In this episode, Mickelle sits down with Sophie Duong, a fully qualified European Financial Adviser, London-born daughter of Vietnamese refugees, and Barcelona-based risk whisperer on how to decode how to build a globally flexible life without sacrificing your future. Sophie manages €40M+ for 120 clients and brings a calm, human approach to cross-border money: simple language, rigorous planning, and zero shame.
They unpack the realities of international finances and why, where you live and where your money “lives” both matter and how to design plans that honor your dreams and your spreadsheets. Sophie explains the difference between an accountant and an adviser, when to call each, and how she acts as “triage” to assemble the right global team. Entrepreneurs get special love too: you can grow the business and your future nest egg - now and later.
Sophie also demystifies phases of wealth (accumulation, crossover/protection), flags common traps (PFICs for Americans abroad, UK inheritance domicile, beneficiary-based succession in Spain/France/Italy), and makes the case for stress-testing plans as rules and visas change.
In this episode:
Designing a globally flexible life that’s compliant and tax-smart
Adviser vs. accountant: who does what, when
Avoiding cross-border traps (PFICs, UK domicile, succession rules)
Planning moves before you move; optimizing where assets are held
Entrepreneurs: balancing growth today with future independence
Estate planning across jurisdictions—so money goes where you intend
It’s now - and later. Build the life you want while taking care of future you.

Landing in a new country can lock you into “go mode.” In this practical conversation, Mickelle and guest Erin Frobenius reframe survival energy: it’s useful at the start but it shouldn’t become your lifestyle.
Erin offers simple shifts that feel luxurious in their ease: budget your energy (some days two tasks equal ten), step outside daily, breathe, and choose presence over perfection. And act as if you’re staying - buy the plant.
They also explore community as self-care. Whether you thrive in groups or one-to-one, design your “team,” put the phone down at drop-off, say hello, host a tiny gathering. Embrace impermanence and let connection grow, even if the timeline’s uncertain.
In this episode:
Spotting survival mode and stepping out
Energy budgeting: two tasks can equal ten
Daily resets: walks, breath, micro-meditations
Community as self-care: build your “team”
Connect as if you’re staying: buy the plant
Preventing the crash with early mindset shifts

In this Most Played cut from Episode 64, Mickelle sits down with TEDx speaker and Resilience Mentor, Nina Aziz Justin, to unpack the Resilience Equation: time × beginner’s mindset, raised to the power of incremental action. Through her journey as a founder and mother to a child with a rare neurological condition, Nina shows how to build “inner scaffolding” and a custom life that can flex with change.
They challenge hustle-as-suffering culture, re-centering micro-joys, adaptability, and mindset as the real engines of sustainable success, whether you’re parenting, launching a startup, or starting over in a new country.
In this episode:
The Resilience Equation (time × beginner’s mindset)^(incremental action)
Inner scaffolding: sustaining a life you want, even in uncertainty
Why micro-joys matter more than chasing “big win” highs
Resilience without glorifying suffering
Custom life design: pivoting, flexibility, and timing
Mindset as leverage for meaningful outcomes (including TEDx)

Mickelle sits down with American photographer Darren Smith, House of Peregrine’s Featured Artist for 2025–26, to explore Mayflies—his New Coffeetable book which compiles portraits from gatherings and festivals like Burning Man, Milkshake, and Día de los Muertos.
Darren’s roaming studio, giving us Irving Penn vibes, invites his subjects to step out of spectacle for a moment during the event and into intimacy, revealing the entire persona and allows us a window into these events and the people who are “dancing on every possible surface”
During the interview they cover Darren’s peregrine path from small-town Virginia to Australia, New York, France, and Amsterdam; assisting the late fashion photographer Stan Shaffer; and the ethics and consent practices that make Mayflies a true collaboration. Darren shares how removing context (but leaving wristbands) deepens the story, and how curating 1,000+ portraits became an act of restraint, devotion, and trust.
In this episode:
The making of Mayflies and the art of “chosen” identities
A mobile studio: turning chaos into intimacy
Ethics, consent, and collaborating with emerging communities
Editing a thousand portraits into a living book
Expat life, impermanence, and raising a third-culture kid in the Netherlands

Parenting abroad can crack us open—in the best way. The lack of influence(and support) from family has a unique signature. In this episode, Mickelle sits down with parenting educator and Aware Parenting coach Maria Bordallo (aka Mama Maria), founder of Amsterdam’s Baby Fair, to explore secure attachment, intergenerational patterns, and why our nervous systems are the true foundation of family life. From leaving a role at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to champion cycle-breaking at home, Maria brings a grounded, elegant lens to raising children far from “home.”
Together they unpack how migration can mask old dynamics, why vulnerability is a superpower, and how “good enough” parenting plus repair changes everything. Maria also offers practical guidance for expat families without built-in support—community, help, and self-work as non-negotiables.
In this episode:
Good enough parenting: preparation and repair over perfection
The expat lens: “Wherever you go, there you are”
Nervous system basics: co-regulation first, especially in years 0–1
Six “don’ts” of dysfunctional families (don’t trust/feel/tell/talk/repair/see)
Boundaries and expectations when visiting family
Three pillars for internationals: community, ask for help, work on yourself

Dr. Kaisu Koskela—anthropologist, researcher, and lifelong traveler—joins House of Peregrine to unpack what global mobility really looks like when you live it. From growing up near the Arctic Circle to working across 80+ countries, Kaisu blends lived experience with rigorous research on digital nomadism, remote work visas, and the policies that shape how we move, work, and belong.
She reminds us: nomadism isn’t new—what’s new is technology untying work from geography while policy struggles to catch up.
We explore how nations still design systems exclusively for sedentary lives, creating gray zones where remote workers can’t fully comply—even when they want to.
Kaisu breaks down the spectrum: short-term workationers, true nomads who live in motion, and remote workers who migrate. She argues for policy “funnels” that welcome people at different stages—tourist rules that explicitly allow remote work, well-designed digital nomad visas, and residency paths that enable contribution, not just consumption.
Kaisu also tackles the hard stuff: transnational gentrification, stressed-out newcomers, and why banning local engagement is a missed economic and social opportunity.
Her take is pragmatic and humane—tax fairly, enable contribution, and offer the possibility of a future. For individuals, she urges intentionality: don’t chase a trend; craft your own version of location independence and understand the trade-offs.
In this episode:
Digital nomadism isn’t new; policy is just lagging behind tech
The “work–place” divorce: work is global, rules are local
A better model: tourist visas that allow remote work + residency pathways
Why many nomad visas fail (poor design, embassy requirements, no benefits)
Real risks: gentrification, compliance stress, blocked local contribution
Practical advice: design your own mobility path; freedom needs strategy

Garrett Vanderwielen—aka @tallredbeard—joins Mickelle to trace a winding path from LA film sets to life in the Netherlands, where identity, humor, and heartbreak collide. Raised with strong Dutch pride by immigrant grandparents, Garrett reflects on being “Dutch by blood, culturally American,” and how inherited stories shape belonging. A partner visa, a sudden breakup, and six months of couch-hopping became a crucible—teaching him to ask for help, rebuild community, and claim Amsterdam as part of his story.
He also lifts the curtain on creator life: how an accidental viral video about Dutch surnames powered a channel now blending wit with research—and a very vocal Dutch comment section. From the joys of bike lanes and herring stands to tougher conversations about colonial history, Garrett’s work walks the line between affection and accountability. He’s channeling it all into a forthcoming “365 Dutch Facts” book and steady improv shows with The Welcome Distraction.

Listener discretion is advised for this episode.
Jessica Stahl is here for a candid tour through her cartoons under her moniker Vanilla Cool Dance where she addresses shame, pleasure and becoming with humor and sophistication and a whole lot of humor and sass. After a breakup in New York, Jessica bought a one-way ticket to Amsterdam—with no plan beyond a brave question: What do I actually want? A year of communal living and a daily drawing practice unraveled old stories and sparked a movement: playful, disarming cartoons that make taboo topics feel less so.
They trace the arc from anger to invitation—why “calling people in” builds real change—and revisit Jessica’s iconic King’s Day street art: a cheeky royal tableau that turned the orgasm gap into a citywide conversation. We dig into how kink and tantra sharpen communication, consent, and boundaries (yes, “Are you still where you want to be?” can change everything). And we talk creative courage as an expat—making public art with sensitivity, humor, and a steady moral compass.

Here's another Most Played Moment, in this clip, Mickelle sits down with two Genesis members of the House of Peregrine community: Laser 3.14, Amsterdam’s beloved street poet and cultural icon, and Bo Smol, founder of the Dutch Web3 collective. What unfolds is a deeply personal and unexpectedly poetic journey through the origins of Laser’s signature style—a style that turned public walls into portals for introspection and connection. From experimenting with illustration and comics at home to bringing poetic lines into public space, Laser shares how his creative rebellion was born from both nostalgia and quiet defiance.
What started as a simple experiment—painting thoughts onto city walls—evolved into a movement that’s lasted decades. Through candid stories, Laser reveals how traditional graffiti often alienated everyday people, and how his work sought to bring them back in. He speaks to the shift from political slogans of the ‘80s to the ad-saturated cityscape of the ‘90s, and how he found space to say something meaningful, even if no one understood it at first. His reflections are textured by Bo’s insight into artistic evolution and public engagement—making this conversation as rich as the city walls it celebrates.

Today Mickelle revisits one of House of Peregrine’s most-listened conversations - with Jeanine Souren and Hans van Wechem of The Experiential Training Institute in Amsterdam. Together, they explore how psychedelic assisted couples work can open new layers of growth, intimacy, and autonomy in romantic partnerships, especially for those navigating identity shifts, major life transitions, or the subtle unraveling that can come with international relocation.
Jeanine and Hans share their unique perspective on why this approach often appeals to men who may be less drawn to traditional therapy, and how ancient rites of passage are echoed in the transformative nature of psychedelic work. They speak candidly about emotional safety, therapeutic touch, and what happens when one partner begins to grow while the other stays still —- a dynamic made even more complex by life abroad. Whether you're new to this modality or simply curious, this episode offers a spacious, grounded entry point into what’s possible when we heal together.

In this tender moment from Episode 23, Mickelle revisits a rich, emotional conversation with Kris Herwig as she reflects on the deeply intentional process behind her family’s most recent move. What once felt like an automatic “yes” to opportunity evolved into a season of active reflection, weighing values, emotional needs, and the unique challenges of uprooting with older children. Through tears, lists, and long talks, Kris and her husband navigated uncertainty to redefine what home could mean—this time not just for them, but for their growing kids.
What stands out is the emotional labor of expat life—how choosing where and how to live isn’t a one-time decision, but an ongoing, layered process. Kris recognized that this move was different: she was now raising Third Culture Kids. She dove into the literature to better understand their emotional landscape and the long-term impact of mobility on growing children. And as always, Mickelle brings care and presence into the space, having walked the journey of goodbye alongside Kris, honoring the endings with ritual and heart.

In honor of Keti Koti, the Dutch remembrance of the abolition of slavery, this week’s House of Peregrine Podcast features a powerful conversation with Rashi Favier, content creator, activist, and stand-up comedian.
Rashi moved from India to the Netherlands just before the pandemic. In her words, she “became a person of color overnight.” What follows is a raw and revealing reflection on race, privilege, and identity, from navigating caste and class privilege in India to experiencing racism and othering for the first time in Europe.
Through humor and honesty, Rashi shares how she began using her voice to challenge social norms, explore feminist truths, and connect across cultural lines. Her story is a timely reminder of the power of awareness, especially in moments of remembrance like Keti Koti.

Mickelle shares a pivotal moment from her TEDx talk, Can Blockchain Be Used to Decode the Future of Economics? A story that begins in a bank while getting a mortgage and unfolds into a raw realization about the value we create in relationships.
She invites listeners to reflect on the often-invisible labor that the entire world economy runs on most especially in international moves, and why it's essential to have value conversations before crisis, or resentment or even before committing to the work itself. Through personal experience and economic insight, Mickelle reframes caregiving as crucial infrastructure, worthy of recognition and compensation.

In this episode of the House of Peregrine podcast, Mickelle is joined by Doris Dario, relocation coach, speaker, and founder of dorisdario.com. With personal experience living across 5 continents, 9 relocations, and raising her trilingual children across 90 countries, Doris brings an elegant blend of insight, structure, and warmth to what can otherwise feel like a chaotic transition: moving abroad.
Doris shares how relocation coaching differs from logistical support, focusing instead on alignment, values, and the emotional preparation needed to thrive, not just arrive. Drawing powerful parallels between relocation and childbirth, she offers a refreshing take on ceremony, mindset, and the sacred process of reinvention.
