Rosaleen Norton: The Witch of Kings Cross

Winter solstice is less than a month away, and what better way to celebrate our mid-season break than with a tale of a witch: one of the earliest symbols of feminism.

Today, hear the story of Sydney artist, counterculturist and occultist Rosaleen Norton.

Norton defied the norms of 1950s Australia to create revolutionary art and push others to expand their views of the world.

In this episode, you’ll learn about Norton’s unusual upbringing, how she used trances and sex magic to commune with higher beings and astral project, the meaning behind her distinctive artworks, and how she came to be known as the witch of Kings Cross.

Enjoy.

Bea Arthur: Golden Girl

In Hollywood, if you’re a woman older than 55, you’re practically invisible.

It’s a symptom of a broader societal problem, but in 1985, a show debuted starring three women, all over the age of 60.

The Golden Girls became a roaring success and helped redefine the role of older women in Hollywood. While Bea Arthur’s career hit new heights with the series, her love of storytelling and theatre began much earlier.

In this episode you’ll learn about Bea’s fight for success, how she discovered her trademark sense of humour and how her legacy lives on today.

Listen in.

Anastasia Romanov: Journey to the past

Ever scared you’re the less hot sibling?

We don’t have that problem, but we can sympathise because even though we’re stunning specimens, we do still have hearts.

However, Anastasia Romanov, Russian princess, did.

Poor dear was described as “less ethereal” than her sisters.

But that didn’t stop her from going on to become one of the most famous conspiracies of all time.

It’s the question that has haunted the world for more than one hundred years: did Princess Anastasia survive the Russian Revolution?

In this episode, find out about Anastasia’s upbringing, why (the fictional) Dimitri is the sexiest animated character ever, and about the mysterious Anna Anderson who may or may have not been the princess herself.

Until then, dasvidaniya.

P.S. Brief content warning on this one, the Romanov family did not have a pretty end.

Elizabeth Báthory: Countess Dracula

Yeah, you read that correctly.

This week's Fierce Female (or should we say, FEROCIOUS Female) liked to get her hands dirty... with human blood.

This week we tell the story of the Blood Countess herself, Elizabeth Báthory of Hungary. A powerful woman with a sadistic streak.

Our Liz Báthory has been named the most prolific female murderer in history, and let's just say her killings make living with the Lannister's seem like a walk in the park.

So come back in time with us to the 1500's to hear the horrifying true story of this sadistic, female killer.

WARNING: make sure you've had your lunch first!

Florence Violet Mckenzie: Radio revolutionary

Florence Violet McKenzie: Radio revolutionary

Sometimes in life you’re going to encounter some people who are just clowns. And not just clowns, but dumb clowns.

Often, ladies, these will be men, as our girl Florence Violet McKenzie would tell you.

She navigated an industry that was -at the time - nearly defined by these gentlemen’s breathtaking stupidity and ended up transforming it into the radio and electrical engineering sector it is today.

In this episode you’ll hear about how Violet took on a male-dominated industry and made it her own, how she supported the war effort in a major way, taught an entire generation of aviators to radio and kept a sunny disposition even while facing some pretty classic misogyny.

And you’ll hear about Talissa’s deep-seated hatred for hiking.

Tune in. Let the sparks fly.

Pancho Barnes: Having a good time

What do you get if you combine Jay Gatsby, Amelia Earhart, Sancho Panza, Indiana Jones, Lady Godiva and (maybe) a dash of Hugh Hefner?

Someone starting to resemble the whirlwind of a human being that was Pancho Barnes.

In this episode, we hear all about the legendary flyer who beat Earhart’s speed record, launched a pilot’s union, burnt through multiple inheritances and just generally had a good-ass time.

You’ll hear about Pancho’s terrifying start in flying, where she picked up her name and how she built what sounds like one of the coolest places ever: the Happy Bottom Riding Club.

We’re ready for take off. Strap in, babies.

Helen Reddy: Hear her roar

Helen Reddy: Hear me roar

Fair warning on this one, you may have Helen Reddy’s hit song ‘I Am Woman’ stuck in your head for days after listening.

Although in terms of songs to have stuck in your head, you could do worse.

In this episode, you’ll hear about Helen’s troubled rise to fame, her journey as a single mum, her time in parks and recreation (oh yeah) and the life that led her to write one of the defining feminist anthem.

Ohhh yes, we are women, hear us roar.

Princess Sophia Duleep Singh: Suffragette socialite

Who’s been watching Bridgerton? We’ve been obsessed, mainly with the Duke of Hastings.

So we like handsome men, sue us.

Anyway, we’re not here to talk about Regé-Jean Page - although there’s probably a whole episode in that. No, we’re here to talk about Princess Sophia Duleep Singh - the incomparable of her social seasons.

But so, so, so much more. Princess Sophia Duleep Singh was a socialite, suffragette and a perennial thorn in the tax man’s side.

Yeah girl, don’t pay those taxes.

In this episode, you’ll hear about how Sophia navigated her way through the English social scene to obtain her goals, fought to preserve her culture, trained championship dogs (yep) and campaigned for women’s rights.

She’s the coolest. Listen now.

Seondeok of Silla: Supernatural Korean Queen

How would you feel if you lived a nice life but then historians hundreds of years later questioned whether you even existed?

You’d be dead, but we imagine you’d still be fairly pissed off.

That’s what happened to Queen Seondeok of Silla’s sister. Luckily for Seondeok, she did more than enough to have her name etched in the annals of Korean history.

In this episode you’ll learn about how Seondeok led a cultural revolution through Silla, set hearts ablaze - literally, used frogs to sniff out enemy armies and generally just did the most during her time on earth.

She’s a lot, and we love her for it.

Seondeok of Silla, we’re coming for you.

Margaret Sanger: Controversial birth control advocate

What exactly is a fierce female? It’s something we’ve been discussing a lot among ourselves recently.

Is it someone who only does good? Someone who is monumentally brave? A woman ahead of her time?

Or is she someone like Margaret Sanger, who revolutionised the birth control movement in America but was also a supporter of deeply disturbing beliefs.

In this episode, we look at a woman who achieved great things, but who also advocated for terrible things.

You’ll hear about how Margaret began fighting for women’s reproductive rights, how she opened the first birth control clinic in the USA, how she campaigned as a eugenicist, and the legacy she leaves today.

Virginia Hall: World’s greatest spy

Ever thrown out milk from the fridge even though it’s only a day old? Decided not to go to a party because you just had a suspicion it would be boring as all hell?

Don’t feel bad, it’s likely you share the same motto as one of the most powerful spies in history, Virginia Hall.

Dubito ergo sum: I doubt, therefore I survive.

This episode, we slink our way into the story of Virginia Hall, WWII spy, mountain climber, snake charmer and teeth filer.

You’ll find out about Virginia’s life changing run in with an errant bullet in Turkey, her determination to become an international woman of mystery, how she became the most decorated civilian of the second world war and how her modus operandi lives on to this day.

Oh and also, how she outsmarted the famous Nazi known as The Butcher of Lyon.

Et cetera.

That’s a lot of Latin for one blurb, so before we get too carried away, let’s get into it.

Diana Spencer: The People’s Princess

Diana Spencer

You might not think you have much in common with a princess of the English monarchy, but if you’ve ever had a guinea pig AND you’ve trained that guinea pig to do tricks, you would be wrong.

And if your wedding was televised and watched by millions of people around the world.... actually, sorry, that’s not relatable at all, Diana.

In our first episode of 2021, we are heading to the 1980s to meet a little lady you might know as Princess Di. In this episode you will hear about the unusual start to her relationship with Charles, how she rebelled within the confines of The Firm and proved a powerful advocate for human rights, and the events leading up to that fateful night in Paris.

So fish out your gloves, pop on your pearls and practice your elocution. We’re visiting Buckingham Palace, baby.

Amanirenas: Warrior Queen who defeated Rome

Queen Amanirenas

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of the week and we are FREAKING PSYCHED.

It’s nearly the holidays, we can taste the mimosas (or eggnog for those up north) and we have a festive treat for you: another podcast.

This week we’re diving into the story of Queen Amanirenas, the woman who took on the Roman empire and won.

Yep - you read that right. The Roman empire thought they could beat the Queen of Kush, turn her people into slaves and take over her kingdom - modern Sudan.

Lol, they were so wrong.

In this episode, you’ll hear about the long line of Kandices of Kush, how Amanirenas lost an eye, what she used to cover it up, her legendary hands and the mysterious hieroglyphics that remain an enigma to this day.

Happy holidays ladies. Let’s go crush some centurions.

This is also the last episode for the season - but don’t worry we will be back in the new year with some incredible Fierce Females AND some other exciting stuff as well!

Irena Sendler: Warsaw Rescuer

Irena Sendler: Warsaw Rescuer

It’s fair to say WWII and the Holocaust is one of the darkest eras in global history. But, as so often happens, the worst times can also bring out the best in some.

Take Irena Sendler, for example.

A social worker, Sendler was also a bona fide rescuer, carrying out 2,500 Jewish people from inside the increasingly desperate Warsaw ghetto.

In this episode, you’ll hear about how Irena smuggled the children out in inventive ways, how she evaded execution at the hands of the Nazis, and her thoughts on heroism.

She saved 2,500 people and thought it was normal.

Have a listen and ask yourself, how do you define a hero?

Grace O’Malley: Swashbuckling wonder

Have you ever taken a shipwrecked sailor as your beautiful, Irish lover?

We haven’t, but boy would we like to.

That’s just one of the many awe-inspiring things Grace O’Malley, or Gráinne Ní Mháille, did in her staggeringly cinematic life.

Born in 1530s Ireland, Gráinne defied gender norms to establish a pirate empire, defy the English and take on Queen Elizabeth - with a dagger in her skirt, no less.

So find your windswept sailor, climb your ship’s mast and breathe in the fresh sea air.

Then hit play: we’re going on an adventure.

Oprah Winfrey: Powerhouse

Oprah Winfrey: Powerhouse

We don’t know about you, but sometimes we just want to be Oprah Winfrey, pottering around her garden in a loose white linen dress and oversized hat, picking avocados.

While that’s a pretty difficult dream to make a reality, we can get closer to becoming Oprah by knowing her story.

In this episode, we dive into the back story of one of television’s biggest stars.

You’ll hear about Oprah’s troubled childhood, her battles with trauma, how she got her start in television and her relentless push to help other women around her.

Oprah Winfrey was once described as a “four course meal”, and in a world of snacks, we have no choice but to simply salute this goddamn queen.

****Warning: This episode includes content which may be distressing for rape and child sexual assault survivors****

Fierce Females of History
Frida Kahlo: Painter, Icon, Revolutionary

Frida Kahlo: Painter, Icon, Revolutionary

We want to level with you. It’s a Wednesday (or Tuesday maybe, depending on the time zone), it’s November, we’re nearly at the party season but not quite there. And we can’t lie: we’re ready for some tequila, some tacos, some beautiful bright clothes and some Mariachi music. We’re ready for a break.

Aren’t you?

But in lieu of a holiday, let’s travel in our minds.

This episode, we’re going back to 1900s Mexico to visit a woman with dreams in her mind, flowers in her hair and passion in her soul.

We’re talking about the one… the only… Frida Kahlo.

In this episode, you’ll hear about the heartbreakingly beautiful inspiration behind her iconic paintings, her rollercoaster love story with Diego Rivera and the gold glitter dust bus accident that started it all.

It’s big, it’s colourful, it’s amazing.

¡Escúchanos! It’s time to listen in.

We also mention the Share the Dignity 'It's in the Bag' campaign (AUS)
