Shades of Gray | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E22)

James and Andrew tackle Star Trek: The Next Generation’s infamous season two finale, Shades of Gray—an episode many fans wish had been erased from canon. While it’s often remembered as the dreaded “clip show,” Andrew argues that enduring this low point helps you better appreciate the brilliance of Trek’s later storytelling. The hosts dig into what could have made the episode better—what alternatives might have worked in place of recycled footage—while also empathising with the writing team’s impossible time crunch that led to its creation. Unfortunately, it’s a disappointing note to end a season on, and the guys reflect on how much stronger the series would soon become. This review also marks a bittersweet milestone: Andrew’s final episode review on Give Me Genesis. Andrew will still join us for the season 2 charades and season 2 final review, with the hope that he’ll return for future episodes here and there.🖖 Like, comment, follow and subscribe for more TNG reviews!👑 Patreon – Support the show: www.patreon.com/Givemegenesis▶️ YouTube -- Watch is here: www.youtube.com/@Givemegenesis 📘 Facebook – Follow us here: www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61560015058600📸 instagram -- Follow us here: instagram.com/givemegenesis🎵 Spotify – Listen to the podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6C9v9aBx7rVxiwyE8UNONp📱Tik Tok - Follow us here: tiktok.com/@give.me.genesis#startrek #startrekTNG #startrekpodcast #SciFi

Peak Performance | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E21)

In this week’s episode, James and Andrew dive into Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “Peak Performance,” a story that could – and perhaps should – have closed out Season 2. They unpack how this thrilling war-game scenario becomes so much more than just a tactical exercise, celebrating Data’s quiet but meaningful victory over the smug and delightfully comical Kolrami. The review highlights how the episode smartly pairs up Picard with Data aboard the Enterprise and Riker with Worf on the Hathaway, giving room for genuine character development and camaraderie. James and Andrew also reflect on how the lingering shadow of the Borg encounter adds weight to the story, reminding us that their threat isn’t a one-off. And just when you think you know where things are going, the script delivers a double twist: a faux Romulan Warbird and the very real danger of an unannounced Ferengi attack. From Kolrami’s arrogant performance to Picard’s memorable reflection on how one can make no mistakes and still lose, “Peak Performance” shines as a layered and surprising episode. James and Andrew argue that it would have been a stronger, more resonant season finale than what we actually got – and they make a strong case for it.

The Emissary | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E20)

In this week’s episode, James and Andrew dive into Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “The Emissary” — not a heavy sci-fi tale, and not your typical plot-driven trek, but a character-rich story that lingers long after the credits roll. This one’s all about Worf and the unforgettable K’Ehleyr. The guys unpack the cultural tension and emotional conflict that simmer beneath the surface of this complicated pair. K’Ehleyr’s sharp wit, vulnerability, and self-awareness bring out a different side of Worf, challenging his stoic warrior code and revealing the turmoil beneath. It's a rare episode that trades warp core breaches for personal reckoning — and the result is one of the most quietly compelling hours of TNG. Join James and Andrew as they celebrate Suzie Plakson’s powerhouse performance, debate Worf’s choices, and explore why “The Emissary” resonates so deeply without ever leaving orbit.

Manhunt | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E19)

Originally intended as a sequel to “The Big Goodbye”... but somehow we ended up here.

James and Andrew beam in to review “Manhunt,” a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode that takes a sharp detour from its noir roots and lands us squarely in the flamboyant gravitational pull of Lwaxana Troi. Originally conceived as a continuation of the holodeck fun from Season One’s “The Big Goodbye,” this episode instead pivots to a more “romantic” pursuit — Lwaxana’s unrelenting affection for Captain Picard.

Is it a charming detour or an unwelcome filler in a season already peppered with lighter fare? That depends entirely on how much Lwaxana you can handle in one sitting. James and Andrew wrestle with that question and try to find the signal in the static of Betazoid theatrics.

A love letter, a misfire, or just a mid-season palate cleanser? Join us as we unpack Mantrap — the episode that boldly goes... maybe a bit too far.

Up The Long Ladder | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E18)

Clones, Cowbells, and Klingon Tea....

It’s two for two on the absurdity scale as James and Andrew wade into Up The Long Ladder, a TNG episode that starts off as rural space comedy and swerves hard into clone-based bioethics. While fans might struggle to find their footing in this tonal rollercoaster, the Enterprise crew seem to be having the time of their lives—Picard’s laughing, Riker is enthusiastically… welcoming Ms. Odell, and Danilo Odell discovers the joys of Klingon liquor. But just when you think it’s all shenanigans and hay bales, the story pivots into a surprisingly grim exploration of identity and autonomy. Does it work? That’s debatable—but there are standout moments, including our personal favorite: the unexpectedly touching tea ceremony between Pulaski and Worf. Join us as we unpack this curious episode that manages to be charming, clunky, and occasionally contemplative—all at once.🖖 Like, comment, follow and subscribe for more TNG reviews!👑 Patreon – Support the show: www.patreon.com/Givemegenesis▶️ YouTube - Watch is here: www.youtube.com/@Givemegenesis 📘 Facebook – Follow us here: www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61560015058600📱Tik Tok - Follow us here: https://www.tiktok.com/@give.me.genesis?_t=ZN-8xH2Hu4dxzS&_r=1🎵 Spotify – Listen to the podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6C9v9aBx7rVxiwyE8UNONp#startrek #startrekTNG #startrekpodcast #SciFi

Samaritan Snare | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E17)

"Samaritan Snare" – Starfleet, Sandwiches, and the Not-So-Clever Cleverness of the Pakleds or the Enterprise crew for that matter!

Apologies for the terrible sound for this episode. James was not smart. The mic was broken.

In this week’s episode, James and Andrew boldly go…into one of The Next Generation's more baffling outings: “Samaritan Snare.” The Pakleds make their infamous debut as a seemingly simple-minded alien race who somehow manage to pull a fast one on the highly trained Starfleet crew—much to the dismay (and amusement) of our hosts.

Is this episode fun? Sure. Is it good? Absolutely not. James and Andrew break down how this bizarre mix of unintentional comedy, lazy plotting, and deeply questionable decision-making turns the Enterprise crew into spacefaring fools. And yet, it’s oddly entertaining.

The real highlight? A surprisingly heartfelt shuttle ride with Wesley Crusher and Captain Picard, complete with awkward small talk, medical confessions, and… sandwiches.

It’s a strange ride through the stars this week—join us as we try to understand how the Pakleds “look for things” and somehow find a place in Star Trek history.

Q Who | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E16)

In this episode, James and Andrew dive into what might just be the best episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation to date—“Q Who”. What more could you ask for? Q returns, the enigmatic Guinan reveals more than meets the eye, and the Borg make their chilling debut.

James and Andrew unpack the brilliance of the Borg's first appearance, discussing their haunting design, their terrifying efficiency, and how this episode cements them as one of Trek’s most iconic species. The hosts also explore the fascinating origins of the Borg, both in-universe and from a production standpoint.

The conversation takes a deeper turn with Guinan, as the episode subtly hints that she’s not as human as she appears. The mystery surrounding Guinan begins here...

Don’t miss this rich review of a landmark TNG episode—this is the one that changed everything.

Pen Pals | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E15)

In this episode, James and Andrew dive into Star Trek: The Next Generation’s "Pen Pals" and explore its surprisingly rich storytelling and character growth. They discuss the strong writing behind the crew's ethical debate over interfering with a pre-warp civilization to save a young girl's planet from destruction — a classic Prime Directive conundrum that puts Picard’s leadership to the test.

Wesley Crusher also gets a spotlight in this episode, not as the usual boy genius, but as a young officer learning the ropes of leadership. James and Andrew reflect on how refreshing it is to see Wesley stumble and grow, rather than always having the right answer.

And of course, there's Data — whose emotional bond with the girl Sarjenka raises deeper questions. Is Data exhibiting genuine empathy, or is this just complex programming at work? The hosts dig into the nuances of his development and what it means for his ongoing journey toward humanity.

To round things out, James and Andrew get personal and ask: did they ever have pen pals of their own?

Thoughtful, nerdy, and heartfelt — it’s a great episode for TNG fans and lovers of moral quandaries in sci-fi.

The Icarus Factor | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E14)

This week, James and Andrew take on The Icarus Factor, a divisive episode that has some fans intrigued by its emotional depth—and others left wondering what could have been. On the surface, it’s about Riker facing a career-defining decision, but beneath that, tensions run deeper: a long-absent father, unspoken grief, and crew members confronting personal demons. Andrew likens the episode’s tone to that of a spacefaring soap opera, as interpersonal drama takes centre stage. James, meanwhile, raises questions that the series itself never fully answers—including a certain maternal mystery that lingers just out of frame. Together, they explore whether the episode tries to juggle too much at once—and whether its emotional core lands with enough weight. Some viewers call this a thoughtful detour into the crew’s inner lives; others see it as an undercooked family drama with rushed resolutions and missed opportunities. Where do James and Andrew fall? Let’s just say… not everything gets tied up neatly. Tune in as the duo dissect the tensions, the subplots, and the silences—and decide for yourself whether The Icarus Factor soared or stumbled.

The Royale | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E12)

James and Andrew beam into The Royale, a Season 2 detour into a bizarre 20th-century hotel where things are… oddly Earthy. In this episode of the podcast, our hosts land somewhere in the middle: while the absurdity of the plot doesn’t do much to expand the Trek universe, there’s still some fun to be had. From Worf’s unexpectedly hilarious lines to Data’s suspiciously emotion-filled antics (who needs an emotion chip?), there’s enough charm to keep it light. Is it a campy classic or a forgettable filler? As with much of the fandom, opinions vary—and James and Andrew explore why. Grab your quarters and step into the revolving door of The Royale.

Give Me Genesis - A Star Trek Podcast
We're Taking A Small Mid-Season Break

We are taking a short break over the Easter period. We have just finished the review of the remaining episodes of season 2, which are still being edited. We are back this weekend to record the season summary and season 2 charades, as we did for season 1.

This has been a fun ride, but also need to give disappointing news that Andrew will not be continuing on with the review of TNG from Season 3. He is moving away and his destiny lies elsewhere.

This is not the end, but a change. I will continue to review the series, but in which format, that is yet to be fully decided. I have thought of commenting / reacting whilst watching the episodes and making my conclusions at the end.

Other projects have been invaded my mind, which maybe added to the podcast in the future, such as adding other discussion topics such as "TNG Worf vs DS9 Worf", "Favourite TNG Character", "Top 5 TNG episodes which deserved a sequel".

I would also like to add a reaction podcast review for other sci-fi series, that I am not fully immersed in, and am relativity new. The first series that came to mind was Stargate SG-1.

Please let me know your thoughts and any suggestions are welcome. I have also attached the expected schedule for the remainder of season 2.

Contagion | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E11)
This week, James and Andrew dive into Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 2, Episode 11: "Contagion" — an action-packed installment that stands out as one of the more thrilling chapters in the early TNG saga. The duo unpacks the high-stakes drama surrounding the mysterious destruction of the Yamato, a sister Galaxy-class starship, and the ancient secrets of the mythical Iconians, whose long-rumoured technology turns out to be very real — and very dangerous. From Geordi's dramatic turbolift toss to Picard's historic (but unfulfilled) first request for "Tea. Earl Grey. Hot," this episode offers both intensity and memorable moments. James and Andrew explore how the discovery of an Iconian gateway — capable of instant travel across the galaxy — raises the tension and opens the door to one of the most compelling sci-fi premises in the season. A strong entry in the ebb and flow of Season 2, Contagion mixes mythology, tech paranoia, and classic Trek exploration in all the right ways.

The Dauphin | Star Trek Review (TNG S2 E10)

This week, James and Andrew tackle The Dauphin, the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode that tries (and mostly fails) to make Wesley Crusher’s first love story compelling. While the romance itself doesn’t do the episode any favours, Worf’s unforgettable one-liners and his interactions with Anya bring some unexpected entertainment.

Strangely, The Dauphin seems to escape the level of criticism thrown at Code of Honor, despite its own problematic moments—like Picard’s off-putting “everyone is human” remark and Wesley’s discomfort with a love interest who doesn’t conform to his expectations. Does this episode deserve a free pass, or should it be re-evaluated with a more critical eye? James and Andrew break it all down in this week’s discussion!

This classic Season 2 episode delivers a powerful courtroom drama as Captain Picard fights for Data’s right to be recognized as a sentient being. But is Data truly more than just a sophisticated toaster? That’s the debate of the day! James and Andrew share their thoughts on the ethical dilemmas, the gripping performances (shoutout to Patrick Stewart’s powerhouse speech), and why this episode still resonates today. With sharp insights and a touch of humour, the duo explore what it means to be alive in the Trek universe—and whether Data gets to claim his freedom or a lifetime warranty.
