The Red Dress project, created and developed by this week’s guest, Kirstie Macleod, can, at first, look like little more than a beautiful dress, embellished by a lot of colorful embroidery. If you spend more than 30 sec. exploring this project, you will quickly discover that the dress is a powerful symbol of what people of all kinds and from many cultures have experienced in their lives, many of those experiences worse than you can imagine. This week we travel to the world of Haute Couture in a conversation with couture historian Robert Ossant and embroidery artist and interior designer Jessica Jane Pile. They have combined their vast knowledge, experience, and talents to write an upcoming book, “The Art of Couture,” available Nov. 2025. You can pre-order it now from the usual book sources. It’s a unique publication that provides an excellent history of several famous and upcoming design houses, combined with stitching instructions that will enable you to implement couture designs and techniques in your own needlework. Alissa Cook takes embroidery to a new level by combining it with beautiful nature photography to create truly unique needle art. Hannah Arnold creates new embroidery designs in a beautiful building her husband built entirely of reclaimed materials. One way the needlework world will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary is the America’s Tapestry project. This week we talk to Stefan Romero, creator and driving force behind the project. America’s Tapestry involves original art that tells mostly unknown stories about how people in the 13 colonies contributed to the Revolutionary War effort. The art will be stitched by local EGA Guilds and other groups of stitchers in the 13 states. In our conversation with Stefan, we learn how the project came to be, what’s involved in creating these pieces of needle art, and how stitchers from across the country can participate. At about the 50-min. mark, Stephan describes the 13 panels and the stories they tell. For audio listeners, there is a slide show of the 13 panels on the page for this podcast.
