Scott Schilke is a photographer who specializes in capturing breathtaking images of rocket ships, race cars, and extreme weather events.
At the youthful age of sixty-two, after having worked in property management for four decades, Scott spurned retirement and embarked upon a new career. When all his buddies were slipping into the long-deferred idleness of their “golden years”, Scott became a professional photographer. Now, he spends his days (and most of his nights!) photographing rocket launches, NASCAR races, and high-voltage lightning storms.
The fearlessness with which he set out upon this new journey, and the assiduity with which he’s continued to pursue it, are totally inspiring. I listen to Scott, and am convinced that there’s nothing I can’t do.
In this episode, Scott and I discuss…
The influence of his father, who was an officer in the Air Force; His passion for rocket ships; SpaceX, Tesla, and Elon Musk; NASA; NASCAR; Photography; Climate change; Electric Vehicles; Extreme weather; Hurricanes in Florida; Super Cells; Tornados; Having dreams and aspirations; Starting a new career; How to develop a passion project; Learning new skills throughout one’s life; How to chase your goals; and MUCH more!

Dan Levitt is a director, documentarian, and an author.
His latest book, What’s Gotten Into You: The Story Of Your Body’s Atoms, From The Big Bang Through Last Night’s Dinner, is now available for purchase!
For the promulgation of good science to the general public–in a format and a language that is accessible to all–we look, now more than ever, to trusted figures like Dan.
As you can see, his passion for science is infectious. I learned a TON from (first) reading his fine book and then hosting him for this amazing conversation.
In this episode, Dan and I discuss:
Materialism v. Spiritualism; Science v. Religion; The Big Bang, and what preceded it; Genesis v. Aristotle; The Steady State theory; The validity of Stephen Jay Gould’s concept of “Non-Overlapping Magisteria” (NOMA); Atomic and subatomic theory; quarks; the cosmos; Albert Einstein; Georges Lemaitre; Rosalind Franklin; Benjamin Franklin; Watson and Crick; Jan Ingenhousz; Photosynthesis; The beauty of nature; Having an artistic and a scientific mind; The current state of “Science”...
And MUCH more!
