Grounded Theory Unbound
Journeying towards Grounded Theory (with Dr Hilary Engward)

Welcome to Grounded Theory Unbound, a podcast about all things grounded theory.

This podcast is hosted by the ARU Grounded Theory Network and the Veterans and Families Institute for Military Social Research at Anglia Ruskin University.

In this episode, I have invited Dr Hilary Engward to talk about her journey into Grounded Theory. Hilary is an associate professor in applied social science, and deputy director of the Veterans and Families Institute for Military Social Research at Anglia Ruskin University. She makes a regular appearance on the podcast, so I felt it would be helpful if we got to know her a bit better. Hilary is a seasoned grounded theorist, but as with every researcher, at one point had to make those first tentative steps into her grounded theory journey.

I really enjoyed listening to Hilary’s story, and I am sure you will too.

Grounded Theory Unbound
Theoretical Coding (with Dr Laura Biggs)

In today’s episode, I am talking to Dr Laura Biggs. Laura is a research fellow at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Victoria, Australia. Laura recently contributed two vignette’s to the 3rd edition of Grounded Theory - a practical guide, written by friends of the podcast Melanie Birks and Jane Mills. One of these vignettes focused on theoretical coding and how to use storyline in relation to this. At the ARU Grounded Theory Network we regularly get questions about theoretical coding, so I felt that a conversation with Laura was a great opportunity to unpick some of the things related to it.

In this episode we reference to a figure in Laura's vignette. It can be found in the textbook, but it is also available in colour in the Study Guide for this episode, together with some questions to make you think further:

Content Warning: Laura’s grounded theory research addresses issues of maternal mental health and suicide, and therefore there is reference to this in this episode. Everyone listens to Grounded Theory Unbound with their own life experiences, and some may find these topics distressing and or upsetting. If this is you, please find a number of support options for you here should you feel you need them, and please do get in touch with feedback if you feel we could have managed this better:

Grounded Theory Unbound
Using AI in Grounded Theory (with Dr David Morgan)

In today’s episode, I am joined by co-host Dr Hilary Engward. Together, we are talking to Dr David Morgan . David is a professor emeritus in the Department of Sociology at Portland State University. He is a sociological social psychologist, who is widely known for his work on focus groups, and started his grounded theory journey during his PhD research. More recently, David published the paper “Exploring the Use of Artificial Intelligence for Qualitative Data Analysis: The Case of ChatGPT” in the International Journal of Qualitative Methods. . The use of AI in research, and specifically in qualitative research, is a hot topic at the moment, and will become more and more significant as time moves on. For this reason David’s paper fascinated me, and led me to invite David to the podcast.

Find David's paper here: https://doi.org/10.1177/16094069231211248

Moving forward, we will provide study guides for podcast episodes, to help you further your understanding of the topics discussed. Find the study guide for this episode here:
