Listen Up Future Nurse
Episode 018 - Nursing is Steam & Dream of how it can become your future!
ABOUT THE GUESTS:       ·
Scott ·       Scott’s journey is rooted in a decade of empowering underserved students. Beginning as a middle school English teacher, he recognized the challenges faced by low-income students, which inspired his transition to high school teaching and later college counseling, helping students explore career pathways. As a college administrator leading pre-college STEM programs at Illinois Institute of Technology, Scott uncovered systemic inequities, such as the lack of pre-calculus in Chicago Public Schools, limiting access to STEM fields like engineering and computer science. Determined to address these barriers, he focused on exposing students to STEM opportunities earlier. After teaching, Scott completed a coding bootcamp and entered the tech industry, where he often felt the weight of being one of the few Black professionals in the field. Now a Ph.D. student in Technology and Humanities and a dedicated STEM advocate, Scott develops programs that foster early STEM exposure and build students’ confidence in pursuing STEM careers. ·

Aaron ·       Dr. Aaron D. Franklin DNP, RN, NEA-BC, CMSRN, is a New Orleans native with a passion for advancing healthcare leadership and diversity. His journey into healthcare began in his youth, with the support of his mother, who ensured he attended schools focused on healthcare careers. Dr. Franklin started learning medical terminology in 9th grade, volunteered in an emergency room at age 15, shadowed healthcare professionals in 11th grade, and worked as a certified nursing assistant during his senior year of high school—experiences that solidified his path to nursing. ·

Dr. Franklin earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lamar University in 2013 and began his career at Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) in Chicago. He quickly advanced in leadership, holding roles such as interim assistant unit director, hospital operations administrator, and unit director, before becoming Senior Program Manager in HR, focusing on workforce retention and strategy. ·

He earned a Master of Science in Clinical Nurse Leadership in 2019 and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) in 2021 from Rush University. His DNP project focused on the recruitment and retention of men in nursing. Dr. Franklin is the founder of Men in Nursing at Rush University’s College of Nursing, serves as an adjunct faculty member, and is the faculty advisor. ·       As President and co-founder of STEAM & Dream Liberation Labs, Dr. Franklin works to empower Black and Brown youth through mentorship and hands-on STEM programs, believing that early exposure is crucial for shaping future change-makers who will help their communities thrive. He also works on the workforce development team for the Rush System for Health and serves on the Board of Directors for both Rush University’s College of Nursing and the American Association for Men in Nursing, advocating for diverse healthcare careers.

ABOUT THE GUEST:
Dr. Samantha Faith Calhoun is a registered nurse and clinical assistant professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Memphis. She is a beacon of compassion, inspiration, resilience, and unwavering determination. With nearly a decade of experience
as a nursing professional, including six years in academic nursing, Samantha's journey has been rewarding, beginning at 22.

Born and raised in Memphis, TN, the first to graduate from college, the first nurse, and Ph.D. in her family, Samantha exemplifies the spirit of breaking barriers and paving the way for others. Her life's mission is to live authentically and to take up space as a quiet giant with the fearlessness to be true to her core values and her calling to care for others.

Challenges and self-discovery marked Samantha's path to earning her Ph.D., which was not an uncommon theme in her overall academic journey. Samantha reflected on valuable
lessons from a pivotal moment when she withdrew from her nursing school program during the second semester due to the challenges of the rigorous course load. In those tough moments, the compassion of her academic dean intervened, seeing potential in Samantha that she didn't believe in at the time. She not only persevered through nursing school but faced the additional challenge of failing her boards after graduating, only to rise again with faith and clarity regarding her purpose as a nurse educator. Samantha feels blessed to enter students' lives precisely when they need someone to understand and guide them through self-doubt.

In addition to her academic and professional achievements, Samantha's commitment to making a difference extends beyond the classroom. Her dissertation research was inspired
by the struggles of Black men in her family and her patients with hypertension. Her study examined Black men's shared decision-making preferences in the U.S. Mid-South region.
Furthermore, Samantha and her husband, Jeremy Calhoun, passionately serve the MidSouth through their non-profit, STS Enterprise, and Simply Faith, a women's faith coaching
ministry.

As Samantha continues her journey, she hopes to inspire those around her and be a vessel for positive change, whether as a nurse scientist, leader, educator or simply as a compassionate human being. Samantha's self-published book, titled "Simply Faith, A
Brown Girl's Book of Encouragement for Nursing School: I Already Quit So You Don't Have To," is set to be released in 2025. Samantha hopes to inspire others to live authentically, believe in themselves, and use their gifts to make a difference.

ABOUT THE GUEST:
I'm Daijah Cobb, also known as The Army RN. With a rich background in both military service and nursing. For the past eight years, I've proudly served in the Military, concurrently practicing as a registered nurse for the last four. My military journey began at the age of 18 when I enlisted in the Army National Guard as a 74D CBRN soldier. Fast forward four years, and I proudly walked away from the University of Louisiana at Monroe with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Transitioning seamlessly into travel nursing one year later, I ascended from the rank of E5 Sergeant to a commissioned Nurse Officer in the Army National Guard. Today, I balance my civilian career as a PRN Float Pool Nurse, attending drill weekends once a month as a Nurse Officer. At 27, I stand as a registered nurse in the civilian world and a dedicated nurse officer in the Military. While military service wasn't my initial goal, it unquestionably became my best decision. What began as a means to navigate nursing school evolved into a journey that opened countless doors. I'm excited to share my insights and experiences with you as you embark on your own extraordinary path.
