Building Beyond: The Burden

Welcome back to another episode of Extra Mayo with Pastor Josh Mayo!

This week, we have started a new series. Join us as we dive into Nehemiah and Building Beyond.

Every great move of God starts somewhere — not in a boardroom, but in a burden.
Sometimes before God builds anything around you, He breaks something open inside you.
In Building Beyond: The Burden, Pastor Josh walks through Nehemiah 1–2 and shows how God stirred Nehemiah’s heart before He strengthened his hands.
When Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem’s walls were broken and its people disgraced, he didn’t ignore it—he sat down, wept, and prayed.
Because when the vision is from God, it’s always bigger than we are.

Main Idea:

What moves God’s heart should move ours.

Practical Life Applications:

  • -Let the weight you feel drive you to prayer, not paralysis.

  • -Stop trying to escape what breaks your heart—ask God to shape it into calling.

  • -Distinguish between anxiety (pressure you carry alone) and assignment (burden God carries with you).

  • -Allow God to disturb your comfort zones; He may be preparing you for kingdom impact.

  • -Remember: before God rebuilds walls, He rebuilds hearts.

    Key Takeaways:

  • -Don’t rush the burden—let it do its holy work.
-Sometimes the heaviness you feel isn’t punishment; it’s preparation.
-God turns tears into tools and sorrow into strategy.
-You carry the heart of a builder—build with your tears, pray with your passion, and trust that God’s not finished yet.

    Passages Mentioned:
    Nehemiah 1–2 | Psalm 126:5–6

Psalms 23: Home in Every Line

Welcome back to another episode of Extra Mayo with Pastor Josh Mayo.
Over the last several weeks, we’ve walked verse by verse through Psalm 23—seeing the Shepherd’s care, His guidance, His protection, and His presence.
In this final conversation, Josh reminds us that Psalm 23 isn’t just poetry; it’s a pathway. Every line shows how God turns fear into fellowship, chaos into calm, and distance into dwelling.
    The big idea: Home isn’t a place—it’s a Person.

Verse 1 — “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”

    • The verse of sufficiency: belonging produces contentment.

    • David’s “my Shepherd” reveals intimacy, not abstraction.

    • When the Shepherd is your source, scarcity loses its grip.

    • Quote: Corrie ten Boom — “You may never know that Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.”

Verse 2 — “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters.”

    • Rest isn’t a reward—it’s a requirement for renewal.

    • God’s leadership restores rhythm, not rush.

    • Quote: A. W. Tozer — “The man who comes to God must first stop running.”

Verse 3 — “He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”

    • God restores before He redirects.

    • Righteous paths are about proximity, not perfection.

    • Quote: Oswald Chambers — “The best measure of a spiritual life is not its ecstasy but its obedience.”

Verse 4 — “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

    • Valleys make theology turn into intimacy.

    • God’s rod and staff reveal that He’s both strong and near.

    • Quote: C. S. Lewis — “God shouts in our pain; it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

Verse 5 — “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”

    • God provides, heals, and overflows in the middle of the battle.

    • Anointing isn’t just about a moment—it’s about a mission.

    • Quote: Tim Keller — “When the Bible talks about anointing, it’s never just about a moment; it’s about a mission.”

Verse 6 — “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

    • God’s goodness pursues, His mercy sustains, His presence welcomes us home.

    • Eternal dwelling begins now, not someday.

    • Quote: Frederick Buechner — “The party is going on, and you are invited.”

    • Belonging to the Shepherd brings peace that possessions can’t.

    • Follow His rhythm of rest and renewal instead of constant striving.

    • Let restoration precede direction—healing before hustle.

    • In the valley, talk to God, not about Him.

    • Receive His anointing as a call to overflow into others.

    • Live each day as one already dwelling in the house of the Lord.

    Psalm 23 isn’t just a comfort for death—it’s a guide for living.
The Shepherd provides, leads, restores, protects, anoints, and welcomes.
When the Lord is your Shepherd, you don’t have to chase peace—you just have to stay close to it.

    Passages Mentioned:Psalm 23 | Romans 12:2 | Isaiah 10:27 | Luke 4:18 | John 10:11 | Revelation 7:17

    Psalms 23: Chased Back Home

Welcome back to another episode of Extra Mayo with Pastor Josh Mayo!

In the finale of our Psalm 23 series, Pastor Josh Mayo unpacks the closing verse, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” This episode explores the relentless love of the Shepherd who doesn’t just lead us — He chases us, forms us, and ultimately brings us home. From bold faith in uncertain seasons to the beauty of dwelling in His presence, “Chased Back Home” reminds us that God’s pursuit ends in belonging.

    Bottom Line:

The Shepherd doesn’t just lead you — He chases you with goodness and mercy until you find home in His presence.

    Key Takeaways:

-When Life Feels Unsure, Faith Says “Surely”: Faith speaks confidence even when feelings waver — because God is steady when life is not.

-Goodness and Mercy Are the Essence of God: Creation and covenant meet in His character; He’s not just good — He is goodness itself.

-God’s Mercy Doesn’t Trail — It Chases: Grace pursues what fear once hunted. You’re being chased by redemption, not regret.

-Leave a Residue of Mercy: Those caught by grace should leave evidence of it — peace, kindness, and blessing wherever they go.

-Don’t Just Visit His Presence — Dwell There: Dwelling transforms; where you stay determines what shapes you.

-The Shepherd Became the Groom: Jesus left the Father’s house to prepare your eternal home — love is the destination of every step He’s led you through.

    Scriptures Mentioned:

    Psalm 23:6 | John 1:14 | John 14:1–3 | Revelation 21:3

    Featured Quotes:

-“Faith is not the absence of doubt; it’s the presence of trust in spite of it.” — Frederick Buechner

-“The mercy of God became visible when God became man.” — Augustine

-“Grace is the hound of heaven — it will not let you go.” — Francis Thompson

-“Those who are grasped by grace become its evidence to the world.” — N. T. Wright

-“The only real proof of having been touched by divine mercy is the mercy we extend to others.” — Henri Nouwen

-“He left His Father’s house to seek a bride, and returns to take her home.” — C. H. Spurgeon

    Psalms 23: Overflowing Annointing

Welcome Back to another episode of Extra Mayo.

    We're diving into Psalms 23:5

Pastor Cornelius teaches that God’s anointing—like a shepherd’s oil on his sheep—brings healing, protection, and peace amid life’s irritations and distractions. The “flies” of anxiety, shame, and negativity may not disappear, but God equips us to endure them through His presence and renewal of our minds. The anointing isn’t just a moment; it’s our identity—God’s declaration that we are chosen, covered, and cared for. And when He fills our cup, He doesn’t stop at enough—He pours until it overflows with His abundance, peace, and love.https://www.youtube.com/@ExtraMayoPod

    Psalms 23: Preparing A Place

In this episode, Pastor Josh Mayo unpacks Psalm 23:5—“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies”—and explores how God’s provision, protection, and grace show up in the most challenging places. From mountains of surrender to the victory of feasting under His protection, Josh shows how the Shepherd invites us to trust, rest, and dine in the midst of life’s pressures.

Bottom Line: Don’t run from enemies—sit where the Shepherd sets the table.

God prepares, protects, and provides in the very places we fear, turning tension into transformation.

    Key Takeaways:

  • -The Table on the Mountain: Provision comes in the high places of surrender, where dependence on God grows.

  • -The Predator and the Poison: God clears dangers and deceptions before we even arrive, guarding our souls.

  • -The Table as a Training Ground: Growth happens under pressure; sitting at His table is a posture of trust and belonging.

  • - Tables We Avoid: Forgiveness, silence, and tension are God’s opportunities for transformation if we stay seated.

  • - The Victory Feast: True victory is peace, grace, and worship in the presence of what tried to destroy us.

  • Scriptures Mentioned:

  • Psalm 23:5 | Psalm 124 | 2 Samuel 9

Welcome back to another episode of Extra Mayo with Pastor Josh Mayo!

This week we’re unpacking Psalm 23:4 — “Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

-The rod: God’s power, protection, and loving correction.

-The staff: His guidance, intimacy, and rescue.

-Justice + mercy: the Shepherd’s strength and tenderness working together.

-Why discipline isn’t rejection—it’s proof you belong to Him.

-Rest in the security of God’s strength to defend you.
