October is Breast Cancer awareness month and did you know that 58% of people in the UK (31 million people) hold 'outdated’ views about cancer with that rising to 77% of people from ethnically diverse backgrounds according to Macmillan Cancer Support, one of the UK’s biggest cancer support charities.
Cancer is not commonly spoken about in the south asian community and there is still a lot of stigma around the topic which those affected by cancer might not have anyone to turn to get the right support or have the right information.
Macmillan is warning that with more people living with cancer than ever before it’s never been more important for people to be aware of the accurate and trusted support available.
For information, support or just someone to talk to, call Macmillan’s free, confidential Support line 7-days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or visit macmillan.org.uk/whateveryouneed.
Today I’m joined by Priyanka Pandya, a mother of two and children’s life coach who was diagnosed with Grade 3 triple negative breast cancer in May 2022 who joins the podcast to share her story with battling Breast Cancer and tackling the stigma of cancer within the South Asian Community.

Happy Diwali and Bandi Chorr Divas! ✨
We are trying something new on the podcast this week and doing a South Asian holiday deep dive and breaking down why different religions like Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chorr Divas.
Growing up in the UK, unfortunately all these festivals are sometimes bucketed into one celebration when each community celebrates for a slightly different reason. I find it really interesting to learn more about different cultures and hopefully you find it interesting too.
So today we are learning more about Diwali and Bandi Chorr Divas! If you are celebrating, wishing you loads of love and light 💛
Love,
Preeti

Birthdays are supposed to be a time of celebration but to many of us it can also bring up a lot of anxiety and dread. It’s safe to say that I have a bit of a complicated relationship when it comes to my birthday. Growing up I loved my birthday, from 90’s bhangra music blasting in the living room to knowing that there was going to be cake and presents at the end of the night but the older I’ve gotten the more I’ve started to dread my birthday.
In this solo podcast episode I share my thoughts on why I have a love-hate relationship with birthdays. Breaking down the reasons why I feel birthday anxiety that lead to my annual birthday breakdowns, how for many South Asian women birthdays are tied to self-worth, pressure and milestones, my honest thoughts on turning 30 and tips and advice to overcome the birthday pressure and actually just enjoy turning older.
If you are someone who also dreads their birthday or feels anxious around their birthday, trust me you’re not alone!

Many of us live with skin sensitivities, whether that’s eczema, rosacea, psoriasis etc which can often affect our daily lives but these conditions can also influence our self-image and our definition of beautiful especially in this world of ever changing beauty standards. Life in your 20’s can sometimes be a roller coaster- it’s the decade of growth, figuring out who you are and navigating life being a fully fledged adult. Your twenties is where for the first time everyone’s path goes in a different direction but also according to society the decade we are supposed to have it “all figured out”- which is a lot of pressure.
This episode I’m joined by Manveer, a pharmacist by day but an upcoming chef/ food content creator by evening who is also one of my best friends and has been on the podcast before in Episode 8 where we spoke about what society's ideal desi/south asian girl looks like?
Since we are both turning 30 this year- i thought it would be really cool to reflect back at the past 10 years of our lives, sharing what lessons we’ve learnt in our early 20’s vs late 20’s, our memorable moments, our regrets and how we feel about turning 30. We’ll be talking about our careers and hobbies- how we balanced our careers whilst studying for professional exams and how we felt training for bhangra competitions.

It’s Preeti Personal is a British Asian Podcast all about sharing South Asian stories.
Back in 2020 I got to talk to Neelam, a TEDx Speaker and also the founder of Cysters- a charity focused on combating some of the misconceptions around reproductive health and is one of the only South Asian led charities in the UK who focuses on creating a safe space for women of colour who suffer from reproductive health issues.
In the episode Neelam shares her story of being diagnosed with PCOS, what are the common symptoms & misconceptions around PCOS, the idea behind founding Cysters and why women’s health is such a big taboo in South Asian culture.
For those who don’t know, PCOS stands for Polycystic ovary syndrome which affects the woman’s ovaries, caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones and sometimes cysts on the ovaries. Statistics show that 1 in every 10 women in the UK suffer from PCOS and worldwide it’s around 6-10% so it’s very common.

IT’S SEASON 3 TIME!
This is the first time that I’ve taken my mic out in six months but it's finally time to release the rest of the episodes I recorded in 2020 and early 2021. In all honesty, this season was supposed to come out last year, but Indian timing so here we are.
So what’s in store for season 3… In a few words, honest, educational and relatable conversations. I think the themes for this season are a bit more hard hitting as we go deeper into people’s stories around topics not many South Asian’s talk about publicly.

Writing for Hollywood and creating stories sounds like such a dream job. Prathi does just that, she is an actress and screenwriter living in LA. She’s worked on latest season of Titans, on HBOMAX as well as writing Plan B which released on Hulu earlier this year.
Prathi also wrote and starred in Bollyweird, an indie webseries that features a multi-cultural cast, a bisexual love triangle, and was shot entirely in quarantine. Available on YouTube (linked it down below)
We talk about her journey into screenwriting, South Asian representation and Indian house guest culture because that in itself a shared experience many of us face.
We also get into the deeper topics like finding the balance of being assertive without being labelled bossy and how obsessed Indian uncles & aunties still are about our love lives.
Thank you so much for the support that you’ve given Season 2, I really appreciate it. Season 3 will be out in September 2021.

Divorce is something that is very prevalent in our society but also has a lot of negative connotations attached to it within the South Asian community.
Data from the UK’s Office of National Statistics for 2019 shows 107,599 opposite-sex divorces in 2019 in England and Wales, increase of 18.4% and 822 same-sex divorces, nearly twice the number (428) in 2018. The majority of divorces of opposite-sex couples in 2019 were petitioned by the wife (62%).
In this episode I’m joined by Jigna who shares her journey with divorce. Jigna a full time finance professional and uses her weekends to create fashion content for her Instagram page. She also uses her platform to discuss a number of taboo topics such as is a divorce advocate.
Love, Preeti x
