Welcome back to another episode of Mortal and Strong The Podcast. Today, we are joined by the fantastic Charlie.
Charlie discusses her story of cardiac arrhythmia and cardiac syncope. Charlie's symptoms started during childhood, regularly passing out while playing games and doing exercise at school. She was repeatedly dismissed by doctors, with this cycle continuing throughout Charlies teen years and well into adulthood. Eventually after years of experiencing debilitating fatigue, exercise intolerance, extensive testing for other conditions, Charlie was finally diagnosed and treatment could at last begin.
Charlies story is sadly not uncommon, but a stark reminder of how medical gaslighting can be devastating to the patients experiencing it. Charlie recalls how she was told so many times that nothing was wrong and it was all in her head, that she began to question whether they were right. She was sent multiple times for psychiatric assessment, despite having a physical condition (that was undiagnosed).
Charlie talks openly, and honestly about her experiences, while offering insightful advice to encourage others to keep advocating for themselves. Despite all that Charlie has been through she remains hopeful, and dedicated to advocating for others in the cardiac sphere. Charlie is one of our fantastic artists for the Scars of Gold Campaign, as well as curator for Sudden Cardiac Art (in conjunction with our friends at HeartCharged) - a brilliant art show focusing on cardiac health.
A huge thank you to Charlie for coming and sharing her story with us, and being another excellent voice for the Scars of Gold campaign!

She discusses how frustrating she finds the dreaded 'you look well' comments, and shares insightful opinions on why this doesn't always come across as well meaning as intended!
Kim's episode is another important insight into what it is like to face your mortality at a young age, and despite the hard times, Kim still finds so much to be grateful for and still manages to find joy every day.

Next up on the Mortal and Strong Podcast, is the wonderful Kerrie.
Kerrie talks us through her journey of being born with congenital heart disease, eventually being formally diagnosed with Aortic Stenosis experiencing her first open heart surgery as a baby.
After this, Kerrie grew up mostly unaware of her heart condition until the age of 27 when she found out she also had a bicuspid aortic valve, a heart valve abnormality where the aortic valve has two leaflets instead of the usual three. This lead to yet another open heart surgery, where Kerrie had to have her complete aortic valve replaced. Devastatingly, Kerrie's body rejected this valve and she was forced to undergo yet another surgery for a further replacement. She talks us through this whole process, giving a detailed insight into this intense surgery and the mental and physical toll this took on her.
Things were looking up, Kerrie got married, had a child, and was finding her feet again when she abruptly got a heart infection that went Septic. Kerrie speaks so eloquently about this horrific time, and the emotional trauma she faced; from not being diagnosed straight away, to being told she needed surgery and the doctors not thinking she would make it. After being in an induced coma for 20 days while the doctors rebuilt her heart, including another aortic valve replacement, Kerrie beat the odds and woke up!
Kerrie's story is intense, but full of hope, self advocation, and a fierce determination to live. We are so grateful to Kerrie for sharing her powerful story with us for the Scars of Gold Campaign!

We are delighted and honoured to share our latest interview with another incredible Voice from the Scars Of Gold campaign - our wonderful charity Ambassador and a voice from the record-breaking band Atomic Kitten; Natasha Hamilton. Natasha has joined our charity as an ambassador and as one of the 100 Voices sharing her story of facing life changing health conditions at a young age. In this episode Natasha shares with charity founder Dr Liz Murray how growing up in a girl band from a teenager and the pressures that went with this led to serious mental health issues and severe postnatal depression. Natasha shares the highs and lows of being in the music industry from a young age with some brilliant and funny stories, whilst also sharing of the intensity and lack of mental health support for pop bands in the 90's. After having children Natasha left the music industry for a while and focused on her own wellbeing and nurturing her own family, but shares something that so many people discover too late; how sometimes life stresses take their toll physically. Natasha then went on to be diagnosed with autoimmune disease (thyroid disease) and how this has had a profound impact on her. Natasha has now returned to the music industry not only as a successful solo artist but also launching her own record label to provide the type of support and care for young artists that Natasha herself knows is needed.
We are so grateful to Natasha for sharing her Scars Of Gold with us for our health awareness campaign; sharing a unique and incredible interview for our charity and being an Ambassador supporting our charity. Our latest Voice - the lovely and ever optimistic Laura H sharing with Dr Liz her experience of having tracheal cancer (a rare type of cancer Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma ACC), having a tracheostomy and the impact of this on her life. Laura woke one day to have a change in her voice but no sore throat, then began having breathing difficulties. For so many people this could have been dismissed as a viral infection but thankfully she was referred early for investigations which confirmed the rare cancer obstructing her trachea (windpipe). Laura immediately needed a tracheostomy which is a breathing tube into the neck which for Laura meant for months she was unable to talk. Laura shares the impact of going through a cancer diagnosis and treatment, unable to speak and in and out of intensive care. Laura recently had the tracheostomy removed before the interview with us and shares how having something rare and visible invited so much stigma and challenging questions from strangers in public. A wonderful interview discussing how to help others going through something like this, discussing the prejudice people can have of cancers needing to be 'caused' by something when actually they can happen for no obvious cause, and how these misperceptions need addressing in society. Thank you to Laura for sharing her Scars of Gold and experience with us and being part of the campaign.
