My hearing had remarkably improved to astonishing levels. The dripping faucet in the bathroom came to sound like fat droplets of rain plummeting onto pavement. Even when I was on the other side of the house, the sound was crystal clear. The sirens of police cars produced a loud and sharp sound that was very painful to my sensitive ears. When I heard the sirens, a base urge to cry out built up within me. Had the sirens blared any longer than they did, I suspect that a terrible headache would have taken hold. The change in my hearing wasn’t the only remarkable change either. At night, I could see things that I had never before been able to see without a flashlight.
