and other platforms have amplified the problem, especially among younger generations. Seeing only the “highlight reels” of others can intensify feelings of inadequacy. But as Kate says, “Compare yourself to yourself, not to others.”

4. The Workplace Matters Supportive managers and inclusive environments significantly reduce imposter feelings. A lack of representation — being the “only one like you” in the room — heightens self-doubt. Organizations have a key role in addressing this.

5. Overworking and Overqualifying One common response to imposter feelings is over-preparation — spending hours ensuring you can answer every possible question. Another is seeking yet another qualification to prove worth. While preparation is good, Kate distinguishes between adaptive and maladaptive coping.

Coping Strategies That Work:

Internalize Positive Feedback: Don’t just hear compliments — believe them. Save specific, detailed praise and refer back to it.

Be Specific with Praise: Generic “great job” comments don’t help. Feedback like “Your attention to detail made the project a success” is far more impactful.

Know When 'Good Enough' Is Enough: Perfectionism feeds the imposter phenomenon. Sometimes “good enough” truly is.

Plan — But Not Too Much: Preparation should serve you, not stress you.

Derek Arden, joined by the remarkable Sean West—former British soldier turned successful entrepreneur and elite security specialist.

Welcome to this week’s exciting episode of Monday Night Live!

Hello everyone, I'm Derek Arden and welcome to another inspiring edition of Monday Night Live.

Incredible Journey of Sean West

Welcome to this week’s Monday Night Live hosted by Derek Arden, where we were joined by the remarkable Sean West—former British soldier turned successful entrepreneur and elite security specialist. In this gripping episode, Sean opens up about his time in the British Army, high-stakes missions around the globe, and the surprising lessons he learned on his journey to becoming a business owner in the ultra-demanding world of private security.

Life in the British Army: Grit, Growth & Global Missions

Sean’s journey began at just 16 years old when he enlisted in the British Army, entering a world of extreme physical and mental challenge. He shares what it was like to grow up fast in the military—how tough the initial training was, how many didn't make it through, and what it meant to finally "earn the beret."

From Northern Ireland to Beijing and Afghanistan, Sean found himself on presidential security teams and deep within hostile regions, gaining life-changing experience and resilience. He spoke about the camaraderie and chemistry among soldiers from diverse backgrounds—people from all over the world uniting in shared missions.

On the Ground in Afghanistan: Frontline Perspective

Sean gave us an eye-opening look at early post-9/11 operations in Afghanistan, including some close calls and complicated missions. While he didn’t personally negotiate with the Taliban, he worked closely with government agencies and serious organized crime units—always with the aim of protecting others under incredibly high-pressure conditions.

Transitioning to Civilian Life: From Operator to Entrepreneur

Returning to the UK, Sean pivoted into the private security industry, starting out as an operator for high-net-worth individuals, including celebrities and professional athletes. His reputation for calm professionalism quickly grew: clients often asked, "Can we have Sean again?"

But running a business was a whole new battlefield. Sean candidly discusses the difference between being a top-tier operator and running a company—where you have to switch from chess piece to chess player, thinking strategically rather than just executing tasks.

Business Booms and Busts: Lessons in Resilience

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sean’s business flourished. Russian clients were doubling down on protection, creating a boom in demand. But that success was short-lived. When sanctions hit after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Sean lost 90% of his business in just three weeks.

It was a brutal lesson in client diversification and risk management—but one that didn’t break him. Instead, it forged a smarter, more agile entrepreneur.

Protecting Footballers, Families & Fortunes

Ever wondered what it takes to protect a footballer earning £350,000 a week? Sean takes us behind the scenes of match-day security, residential protection, and family safeguarding. Footballers might not always need round-the-clock bodyguards, but their schedules are public, making them vulnerable—and Sean's team is ready for every scenario.

Dogs, Networks & Due Diligence

We also talked about the crucial role of security dogs and how intuitive they are ...

From the Classroom to National Sport Leadership

Sallie’s story begins in the world of education, where she taught physical education with a passion for helping young people thrive. Welcome to Monday Night Live

Welcome to this week’s exciting episode of Monday Night Live!

Special Guest: Jasmin Faulk

An Extraordinary Journey of Courage, Culture & Resilience Watch this powerful episode now — and be inspired!

Who Is Jasmin Faulk?

Jasmin Faulk is a woman of extraordinary strength and depth, whose life story reads like a gripping novel — but it's all true. Born in Saudi Arabia to a Muslim father and an Italian Catholic mother, Jasmin spent the first 25 years of her life navigating the complex world of dual identity in one of the most conservative regimes in the world.

This week on Monday Night Live, hosted by Derek Arden, Jasmin shares her story with incredible honesty, warmth, and insight. From her upbringing in a deeply traditional society to her daring escape to the United States, Jasmin's story is not only captivating — it’s deeply moving and incredibly relevant in today’s world.

A Childhood Between Worlds

Jasmin began the episode by walking us through her early life. Her parents’ cross-cultural love story was rare for its time — a Saudi architecture student and a post-war Italian woman who fell in love in Florence in the 1960s. Although they came from two drastically different worlds, their union was marked by openness and acceptance, with both families embracing one another.

But for Jasmin, growing up in Saudi Arabia as a bicultural child meant always feeling like an outsider — even within her own home. Her Italian mother tried to assimilate into Saudi culture, even converting to Islam, but the deep contrasts in tradition and lifestyle never went unnoticed. Jasmin sensed early on that something about her life felt “off” and dreamed of a different future — one that felt out of reach.

A Dangerous Dream of Freedom

As Jasmin entered adolescence, the limitations of her life as a Saudi woman became more stark. While men in her culture had choices and freedoms — to study abroad, to marry outside their culture — those same options were denied to women. Jasmin’s longing for freedom grew into an obsession.

Her escape was meticulously planned. With the help of a trusted cousin and a bold, carefully orchestrated lie, she secured permission to travel — and made it to the airport in full traditional dress. With fear gripping her every step, she passed through security and boarded a plane. The moment the wheels lifted off the tarmac, she knew she was free.

She eventually made her way to the United States — a land she had fantasized about since childhood, thanks to American films and music — and began the next chapter of her life.

A New Life, a New Identity

Jasmin’s transition to life in America was not without its struggles. She had to learn and do everything for the first time — drive, open a bank account, speak freely, make independent choices. But each step was a victory. Over time, she earned degrees in sociology, multiculturalism, creative writing, and ethical leadership.

Her memoir, The Sandstorm, captures her journey in rich, unforgettable detail. In this episode, she also shares photos from her past, offering a deeply personal visual narrative to accompany her words.

What Jasmin Stands For Today

Now living in Seattle, Jasmin dedicates her life to activism, education, and storytelling. She is passionate about bridging cultural divides, challenging extremist ideologies, and advocating for tolerance, open-mindedness, and resilience.

Derek Arden with Karen Young Discuss LinkedIn Marketing Strategies

Welcome to this week’s exciting episode of Monday Night Live! Our host Derek Arden sat down with the brilliant Karen Young – Founder and CEO of Ethos Metrics – to discuss everything LinkedIn, marketing, and creative strategies for UK SMEs. Karen, with her 30 years of marketing experience across diverse sectors including British Airways and other leading companies, delivered a fun yet deeply informative presentation that left everyone inspired.

An Engaging StartKaren kicked off the session by admitting that she sometimes feels like an “imposter” when talking about LinkedIn marketing. Despite that playful remark, her expertise shone through as she explained how, beyond simply spending budgets on ads, businesses can leverage LinkedIn as a powerful free channel to generate meaningful connections and quality leads. Derek and Karen emphasized the importance of forging authentic relationships rather than sending random connection requests, and Karen shared her unique perspective on targeting the right audience—especially freelance marketing directors and managers who are truly interested in engaging with insightful content.

The Power of LinkedInKaren highlighted why LinkedIn remains the premier business social media platform, boasting a user base of 44 million in the UK alone and rising steadily. She explained that with 56% male users and a professional environment where 61% of UK professionals are active, LinkedIn presents an ideal platform to reach decision makers. Karen also noted, with a lighthearted tone and plenty of emojis like , that LinkedIn is remarkably less toxic than other social networks, making it the perfect space for professional discourse and networking. Her practical advice covered how to optimize visibility by posting quality content regularly and engaging with the right people—ensuring that the algorithm boosts those posts to the intended audience.

Quality Over QuantityOne major theme of the discussion was the importance of strategy. Karen advised that simply amassing connections isn’t enough; instead, focus on connecting with individuals likely to engage with your content. For instance, linking up with key freelance marketing experts can make a huge difference in how many likes, comments, and shares your posts receive. Karen also explained the nuances of LinkedIn’s algorithm: if your posts fail to captivate within the first hour, they’re likely to vanish from view. Therefore, she recommended that each post should be crafted with a strategic aim—curating a network that is genuinely interested and responsive.

Content is KingSwitching the conversation to content creation, Karen shared her fondness for using unedited, authentic videos rather than overly polished productions. According to her, real-life authenticity wins the day as video content generates memorable impressions—often leading to face-to-face interactions after an online encounter. She also discussed the benefits of posting pictures, particularly selfies, which help humanize your brand and build a recognizable persona. Karen noted that every piece of content, whether it be a thought-provoking post or a relatable video, should invite conversation and encourage organic engagement from the right audience.

Insider Tips and TricksThe conversation soon moved into some insider tactics for both organic reach and paid strategies. Karen explained the distinctions between impressions, likes, and comments on LinkedIn. She stressed that beyond the jargon, real engagement comes when posts invite thoughtful discussion—not just automated group responses. Additionally, she touched on LinkedIn advertising options such as thought leadership ads and le...

Interview techniques Derek Ardeh with Michael Dodd

Welcome to Monday Night Live

Welcome to another insightful episode of and now a leading expert on mnday Night Live! I’m Derek Arden, and this week, I’m joined by the fantastic Michael Dodd – a seasoned journalist, foreign correspondent, Media communication and interview techniques.

Michael’s career kicked off in Sydney with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), where he was trained in the art of asking “blowtorch on the belly” questions – tough, persistent inquiries designed to put real pressure on political figures. This phrase, coined by an Australian politician, became the backbone of Michael’s journalistic style, pushing for truth and accountability.

In our conversation, Michael shares his journey from covering politics in Canberra to witnessing the historic revolutions of Eastern Europe, including the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Velvet Revolution in Prague. He tells a captivating story of interviewing Václav Havel, the Czech dissident-playwright who would later become president. Havel’s masterful response to a tough question about his political ambitions became a defining moment in Michael’s career and illustrates how great communicators can turn pointed questions into opportunities for impactful messaging.

As we shift to modern-day media dynamics, Michael offers a behind-the-scenes look at how journalists operate during high-stakes press conferences, like those with Prime Ministers or Presidents. He explains how competitive journalists, from Sky News to the BBC, often don’t coordinate their questions but instead aim to deliver the sharpest queries for their respective audiences and editors.

We also dive into Michael’s transition from journalism to media training. He now teaches business leaders, politicians, and even sports coaches how to respond to difficult questions with confidence and clarity. His approach is rooted in integrity – always advocating for honest and effective communication rather than evasiveness.

Michael introduces us to his golden formula, the ABCDE method, for crafting powerful responses to tough questions:

A: Answer the question (or acknowledge it if you can’t fully respond).B: Bridge – smoothly transition to your key message.C: Content – deliver your core message clearly and concisely.D: Dangle – set up your example or supporting evidence.E: Example – share a compelling story or data point to reinforce your message.Throughout the session, Michael emphasizes the importance of preparation and truth, especially in an age where disinformation can easily sway public opinion. We touch on the rise of false narratives, citing figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk, and the challenges this poses for credible journalism. Michael underlines the critical role journalists play in combating misinformation and holding power to account – a responsibility that’s never been more vital.

We also discuss how these media dynamics affect leaders in business and sports. Michael shares anecdotes from his media training with rugby league teams and how captains and managers can apply the ABCDE formula to defuse criticism and refocus on positive actions, even under pressure from hostile media or frustrated fans.

From dissecting press conference tactics to reflecting on the wider implications of truth and integrity in public discourse, Michael brings a wealth of wisdom, wit, and practical advice to this conversation.

For those interested in learning more about Michael’s approach, he mentions his book, Great Answers to Tough Questions at Work, which dives deeper into his ABCDE strategy and how to stay composed and effective when the heat is on.
