Humans on the Verge with Kelly Carlin-McCall explores how individuals and American culture change, evolve, move from one stage of life, or one state of mind, to another. It is born from Kelly’s curiosity about the strange and miraculous opportunity to be conscious, sentient beings, aka humans, in these interesting times we find ourselves in at the beginning of the 21st century.
Each month two episodes will drop. The first one will be a conversation with someone from the world of psychology, philosophy, politics, spirituality, science, the arts,or entertainment industry to unpack their life experiences and ideas about how culture and humans change. Then in the second episode she’ll build on that conversation by examining the topic through her own life, and those she guides and teaches in her online Humans on the Verge Community, and then offer to the listener a few thoughts for them to ponder on their own.

I am thrilled for you to learn more about my guest for this episode, Rich Logis, founder of the non-profit Leaving MAGA.
As you know, I am fascinated with change – individual and collective change.
What does it take to really change our direction in life? How do we learn to see the beliefs and sense of identity that keeps us from changing? How are we living into our values, what we truly find meaningful in life, when we change? Are our values preserved, refined or do they evolve? Why is it so hard to change?
And what happens in a life when you’ve made some choices that send you on a direction that ends up reshaping every area of your life to the point that some important parts of your life now feel alien to you, no longer feel safe and welcoming.
And so you silo those parts off, and live in a new world.
But then one day, you wake up to see that you’ve made an error, that you chose a path that is not what you thought it was, and that you need make a new choice.
But because you have reshaped your life and relationships so much, you are afraid to admit the mistake, and even more afraid that your old world has permanently moved on from you, rejected you, can no longer see you.
My guest today, Rich Logis is a man who has lived such a path the last ten years.
Rich was a devoted member of the MAGA nation for seven years, but eventually, due to a string of events and realizations came to see that he could no longer support the movement.
He founded a non-profit Leaving MAGA for those have left MAGA and desire community, those who want to empower others to leave, and for those filled with doubt and remorse about being a member of MAGA but are afraid to leave.
If you have friends or family that you’re struggling to speak with about politics, check out Rich’s community, Leaving MAGA, that is here to support you, and if you are someone who has quietly quit or are contemplating leaving MAGA, Rich has lots of resources for you.

My guest on this episode is Craig Chalquist PhD, is a former psychotherapist, professor, scholar, and lecturer, who teaches and writes at the intersection of consciousness, place, story, and imagination.
He’s published multiple non-fiction books mostly focusing on Terrapsychology, Ecotherapy and exploring ones’ personal myth, but he’s also a fiction writer and has a series of speculative fiction books including his Lamplighter series.
He currently is the Academic Program Director of Consciousness, Psychology, and Transformation at National University, and has taught at both the California Institute of Integral Studies, and Pacifica Graduate Institute. And has recently founded Lampcove which is a part of the Pronaia Academy and was created to address the dire need for a New Kind of Change Agent.
Craig and I met a few years back at a conference where he spoke about field of inquiry and action that he has named Enchantivism which denote the actions of creative people at every level of society who give us glimpses of how things could be, making collective change through inspiration.
Among many threads of inquiry, Craig sees the need for a new kind of change agent who are the cultural edge-walkers with untapped potential for change. They are not dependent on the heroic-patriarchal model of change and can help us turn away from a culture of hyper-individualistic materialism that has unmoored us from the inner, social, and natural worlds and connect us to a new collective, overarching Big Story or “mythology” of meaning that outworn Patriarchal religion and modern materialism clearly no longer offer.

In this episode, Kelly deepens the discussion started in ep. 5 with Stephen Aizenstat about the deep imagination, and the process known as The Dig. She explores the metaphor of the horizontal and vertical planes of living, knowing and consciousness, and shares what she discovered in her own Dig recently that helped her bring forward a new perspective about how to stay present during the current chaos in our collective lives.

In this episode, Kelly unpacks the developmental politics concepts from her conversation with her guest in episode three - Steve McIntosh, the author of Developmental Politics. With the chaos of the moment we are living in, she points all of to stay focused on what we can control while remaining vigilant about what we need to protect. And because the personal, and now the collective shadow, has been brought forward in her first few episodes, she talks about how essential it is for all of us to look within to do our shadow work around our own tribalism. This is the work of humanity to do if we are to move forward differently.

My guest today, Steve McIntosh, has a way of looking at what looks like the current chaotic mess of American Politics and unpacking it so that you can actually understand what the hell is going on in this country. If you too are confused, frustrated and in disbelief, my and Steve’s hope is that we can give you a very unique, and for me a satisfying big picture perspective.
On my former podcast, Waking from the American Dream, I had Steve and few other folks on whose work is deeply informed by what is called Integral Philosophy. It is something I’ve been studying and practicing myself for about 20 years. I’m excited to bring this way of seeing humanities cultural evolution to you.
Steve McIntosh is a Developmental Philosopher who focuses on the evolution of consciousness and culture. He is founder of the nonprofit organization the Institute for Cultural Evolution and his latest book, published in 2020, is called Developmental Politics: How America Can Grow Into a Better Version of Itself not only thoroughly explains why we are so gridlocked as a nation, but offers a very unique path to help us move above and beyond it. Steve, welcome and I am so excited to have you on today.

Kelly’s Ponderama episode - The Shadow
In this month’s Ponderama, I take the themes from my conversation with Genpo Roshi in my last episode (ep.1), and unpack the concept of the psychological shadow, what lives in my personal shadow, and how you can work with yours.
And if you are curious about working on your personal shadow, I recommend Genpo Roshi’s Big Mind or the book Internal Family Systems by Richard Schwartz.
And of course, as you know, I do this work with clients too, in my courses and coaching.

My first guest is Genpo Roshi. The reason I wanted to have Roshi as a guest today is twofold - he was my first guest of my old podcast Waking from the American Dream - I love full circle things like that, but also I wanted my first three guests to be folks that have helped me build the foundation of my world view and my daily practice for the last twenty years.
Genpo Roshi was born in California as Dennis Paul Merzel, began studying Zen Buddhism in 1973 with renowned Japanese Zen Master Taizan Maezumi Roshi at the LA Zen Center.
He is known for his development of the Big Mind process, a method that combines Zen practice with a Western psychological process called Voice Dialogue, a form of shadow work that facilitates profound personal transformation and insight.
