Theoretical Coding (with Dr Laura Biggs)

Theoretical Coding (with Dr Laura Biggs)

In today’s episode, I am talking to Dr Laura Biggs. Laura is a research fellow at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Victoria, Australia. Laura recently contributed two vignette’s to the 3rd edition of Grounded Theory - a practical guide, written by friends of the podcast Melanie Birks and Jane Mills. One of these vignettes focused on theoretical coding and how to use storyline in relation to this. At the ARU Grounded Theory Network we regularly get questions about theoretical coding, so I felt that a conversation with Laura was a great opportunity to unpick some of the things related to it.

In this episode we reference to a figure in Laura's vignette. It can be found in the textbook, but it is also available in colour in the Study Guide for this episode, together with some questions to make you think further:

Content Warning: Laura’s grounded theory research addresses issues of maternal mental health and suicide, and therefore there is reference to this in this episode. Everyone listens to Grounded Theory Unbound with their own life experiences, and some may find these topics distressing and or upsetting. If this is you, please find a number of support options for you here should you feel you need them, and please do get in touch with feedback if you feel we could have managed this better:
