Welcome back to another episode of Extra Mayo with Pastor Josh Mayo.
Over the last several weeks, we’ve walked verse by verse through Psalm 23—seeing the Shepherd’s care, His guidance, His protection, and His presence.
In this final conversation, Josh reminds us that Psalm 23 isn’t just poetry; it’s a pathway. Every line shows how God turns fear into fellowship, chaos into calm, and distance into dwelling.
The big idea: Home isn’t a place—it’s a Person.
Verse 1 — “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”
The verse of sufficiency: belonging produces contentment.
David’s “my Shepherd” reveals intimacy, not abstraction.
When the Shepherd is your source, scarcity loses its grip.
Quote: Corrie ten Boom — “You may never know that Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.”
Verse 2 — “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters.”
Rest isn’t a reward—it’s a requirement for renewal.
God’s leadership restores rhythm, not rush.
Quote: A. W. Tozer — “The man who comes to God must first stop running.”
Verse 3 — “He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”
God restores before He redirects.
Righteous paths are about proximity, not perfection.
Quote: Oswald Chambers — “The best measure of a spiritual life is not its ecstasy but its obedience.”
Verse 4 — “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
Valleys make theology turn into intimacy.
God’s rod and staff reveal that He’s both strong and near.
Quote: C. S. Lewis — “God shouts in our pain; it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
Verse 5 — “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
God provides, heals, and overflows in the middle of the battle.
Anointing isn’t just about a moment—it’s about a mission.
Quote: Tim Keller — “When the Bible talks about anointing, it’s never just about a moment; it’s about a mission.”
Verse 6 — “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
God’s goodness pursues, His mercy sustains, His presence welcomes us home.
Eternal dwelling begins now, not someday.
Quote: Frederick Buechner — “The party is going on, and you are invited.”
Belonging to the Shepherd brings peace that possessions can’t.
Follow His rhythm of rest and renewal instead of constant striving.
Let restoration precede direction—healing before hustle.
In the valley, talk to God, not about Him.
Receive His anointing as a call to overflow into others.
Live each day as one already dwelling in the house of the Lord.
Psalm 23 isn’t just a comfort for death—it’s a guide for living.
The Shepherd provides, leads, restores, protects, anoints, and welcomes.
When the Lord is your Shepherd, you don’t have to chase peace—you just have to stay close to it.
