In this episode, we delve into the world of people pleasing. What does it mean to be a people pleaser, and why is it viewed negatively? We explore the definition of a people pleaser – someone who prioritizes others' needs over their own, often struggling to advocate for themselves. Join us in a convo about the thin line between being agreeable and the potential pitfalls of people pleasing in the workplace.

Hosts Taylor and Tori share personal experiences and tactical strategies to break free from the people-pleasing cycle. They discuss the likability bias that women face, how it affects their careers, and the high risk of burnout associated with constant people pleasing. Harvard-trained clinical psychologist Debbie Sorensen weighs in on the mental health implications.

Taylor suggests simple yet powerful tactics like replacing excessive apologies with gratitude and not responding immediately to every request. Tori provides insights into finding reasons to say no and effectively communicating your priorities.

Drawing from Forbes articles, the hosts explore key themes such as increasing awareness, understanding boundaries, seeking mentorship, setting measurable goals, and embracing clear communication. Whether you're navigating a corporate landscape or any professional setting, this episode offers actionable advice to assert yourself, set boundaries, and ultimately prioritize your well-being. Tune in to discover how saying no can be a powerful tool for personal and professional growth.

Corporate Sellouts
EP 25: Why women work more and get paid less
In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into the persistent issue of the gender pay gap and its connection to parenthood. We begin by exploring eye-opening statistics that reveal how little progress has been made in closing the pay gap over the past two decades. Despite women earning an average of 82% of what men earned in 2022, similar to the gap in 2002, the nuances reveal stark disparities. Black women earned 70% as much as white men, Hispanic women only earned 65%, and Asian women earned 93%. We investigate the underlying factors contributing to this inequality, ranging from underrepresentation of women in managerial and STEM occupations to their higher prevalence in lower-paying fields. Moreover, the impact of COVID-19 on the pay gap is discussed, highlighting how many women left the workforce to fulfill caregiving responsibilities. A significant revelation emerges as we uncover the "parental premium" for men. Surprisingly, men with children typically earn more than women, regardless of parental status, or men without children. We explore the reasons behind this disparity, including biases surrounding engagement in the workforce and societal expectations placed on mothers. Drawing inspiration from case studies, we explore solutions to narrow the pay gap. The Icelandic approach of mandating equal parental leave for men and women demonstrates how cultural shifts can lead to positive change. We examine the impact of a decreased male population during the civil war/genocide in Rwanda, which prompted women to enter traditionally male-dominated roles. We examine key themes and statistics, such as the resistance from remote employees, potential reasons driving the return-to-work movement, and the impact on productivity and employee engagement. Join us as we discuss who benefits from this shift and whether companies offering remote work as an option will gain a competitive edge.

  • Reasons why companies are mandating back to office

  • Which work setup (remote/hybrid/in-office) is the most effective?

  • Will companies who offer remote work as an option be more competitive?
