----Bug's Song-----
Title: I Hope You Like It
Prompt Page: Modern Girl -> Beckton Gasworks -> 1984
Lyrics:
You must be pretty bored by now watching me
just watching tv eating sushi off the cushions of my couch
so I learned a couple poems and I recite them in the dark
and if you like them I can learn a couple more this time tomorrow
cause I'm feelin' pretty guilty for my 1 surveillance agent
who's assigned to watch me through the 1-way glass
as much as I don't want this you have clearly drawn the short straw
and no one deserves a punishment like that
So I hope you like it, like what I'm doin
the little puppet shows I put on just for you and only you
I hope you like it, like what I'm doin
just for you
I can't keep novels in the house but I can do dramatic readings
of the pamphlets that they slip under the door
I do a pretty good impression of the freedom secretary
but my minister of peace still needs some work
If you like it, let me know, flip the lights but if you don't
I can probably teach myself a dance or two
We can workshop things together, I wanna practice and get better
the man inside the mirror, this one's for you
So I hope you like it, like what I'm doin
the little puppet shows I put on just for you and only you
I hope you like it, like what I'm doin
just for you
And when the revolution comes and they rip you from my walls
I hope you never saw it coming when your jurisdiction falls
I hope the little song and dance that I distracted you with is
the final tune stuck in your head when the realization hits
So I hope you like it, like what I'm doin
the little puppet shows I put on just for you and only you
I hope you like it, like what I'm doin
just for you

Title: The Thatcher Effect
Prompt Page: Modern Girl -> Picture Disc -> Optical Illusions
Lyrics:
Do you know that you talk in your sleep when I'm driving
Mumbling moaning mostly incoherent but
sometimes a phrase just slips out before you bite it off
I can't quite explain how it feels to be hearing you
Telling the truth after so many years
I could write you a letter or better put it in a song
You swear you're arriving
It looks like you're walking away
You blur my surroundings when I focus in on your face
Your features all scramble and change
The shadows are pulled centre-stage
Til I can't even see what I thought I saw yesterday
Do you know that you kinda look weird when you're smiling
It's all in your teeth, doesn't quite reach your eyes and
I bet with a little more practise you could have it down
The insides are all coming tumbling out
And the upsides are dwarfed by my towering doubts
And I can't take my eyes off this horrible mess we have found
It's not what it looks like
You say, that my senses are flawed
Look at this way, you'll see that it's nothing at all
I've come at it from every angle
What a brilliant trick you have pulled
I can't even see what I thought I saw yesterday
andweareback.

Title: The Devil
Additional Challenge: Chapter 2
Lyrics:
I never said I was, I only let you think it
I blurred the lines because I live my life between them
I wasn't always like this... wasn't handsome with a heartbeat and a smile
I was perfect up until the day I died
I had branches, I had leaves, I had fruits filled up with seeds
I had roots they left abandoned when they hacked me into pieces
built a house out of my corpse, I'm in the walls, I'm in the porch
but when I learn to speak I'll scream in every creak inside your floors
[Chorus]
It took some practice but I finally learned to fight
I could shift and trip my captors when they walked the halls at night
I could slowly change the layout, jam the doors too tight to budge
change the angle of the stairs enough to learn the taste of blood
I wasn't always like this but they chose to chop me down
but when I began to fight them back they burned me to the ground
[Chorus]
So I was soil, then a million writhing bugs
I was maggots in the graveyard, then the crows that ate them up
I spent 100 years invading every creature I could reach
slowly poisoning the town 'till every inch had bits of me
I drove them mad, I made them sick, moving pieces into place
slowly moving all my molecules in towards a single shape
and thus became the demon that you incorrectly name
I met the one you think I am, many years before you came
When I told him what I'd done he cut the horns right off his head
he bolted them to mine and said I'm twisted as it gets
So I don't know where he is now, that devil that you know
but I've taken up the title, I'm the one you fuckin don't
[Chorus]
---- Matt's Song -----
Title: Dead Boy
Additional Challenge: Click Track!
on a couch in a room in a house in a city on an island on a planet in a star system
i was torn out of the nothing and born into a body given eyes given ears and emotional disregulation
i coulda been anybody anything anywhere but here i am
on a couch in a room in a house in a city just jerking off and watching the same three shows again
and why try when you're not here to see how hard this is for me
i think i'll just let the dead boy take the wheel for a little while
and i'm fine okay i'm lying but it's cool
because the dead boys gonna take good care of me
in a drawer by the bed in a room that i haven't left once for three days now
in a place in my head where your face cannot get and your memory can be drowned out
i coulda been anybody anything anywhere but here i am
and the world doesn't end and the days never turn and the dead boy is cuddled up next to me, honestly well
who cares if i'm a car crash you're the truck that took me out
who says you can't feel sorry for yourself forever now
and i'm fine okay i'm lying but it's cool
because the dead boy's gonna take good care
the dead boy's gonna take good care of me
and sometimes when you hit rock bottom
all you really need's a bigger drill
and sometimes when your heart is broken
all you really need is engine oil
and sometimes when your friends stop calling
you'll sigh with relief because it's
finally just you and him on a couch in a room in a star system
and he holds your hand and he feeds you, keeps you needing him more than you'll ever need them
you could been anything, anyone, anywhere but here you are
in a city, in a house, in a room, on a couch, lying in a dead boy's arms
Episode 9 is here and Bug and Matt are reminiscing about the places they definitely SHOULD NOT have been on tour right before they hit the road again. Don't be a hater, leave us a good review

Prompt: "In a Scoring/Sporting Position"
----Bug's Song-----
Title: The Upperhand
Additional Challenge: Safe Space for Hate
Lyrics:
I am barking at the mailman
though you tell me there's no hope
Butupperhandr barked at milkmen
when's the last time you saw one of those
I am barking at the squirrels outside
and no one thinks it works
but my father barked at sabretooths
and wiped them from the Earth
We can solve it like our fathers, open hands balled into fists
if we solve it like our fathers we'll just end up in the mess we're in
Throwing punches when you're cornered, we understand
but you're punching when you have the upperhand
I am barking out at everything
I like the way it sounds
cause my father barked at everything
and I want to make him proud
We can solve it like our fathers, walk 10 paces, turn and shoot
If we solve it like our fathers, then our kids will solve it this way too
Throwing punches when you're cornered, we understand
but you're punching when you have the upperhand
The whole world loves an underdog but you can't break the rules
and start beating us with baseball bats when your team starts to lose
the screaming in the stands might sound like cheering from this far
and all your kids are watching and can't tell the two apart
and all your kids are watching when you tell them who you are
Throwing punches when you're cornered, we understand
but you're punching when you have the upperhand
---- Matt's Song -----
Title: Curdled Milkteeth
Additional Challenge: Something where it ought not to be
Lyrics:
i was driving through the highlands at a quarter to 5 in the morning in the middle of june
i was listening to a record that i used rely on to get by and thinking about you
stop the car at intersections, check my heart
spin the wheel in your direction
cause somewhere out in the dark
you're burning and all i need to do is to follow the heat
if i never come up for air i won't ever need to breathe
i won't need to breathe
curdled milkteeth
now i don't know this road from any other
i'm hungry and tired and i'm a hundred exits deep
and the valley walls are so high
that i must have missed the sunrise
if there ever was a sunrise
I don't know when it happened, but sometime in the past I got too tall to sneak through the rye
I suddenly recall how i used to rely on you to catch me before I hit the overhang
Kill the engine, try to soothe my racing heart
Turn my head in your direction
I've been told I'm bad at foreshadowing. Episode 8 has a bookstore. We meet John Demo. You've been warned.

Prompt: "An Opportunity Not Yet Past
----Bug's Song-----
Title: What Happened To John
Challenge: TRUE CRIME
It's not productive to compare all our troubles
playin "who's got it worse' to one-up one another
Its half a dozen of one, and its six of the other
you don't want to win this game
But the unspoken rule's now the talk of the town
the difficult truth no one dare say aloud
we all know who and we all know how
but no one wants to say
cause Marty lost his job last month
and Tom's wife ain't been home too much
we all have troubles but I'll tell you what
It's a shame what happened to John
Mrs. Carter, well I haven't seen you out of your apartment in a couple of days
she says my husband is halfway into handcuffs with no more hope of changing his ways
I'm pinching pennies, never spending any 'cause I'll have to bail him out or bury him soon
but when I go to church he isn't worth my focus as I bow my head and sit in the pews
I'm praying for another and I'm hopin He'll respond
its a shame what happened to John
And Connor's cough keeps getting worse
and Olli's luck has all reversed
we all have troubles that could be much worse
It's a shame what happened to John
We don't report it to the papers or go to the police
there's an unacknowledged understanding passing in the streets
the entire city's sick but have learned to be discreet
that's all that can be done
There were never conversations or plans of how to act
we didn't draft a non-disclosure or attempt to make a pact
there was a problem, we solved it, there's no more going back
the problem's finally gone
And Miley's finally out of bed
and Faith feels safe to walk again
we don't have trouble when we all pretend
It's a shame what happened to John
---- Matt's Song -----
Title: The First of the Everkings To Die
Challenge: Foreshadowing!
i met a man travelling from the north passing through my part of town
he wore a tattered overcoat, flapping open in the warm north wind, still carrying his service rifle
hitched underneath his arm
though the barrel was rusted and the stock had near completely decomposed
i didn't say a word, no point asking these guys anything
they've got enough on their plates from having nothing on their plates
but i offered him some food i had either going spare or going bad
and he thanked me with a nod and he kept on walking south
they're always walking south
don't know what they hope to find down there
four other northman came passing through my part of town
stacks of skin and castoff bones in those coats like rotten pelts
I gave them what I had, but this time one of them stuck around
Said the situations worsening faster than the snow can melt
He asked me what I did down here, I said I was a writer
At the very least I try to, but - he looked away he didn't care
He sat down right there in my garden, sunflowers in winter
And he told me what to tell you, and he left
they're always walking south
don't know what they hope to find down there
He says it's going to happen soon, sooner than you think
You'll see the symbols early but you won't know they mean
And the daydreams that you've come rest your head upon at night
Are like the permafrost, the first one of the Everkings to die
But there's time, he says, there are chances easy missed
There are lessons needing learned before the class has chance to sit
And if you really pay attention, really take the whole thing
You might just see where this is heading before the ending begins
they're always walking south
don't know what they hope to find down there

Title: Board Games
Additional Challenge: Giving yourself a nickname
Lyrics:
I should've never done it
I should've saved my budget
I can't believe I even tried when I'm the only one that
has the resolve and focus
to stick with what we've chosen
But as the night drags on I'm learning that this quest is hopeless
This is never what this evening was about
I have to keep it bottled everytime I wanna shout
Stop talking during board games!
Don't ask whose turn it is, its your, babe!
You would know that if you hadn't asked how Hannah's Graduation went
there were prolly speeches half as long as this distraction is
Stop talking during board games!
Do you know how long this took to coordinate?
3 couples in their thirties on a table-flipping thursday
now all of them are yawning by the middle of the 1st game
I've popped out all the pieces
spent 3+ hours reading
no, they don't call me the Rulebook Ruler for no reason
Sometimes this job is brutal
but I just do it, you know
I took all day to learn the lore and that was just for Uno
I wanna game but you hit me with reverse
now everytime you talk I wanna table-flippin' curse!
Stop talking during board games!
Don't ask whose turn it is, its your, babe!
You would know that if you hadn't brought up Molly's border-collie
now they're all looking at puppy pics
instead of killing zombies
Stop talking during board games!
now I think that I understand divorce rates
I was totally on board for in sickness and in health
guess I should have seen this coming from your 20 minute vows
But the worst part of this is, despite my perfect planned tactics
when we tally up you always win
All your talking during board games
to disrupt my strategy was your aim
thought I was married to a monster but it turns out you're a master
I can't describe this feeling but I think that its attraction?
All your talking during board games
and pretending you were always really bored made
me put down my defenses and fill my head with doubts
but babe that's really clever I'm so table-flippin' proud
---- Matt's Song -----
Title: JAM

Prompt: "Love Song to a Body Part"
----Bug's Song-----
Title: The Hydra
Additional Challenge: Rule of 3
Lyrics:
I admit I was pissed when you chopped off my head
and Hercules, you looked pleased (or rather relieved?) that I was dead
but from the stump of my neck I grew two more
(I swear this has never happened before)
but I'm back and better off than I was then
(and now they're singing)
Do you think the Hydra knew that THAT would happen?
Or was he surprised as everyone of us?
Decapitate me once, shame on you, that ain't enough
Do you think the Hydra knew he'd get back up?
The first dozen times were the hardest but now I believe
before this battle started I was hopelessly naive
but now this one's a fighter, and this one's a biter
and that one's determined, and this one knows German
and one knows Karate, we call that one "choppy"
but don't talk to this one 'till he's had his coffee
we're offering all of these skills
you can chop off our heads but you can never kill
we'll just get bigger and better and stronger together
I've tethered the best parts of me so now whether
You think the Hydra knew that THAT would happen
or if he's surprised as everyone of us
Decapitate me twice, shame on you, it's still not nice
Do you think the Hydra knew he'd get back up?
Now Hercules is screaming: "this is not how this one goes"
but you've mixed up mythology for history, my foe
cause history is what happened, mythology is imagined
now I'm rewriting this myself to be the hero of this battle
Hercules, your turn to leave
your trial subscription to life is complete
I've got many mouths to feed so I'll start with non-believers
cuz I think I always knew that this would happen
That I'd surprise the world with what I've got
Decapitate me thrice, I can do this all damn night
I think I always knew I'd get back up
I think I always knew I'd get back up
---- Matt's Song -----
Title: Central Occipital Nervousness
Additional Challenge: Must be a CON song
Lyrics:
i know you
i know you're my oldest friend
before we learned how to talk
there we were, lying there
hand in hand
i know you're trying to help
i know you're trying but
there ain't no helping me
i know you're trying but
sometimes the trying just
causes more pain that it needs
i know this
We've done this a million times
It was our first party trick
Everyone
Come watch me
Flip my shit
This baby can turn on a dime
i know you're trying to help
i know you're trying but
there ain't no helping me
i know you're trying but
sometimes the trying just
causes more pain that it needs
And the worst part is that I agree
This world is frightening thing
But I'm going outside
To see what I'll find
And you can come with if you like

Prompt: "Warming Up"
----Bug's Song-----
Title: Waiting for the Snow to Melt
Additional Challenge: cooooool
Lyrics:
You were the first one that I thought of
when the forecast called for snow
you said you'd race me to the bottom
and you took off down the slopes
You were the coolest on the mountain
making sure everyone knows it
taking shortcuts off the trail
while we just wondered "where'd he go"
You said the loser has to buy a beer
when we're back down at the lodge
and you knew I didn't drink
you also knew you never lost
I'd find you grinning, waiting for me
but I didn't mind the cost
it was worth it for the stories
when you got a little sloshed
now the mountains warming up as well
and we're just waiting for the snow to melt
cut to the crispest day of winter
you could see it in your grin
weaving past all the beginners
skiing faster than the wind
when I beat you to the bottom
that's when the fear kicked in
I MAY not know a lot but know
you'd never let me win
now we're just waiting for the snow to melt
We're just waiting for the snow to melt to find something we lost
someone taken by the mountain in a grave made out of frost
And when we find your body I will send word to your mom
she's the only one still holding on to hope after this long
yeah we're just waiting for the snow to melt
You had the kind of wild spirit everyone else tries to fake
you lived a life devoid of fear only an avalanche could take
now when our friends start drinking I'm the first to raise a toast
cause you're the first one that I think of when the forecast calls for snow
Now I'm just waiting for the snow to melt
to get a break and thing of something else
---- Matt's Song -----
Title: Warming Up
Additional Challenge: Must be SHARP
Lyrics:
you're just warming up to me now
i know that i can be a little too much sometimes
alright maybe most of the time
I know that I'd struggle to love someone like me but
You can see it
You can see it
You can feel the swing and sway
All my crazy, random flailing
Looks like dancing when you do it with me
Can't you feel it
Can't you feel it
I'm just warming up to this now
Not so long ago I would sooner die than be known
But you are gentle and slow
And the further this goes i swear to god it's almost like
I can see it
I can see it
Strap me to the spinning lathe
Take your tools to all my failings
Decorate the floor as you cut them away
I can see it
I can see it
But now I'm realising I could see it all this time
Oh why do I only like myself when I'm reflected in your eyes
I can see it
For the first time
How I outsourced all my smiling to you
How I gave in
Gave up learning
Let you carry me cause you offered to
How'd I miss this
How'd I miss this
How'd I miss this
How I'll miss this
How I'll miss this
Don't blame me for this title. This was Matt. Episode four of our once-respected podcast finds Bug and Matt diving deep into Hallmark Channel Movies and talking about their feelings

Title: Liberal Kitty
Additional Challenge: 200bpm
Lyrics:
He's just a feline looking well groomed
He makes a beeline for me when he sees I have food
And you can see why kitty is the king of the house
you'll never hear him coming when he's ready to pounce
His heroes are awesome: Bagheera, Mufasa
He doesn't care for Aslan as we raised him as agnostic
If you put on the Aristocats he does get quite upset
cause this righteous little kitty really hates the 1%
He's a Liberal Kitty
That's the Liberal Kitty
He shimmy, shimmy, shimmies to the left,
and has the right to meow
He voted for Kamala but it didn't count
cause he's a liberal kitty, and just a literal cat
He's just a feline sharing his views
He doesn't see why people care which bathroom you use
and it seems like you shouldn't need 2 jobs to survive
sellling toe bean pictures on the web to get by
He donates to causes, his toe beans are awesome
Between Bernie and AOC his favorite's a toss-up
He thinks we'll have a woman running things eventually
and he really thinks that catnip should be moved to schedule 3
He's a liberal Kitty
That's the Liberal Kitty
He shimmy, shimmy, shimmies to the left,
and has the right to meow
He voted for Kamala but it didn't count
cause he's a liberal kitty, and just a literal cat
He is my liberal kitty
he's from a deep blue city
his toe beans are so pretty
He is my liberal kitty
He is my liberal kitty
he's from a deep blue city
his toe beans: itty bitty
He is my liberal kitty

Title: Aurora Teagarden: Reunited and it feels so Deadly
Additional Challenge: Must be titled after a Hallmark Movie
Lyrics:
i gotta wonder what you're doing here
i gotta little too comfortable i think
i guess we gotta little used to not
running in running in running in each other
now we've had a bit of time to stew
to really soften us up and soak it all in
i thought i had a lot to say to you
but open my mouth and bite off the tip of my tongue
REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO DEADLY
REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO DEADLY
NANANANANA
what a pity that you brought a gun
i really thought for a moment you were happy to see me now
what a shame that i came prepared
with a kev with a kev with a kevlar vest
and then you ask me if i liked the taste
of my freshly brewed polonium tea
not as much as i like the sound
of the boom of the bomb that has gone off right under your seat
REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO DEADLY
REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO DEADLY
Hate is really just a feeling that we share
I squeeze your hand just to check you are still there
And I feel like squeeze back in the dark

Lyrics:
Its a tough day for the home team
moving furniture is easy, its the personal stuff that worries me
cause cleaning out your parents house is not how I imagined
while it looks like packing boxes up and sweepin out the cabinets
its another introduction to who you thought you knew
a one-way heart to heart that's hard enough to make it through
without the pictures up in frames on the walls of your office
a collection hand-selected to be handsome and flawless
I never saw the box of polaroids you'd forgotten
packed away inside a cabinet in the back of your garage
there's your first car with the hood popped
here's you at a party with my uncle in a headlock
some candids of you camping, this one had to be from prom
its strange to see your arm around someone who isn't mom
I never knew that you knew Marty since you were in second grade
In my head you met at work but now I don't know where that came from
A bunch of big assumptions never challenged while I could
A side I never saw because I thought I understood
None of it was fiction but I learned after the fact
I'm mad you never told me but I'm madder I didn't ask
and all the pictures up in frames on the walls of your office
a collection hand-selected to be handsome and flawless
I never saw the box of polaroids you'd forgotten
packed away inside a cabinet in the back of your garage
And Now I know you better than I ever have
And it's nice to meet you after the fact
And Now I know you better than I ever have
And it's nice to meet you after the fact

Title: Pull You Below
Additional Challenge: PRANK!
Lyrics:
You turned all the clocks back by 15 minutes a day
Til I felt like I was drowning just by being awake
You switched out all the lightbulbs
Til I couldn't even see my hands
There was a photograph beside my bed
Of you and me but I don't recognise it
Whispers and laughing out in the hallway
There was a time I think
But I'm not sure
You called me by another name
Where did I go
Pull me below
Under the water
I might be lost
For now, but I'm clawing
My way from hell to your door
You can't even look me
Dead in the eyes
So you won't see the lights coming on
So turn all of the clocks back by 15 minutes a day
I'm quietly counting the seconds away
Switch out all of the lightbulbs
Fill the house with shadow
There was a photograph beside my bed
Of you and me and I'm coming to get it
Something is moving out in the hallway
There was a time our love
Was strong enough
To raise me from the dead
Where will you go
When I pull you below
Under the water

Title: Fix Itself
Additional Challenge: A compliment
Lyrics:
I said "I dunno, doc" as I sat up on the table
my shirt off, thankful just my socks around my ankles
I've had no luck with proper diagnosis
my internet doctor just sent some shrug emojis
and so she jots down a note, this'll do the trick
get back to your old self quick
But I'm stubborn and a skeptic
but this doctor won't accept it
She says "Take This and Call me in the morning"
so I shake it and I say I can't afford it
but she insists and writes me a prescription
so I throw it in the cabinet with the other dozen pills
that I've ignored and sorta hope that it'll magically fix itself
now its been 6 months so I come in for a check-up
She asks about my regimen and so I have to fess up
The bottle is still intact
and my motivation's weaker than a childproof cap
This calls for a higher dose, you're so easy to diagnose
You're just stubborn and a skeptic
and this doctor won't accept it
Take This and Call me in the morning
I make a play to ask about the side-effects and warnings
she evades this and writes me a prescription
and walks me to the pharmacy and watches as I pay and leave
and wonders if I still believe that this'll all fix itself
So I'm standing in the bathroom, bottle on the windowsill
hyping up myself 'cause I've never liked taking pills
I pop the top and to my surprise
there's nothing but a note inside
It says: Take this, and call me in the morning
I love you and you're handsome and important
and I want you to feel like you're accepted
so I wrote you my love as a prescription
So I take it, and call you in the morning
my heart aching from the way that you support me
and sometimes I get down, and afraid to ask for help
But I know it won't fix itself

Title: The Other Boys
Additional Challenge: Must use the word "POPCORN"
Lyrics:
Popcorn
Now I have your attention
I got a two minute pitch and I'd like you to listen
So you've been putting up with suitors for a week now and
These losers can't do any of the cool shit I can
I don't have money, I don't have fame
Or blue blood flowing in my veins
But excuse me
Princess I'm not like the other boys
Dragon
Yeah that was me in the yard
Drove a 12 foot polearm through it's burning heart
You probably couldn't tell with my helmet askew
But as the beast fell baby I was winking at you
And the wizard in the hills who was raising the dead
I cut him a deal before I cut off his head
A hundred strong choir of your bloodline past
Singing love songs at your window
I don't have land, or military might
I don't have anyone to hold in the night
Excuse me
Princess I'm not like the other boys
They might have it all but you've still got a choice
Power and blood, connections and coin
Or me and whatever I've got going on
I don't want to scare you by coming on strong
But I'd love you better than any of them
No plot of the devil or creation of men
Could touch you when I am there at your side
And I don't have money, I don't have fame
Or blue blood flowing through my veins
But excuse me
Princess I'm not like the other boys

Prompt: "Not Guilty Anymore"
----Bug's Song-----
Title: Guilty Verdict
Additional Challenge: "Party Trick"
Lyrics:
Congratulations
Gimme your hand and let me shake it
A signature is all it takes, an engraving on the dotted line
and then you've made it
Turn on the news, kid
Everyone's got their eyes on you, kid
You'll get the credit for producing this, in truth,
all I did was introduce it... the rest is you, kid
You took the news like its a sermon but, but when I heard it
that shit hit me like a guilty verdict
Good news, you tell me I deserve it but
I didn't earn it, I didn't earn this
So have your way, then
I'll take the money and the fame, then
This is what happens when you're waiting on your break
and no one tells you when to say "when"
And if I lose it
I have no way to reproduce it
Just watch me crawling back to you, sit back
I'll ask for second chances you'll refuse it
The rest was you, kid
You took the news like its a sermon but, but when I heard it
that shit hit me like a guilty verdict
Good news, you tell me I deserve it but
I didn't earn it, I didn't earn this
I made a deal with the devil
I meant what I said when I said I'd do anything
Didn't think we'd make it as far we did
armed with our party tricks, all that we're carrying
I made a deal with the devil
I meant what I said when I said I'd do anything
Too late for take-backs or arguments
once you have started it, take it and bury it
You took the news like its a sermon but, but when I heard it
that shit hit me like a guilty verdict
Good news, you tell me I deserve it but
I didn't earn it, I didn't earn this
---- Matt's Song -----
Title: Pardon Me
Additional Challenge: Last Line == First Line
Lyrics:
I went and did some things that I shouldn't have done
(I guess) I got a little carried away
Everybody's done it, got their gun and gone to congress
Tried to overthrow democracy
Don't act like it's a big deal
It was just a party baby, hardly anybody was killed
Treason isn't treason when you do it badly
So how about a solid from daddy
Pardon me
Pardon me
I won't ever do it again
Probably
I mean no guarantees
Yes I learned my lesson, I guess you'll always pardon me
Say good boy and pat my bum
That was just a goof, a gaffe, a blunder, and a good dry run
I swear that I will love and serve, honour and obey thee
So How's about a favour for baby
Pardon me
Pardon me
I won't ever do it again
Probably
I mean no guarantees
Yes I learned my lesson, I guess
The best defense is a president
Who let's us get away with whatever we please
Pardon me
I went and did some things that I shouldn't have done

BUG'S SONG
Title: The Lighthouse
Lyrics:
On the tip of the island they left him to linger
in a lighthouse that clung to the cliff by its fingers
no comfort or company close to this coast
where he dwelled like a Gargoyle, guarding his post
They caught me red-handed, prepared my last meal
then gave me an out -- I took the deal
Stick to my station, keep my patrol
my only condition: don't hurt a soul
A hundred years pass me with no chance to slip
then on the darkened horizon -- I spotted a ship
With the darkness consuming, I lit up their path
there's only one route through all the rocks and the crags
I carved out a chance through the maze in the sea
leading the ship up to rest on the beach
The pilgrims abandoned their ship until dawn
but the tide never sleeps, when they woke it was gone
Without a ship to sail, the sailors advanced
to the valley below where they set up their camps
the timber was scarce here, which begged them to ask:
Do we use them for shelter or use them for rafts?
I watched from the ridge, an unreachable witness
A fly on the wall with a spider's ambitions
didn't surprise me at all that the first thing they did was
divide into camps, their first building: a prison
They dream of rescue, bless their hearts
I've watched them build and tear apart
Must now be years since they arrived
why must the heartless all survive?
Their children only know this place
They know I'm here but not my face
I pray they never seek me out
Oh God, the stores I could tell
They're not to blame, I wish them well
Oh God, the stories I could tell
Years on the island have settled the score
The village below me is violent no more
Then out of the sunset appears a new ship
My heart begins beating -- I have to act quick
with only one hope to correct for the night
I leapt to my senses and smashed out the light
By the light of the morning, there wasn't a sign
of the wreckage that washed away deep in the night
I swore to my captors I'd harm no one else
but not doing harm doesn't mean that I'll help
cause I've kissed the devil and can't be coerced
of all God's creations, this is the worst
with the lighthouse abandoned, I start to descend
you can find me among all the souls I've condemned

MATT'S SONG
Title: Orchids
Lyrics:
I watch us from the dark garden
Through the living room windows
We are dancing
You are laughing
Revelling in the novelty
Of my abandon
This is new, you think, I see
Your frown encroaches on your smile
Or very old, you think
But the worry's just a weed
We spin around the room
I am rooted in the flowerbed
And you are crying laughing now
And I'm just trying not to trample on the orchids
Midnight
it begins to rain
I pull my jacket closer
And you are snuggled on the couch with me and dozing
Visibly relieved
And I'm relieved as well, in my way
I try to catch my eye
But there's just no getting through to me
This is Good, I think
Hiding From the lights of passing cars
If I can't live it
Well
I guess I'll watch it from afar
You are warm and you are happy
You are safe inside with me
And I'm just trying
I'm just trying not to trample on the orchids
And as you sleep
I watch me blinking
In the television light
And maybe get a little taller
A little younger round the eyes
This is new, I think
Or something very very old
But the worry's just a weed
And I retreat into the cold
This is good, I think
In a way, a second start
And if I can't live it
Well
I guess I'll watch it from afar
You are warm and you are happy
You are safe, at least I hope
And I'm just trying
I'm just trying
I'm just trying
Not to trample on the orchids

Title: Sammy
Lyrics:
I am Sensitive, I know
I get riled up at the smallest things
and start screaming at the top of my lungs
I am working on it
but my job is very stressful
Holy shit is that a frozen pizza?
Time to cry my eyes out,
out of my mind with self-doubt
doubt you could live without me
me? I defend you proudly
cause I'm your last protector
Hi, my name is Sammy, I'm your over-sensitive smoke detector
Any locality may by ordinance require that smoke alarms
be installed in any building containing one or more dwelling units
in accordance with the uniform statewide building code
in other words: you need me
I know you're all frustrated by my beeping
but where there's smoke, there's fire
so where there might be smoke there MIGHT be fire
ok I'll work on it
but you've cooked that egg for 20 seconds!!!
Time to cry my eyes out, out of my mind with self-doubt
doubt you could live without me, me? I defend you proudly
I am your last protector
Hi, my name is Sammy, I'm your over-sensitive smoke detector
They say when God opens a door
he must also open a door on the other side of the room
just one door will not stop me from yelling
That's just how airflow works
that's just a little physics tip for you
inside a song inside a music podcast
but to calm me down... I just need... HER
Celia, Celia, Twirl for me love
no concealing how I'm feeling when I watch from above
Celia, Celia, this never gets old
they've learned to turn you on first before they look at the stove
Celia, Celia... the Ceiling Fan
Celia, Celia... the Ceiling Fan
(They're making bacon and I can't even fake a beep-beep because of you, Celia)
(It may be my low battery that's talking they ain't changing me 'till Autumn, Oh Celia)
(Learn good habits, change those batteries on daylight saving time, for realia)
(and while you're at it change your air filters too, basic home maintenance, celia)

Title: On The Morning Commute
Lyrics:
On the Morning Commute
Sing along with the tune
I can throw on a podcast, a radio broadcast
all the things I can do on the morning commute
The beginning of the day is easy, I have a list of tasks to do
Get up, brush teeth, make toast, eat toast, make bed, don't eat bed
get dressed (required), comb hair (that one is optional)
plenty of structure...
and likewise my work day is a breeze
between meetings that should have been emails
and emails that protect me from meetings
I am stimulated all day, left and right and from every
corner of my cubicle, a beautiful hectic chaos that
keeps my mind racing and taken up with TODO's
but its that half hour in between...
that damn morning commute
Sing along with the tune
I can throw on a podcast, a radio broadcast
all the things I can do on the morning commute
You know, we don't use what scientists call our "Active" brain when we drive?
It's why we can hold conversations with passengers (or illegally as I found out, on cell phones)
or completely space out and realize 10 minutes and 12 miles down the road
And thats where you find me. Nowhere to run.
Can't even use my hands to defend myself
No amount of NPR or Arianna Grande can drown you out
no crosswords to keep my attention locked down, and you know it
You say "haha! your melatonin might've saved you last night, but you're
legally locked into conciousness now, 30 minutes locked in a Mazda
with nothing to properly stop ya, so you should buckle up bud, I've come here to haunt ya
So I snuck out last night and went to town like the Grinch of Suburbia
Climbing every traffic light and shaking the red and yellow glitter out of each one,
flipping every stop sign around to it's "Go-Side",
a couple well-place cones and now we have TWO northbound freeways and everyone else
going south can just use waze or something
Because I am getting this over with
I painted over all the lane dividers on the way to work
and had enough black paint leftover to paint a tunnel on a cliff as
a shortcut to shave off another seven minutes... funny, isn't it?
It took a drive to make me learn my limits

Title: White Line
Lyrics:
low fuel light's been on for days
i haven't seen another car
since i passed petrol station
must have a week or more
i punched in your address but
i don't think i remember you
objects in the mirror disappear as they slip out of view
i haven't stopped the car in so long i can't even tell
leave it long enough you turn in to somebody else

Title: Not Your Fault, Kid
Lyrics:
It's not your fault, kid, I still love you
you're my baby brother
It's not your fault, kid, I still love you
you're my baby brother
I had a family: mom, dad, dog and and backyard
my own room a guitar
I was stuck on "F" and I couldn't get past it
and now I think it's stuck in the attic
or at dad's place, or maybe the storage box
that he got when he got kicked out
and that just happened to be, just happened to be
when you came around
It's not your fault, kid, I still love you
you're my baby brother
It's not your fault, kid, I still love you
you're my baby brother
but mom won't love you, so I hope that yours does
you've got her eyes, what a shortcut
and our dad's smile that I've barely seen yet
at least its absent every other weekend
when I'm dropped off and lobbed in the corner spot
on a cot set up in your room
how'd this happen to me, this happened to me because
because of you
It's not your fault, kid, I still love you
you're my baby brother
It's not your fault, kid, I still love you
you're my...
but you're not a text on his phone left unguarded
you're not a hotel charged to the family card you're not
even them caught in the act, you were 9 months past
now you can't be ignored or talked out
you just happen to be, just happen to be
the proof that knocked us down
If I seem shut down and muted thats just what I've found is easiest
but I've changed so much can't tell what's me and what's now ship of theseus
If I seem shut down and muted thats just what I've found is easiest
but I've changed so much can't tell what's me and what's now ship of theseus
It's not your fault, kid, I still love you
you're my baby brother

Title: The Family Dog
Lyrics:
okay
are you done
i've been over here biting my tongue
let me just catch my breath
really swill this blood around
let it get
into every gap in between my teeth
every cavity from the years of sweetness
you forcefed me
i swallowed it all with a thank you and smile
not so pretty anymore am i
what's the matter baby, you look like
you got your face chewed off by the family dog
I'm only playing, and it's cute that you
Think this is really the worst I could do
I never know what I can chew until I've bitten it off
So make your next move
Carefully
Don't set off my instincts
Oh the things
I could say
light the fuse on the bomb in your brain
Give a wink
Take a bow
And let you take the win
walk away
when the fuse burns down
in a year from now
it'd blow and your skull would be hollowed out
I know you better than anyone ever has
I know how to take you down
But
I won't
not so pretty anymore am i
what's the matter baby, you look like
you got your face chewed off by the family dog
I'm only playing, and it's cute that you
Think this is really the worst I could do
I never know what I can chew until I've bitten it off
So make your next move
Carefully
Don't set off my instincts

Title: Loud and Clear
Lyrics:
You're playin' DJ on our road trip and my ears are going numb
It's taking every bit of patience not to mute it with my thumb
maybe pretend that it malfunctioned and I'll fix it when we stop
but then you say "this one's my favorite" and you crank the volume knob
Why do you like this stuff, I haven't got a clue
what made a middle class big city girl like only country tunes
you don't square dance in your Daisy Dukes or line up in your boots
and you you ain't ever seen the inside of a country town saloon
I've tried to give it all a chance, I promise you I did
but I can't tell when one song ends and when the next hit song begins
twenty minutes in... lets just call it what it is
every hit song of the summer sounds a little bit like this:
a big bar crowd sing-a-long
a four-chord kinda country song
where the chorus always mentions beer
and the title, the title hits loud and clear
Its always so repetitive, they've got nothing to say
every aspect is generic, every lyric feels cliché
I respect the men and women and the instruments they play
but the hacks that they are backing have put all their skills to waste
cause the stars are all so similar, so handsome, could it be
another well-connected white boy up and moved to Tennessee
Has a network out in Nashville, plays a chord or two or three
add a fourth and ride a horse and you can end up on TV singin'
But did you ever think...

Title: Comparing Yourself to a Sillhouette
Lyrics:
Amelia was born on a saturday night
in the heat of july in the heart of america
and while the city slept, her mother showed her the sky
and speckles of starlight settled on her eyes and little Amelia Earhart knew one day she would fly
No that's not what happened
Can someone tell me why we obsessively mythologise real people, real lives like this
Like no one truly exists unless they live between the lines
of a fairy story someone writes?
Is it not enough for someone just to have lived, you know?
And to have lived extraordinarily?
Amelia 'melia, please
Come back to earth some time
I'm dangling here by a wire
And it doesn't feel like flying.
Do you think jesus understood that it wasn't enough to be a good man?
To be wise and patient and kind?
Do you think he knew that in order for his message to outlive him he would have to be canonised, and to be canonised he would have to die before his time?
Or was that narrative thrust upon him
Against his will
By a disciple who loved the message more than the man
And who knew that humans don't trust humans
We trust gods
And so this all too human friend of his would have to
Whether he wanted to or not
Become a god
Or be forgotten
And here I am, trying to be the best version of me that I can
Comparing myself to these silhouettes who
In the way they're presented at least
Didn't exist
Thinking that because I don't have a narrative
Because you couldn't project my story on the screen
That somehow makes me less real
And the thing is
I don't think I'm accepting that
I think i'm trying to turn myself into a story
To see myself as I see them
As only a silhouette

Title: First and Second
Lyrics:
I wanna tell all my friends about you
to tell my mom, who will tell my dad
to find the best damn parts about this
and celebrate the things I have... but I can't
When I was kid at the dinner table
my parents would make us make a thankful list
the top 3 things about our day
and I was always just the worst at this
Some days it was simple but most days it was difficult
my disposition leaned a bit more pessimist than typical
its hard to get excited, like if life finds out I like it
I will lose it, yeah its stupid and its superstitious
So when you ask me the top 3 things
I love about this, I still freeze up
I probably look like a well-fed snake
as I choke so hard on that softball toss
I should just say "hell with it", maybe just embellish it
"your laugh, your eyes, your smile" but I know I'm barely sellin it
its hard to get excited, if life finds out I like it
I will lose it, yeah its stupid, I just wanna
tell all my friends about you
to tell my mom, who will tell my dad
to find the best damn parts about this
and celebrate the things I have... but I can't
Why am I like this?
Why can't I admit everything's going well
Why do I hide it?
Hide all my joy in this bone-colored shell
So I thought and I thought of my top 3 but its something I just couldn't do
so here's my top 2...
I'm tellin all my friends about you
I told my mom (who told my dad)
So here's the top 2 parts about this love
they're the first and second half
I'm tellin all my friends about you
you told your mom I'm not thar bad
So here's the top 2 parts about this love
they're the first and second half
the top 2 parts about this love
is the first and second, the first and second half

MATT'S SONG
Title: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Lyrics:
I listed all my flaws in order
Starting from the least of them
The ones you might not even notice
Bedbugs scattering for cover when
the light goes on i just react,
it isn't evidence of sentience or anything like that
miseryguts
shut up inside my castle
overweight and
undersentimental
manic phases, chronic depression
what a shame that no one will ever...
I listed all my flaws in order
So you'd know what to expect
The ones that chafe your soul
Until the day your perfect patience starts to crack
i am a rock
i am an island
i'm the great pacific garbage patch
forget about
forgetting your birthday
i won't remember your first name
constantly expecting the worst
so i can say that i saw it coming
miseryguts
shut up inside my castle
overweight and
undersentimental
manic phases, chronic depression
what a shame that no one will miss him
