State of the Podcast

Handy With Handguns is going to become a seasonal podcast, taking a break during the Spring and Summer, and returning over the Fall and Winter. This allows for more production time, better episodes, and more time for me to do the things that I need to be doing within my own community, like mutual aid and firearm training.

But it's not over yet! We have a series of new episodes coming in the upcoming weeks discussing Hip Hop in rural spaces, and the impact that DMX had on rural culture. And then, a season finale episode on a whole other topic that is still under wraps!

In connection to this episode check out CrimethInc.com and The Red Dot District Podcast.

Tom & Erika Discuss Pepper Spray

This week Erika and I discuss what Pepper spray or OC spray is, and why I highly recommend that folks include it in their personal, home, and community defense plan. An edit for this entire episode: at multiple points I say "capsaicins" and what I'm referring to is the Major Capsaicinoid (MC%) content of OC sprays. I'm bad at using the correct words for things.

Content Warning: Discussions and descriptions of abuse and violent situations.

During the course of this, we touch on recent mass shootings, militias, politics, personal growth, and trauma. We discuss our own mental health, how we have factored mental health into our firearm ownership, and why building mental health mitigation into our firearm ownership plan is a necessary part of responsible firearm ownership.

Tom & Mieke Discuss Anarchism

Join us this week as we discuss the common misconceptions regarding Anarchist political theory, and discuss the relevance that Anarchism has within the existing rural American culture. We talk about Anarchism across history, the Russian Revolution, and resources where folks can learn more about leftist political theory and history.

We also depart from discussions of theory, and discuss a resurgence in mutual aid projects in our communities, and a possible renaissance of leftist political movement in America. We explore the natural phenomenon of folks helping one another in times of crisis and need.

We discuss the need for uniting leftist ideologies in dismantling the police state, and the difficulties in providing necessary community services without replicating systems of oppression and policing.

This week we discuss the role that AR-15 rifles serve in community defense. We talk about the difficulties in having safe and productive firearm conversations in America, and we talk about current anti-trans bills being presented by Conservative Republicans and what is needed from liberals and leftists to counteract the violent nature and intent of the Republican party.

Furthermore, and we touch on the ideology that is anarchy.

More to the Point: Shotguns

Let's discuss the myth and the function behind shotguns. I've believed a few of these myths myself, and an ever-growing education in firearms and ballistics has caused me to evolve in my thinking. It's also recently changed my views regarding AR-15's but we'll get to that in a later episode.

In short: shotguns are fantastic for certain situations when coupled with a lot of training and knowledge. But they are not the magical beginners tool that many make them out to be.
