Afton is BACK to fill us in on all the boundary-setting she's been doing in the 6 months since we heard from her last.
I first interviewed Afton back on episode 8 to talk about compassion fatigue, setting boundaries, and the current state of the industry. Since Afton is one of my closest friends her interview is never complete without some laughs and giggles, but between the laughable commentary Afton shares some real lessons she has had this year on setting boundaries and creating a better work-life balance for herself.

Throwing it back for this week's episode, getting the client's perspective from the other side of the chair. The topic? What clients think about the cost of services, what they're willing to pay for, and what they're not willing to pay for.

We all know the beauty industry is always changing, and that’s part of what we love about it, right? But it can get so confusing with new business concepts going viral on social media left and right. From topics like prebooking to working your dream schedule to making 6 figures right away, it gets harder and harder to know what is realistic and what is just click bait.
On this weeks episode I sit down with Michelle, the business coach better known as @beautybusinessguide on Instagram, to talk about our views on these topics vs the tried and true business methods. Whether you’ve been a hairstylist for 25 years or 5 minutes, this one is for you.
You can find more about Michelle's business coaching information by following her on instagram @beautybusinessguide, reading her posts, and clicking the link in her bio.

Social media classes for beauty professionals can be found everywhere, but they're not always directed towards the "baby stylists" - which leaves a lot of questions unanswered, like how to post any content at all when you don't even have clients. To answer my questions for the newer stylists joining our industry I knew the best person for the job would be Sydney Lopez.
Sydney is not only an insanely talented stylist, colorist, and educator - but she's also an incredibly knowledgeable social coach. With over 174k followers on her instagram alone, she has built an amazing following and is passionate about sharing her knowledge with the world.
Be sure to listen to hear all the nuggets of advice she gives out, whether or not she feels any cooler with all those followers, and some very big takeaways on how to build up content for social no matter where you're at in your career.

Together with Meg Gilbert/@mermeghair we discuss body image in the beauty industry and how it effects stylists of all sizes, especially those in larger sized bodies. Meg and I bare our souls as we share comments that have been made from coworkers and clients, embracing our bodies, and how being fat is Meg's superpower.
Together, we remind you that no matter your size, no matter what you ate today, and no matter what you're wearing - it does not define your worth as a human or your talent as a stylist.

Anxiety. ADHD. Burnout. Introvert. Sobriety. Hairstylist.
Sam identifies with all of these things. So how does she make it work?
Well, for starters, she is not alone. In an industry thats known for being comprised of "misfits," chances are most of us identify with at least one of these things (if not all of them). While Sam's story may not be entirely unique, she hopes that sharing it anyway can help anyone who might be struggling and understand that their love of their career and their mental health don't have to compete with one another.
Listen to the full episode to hear the different ways both Sam and I deal with our various issues that seem to go against the very social industry we have chosen.

5 years ago Lauren set out to have one simple thing: purple hair.
What followed this pursuit has been 5 years of multiple stylists, disappointment, breakage, and hours and hours in the salon chair - without ever having her goals achieved. Even after all her unfortunate mishaps with her hair she is still marching forward to get the purple she has been dreaming about and will stop at nothing (even hopping on a plane) to get it.
On this episode she shares her entire story of how she got to this place and offers her personal opinion on the transparency that stylists need to have with their clients - especially when it comes to vivids.

As stylists we know how important the stylist-client relationship is and we all have different versions of what that means to us. Just like any relationship we may wonder if they like us back, if they think of us when they're away, and some of us want to keep it strictly professional.
Whatever your vibe is, it's time to break down that wall and hear what clients think about us. On this episode I interview Haley, who reminds us all how special the stylist-client bond can be and how it goes so much deeper than hair. If you need a reminder about why we do what we do or are in the mood to feel warm and fuzzy inside, sit down - pull up a chair - and join us for coffee and foils.

Do you ever wonder what goes through your client's head as they reach for the box dye and mess up all your hard work? Do you wish you could get inside their head to make them change their mind? On this episode I talk with Kyle, a client who has a fantastic relationship with her stylist but still found herself wandering down the color aisle at target. Listen to the episode to hear her reasoning behind it and her journey to get her color back to normal.

Have you ever had a client with a vision so specific you kind of wondered what brought them to that point? On this episode I explore that topic with my guest Kristen, who is a client that knows what she likes and knows what she wants. As a brand stylist and creative director she understands what she wants to see visually and has cultivated her own way of making sure her hair goals are achieved.
More about Kristen Poissant:
Taken from kristenpoissant.com:
"Kristen is the Creative Director behind Kristen Poissant Studio LTD. and resides in Astoria, NY with her Corgi and Design Assistant Olive. She has 13+ years of experience working in the stationery & gift industry designing for a number of different multi-million dollar brands such as Vera Bradley, Tiny Prints and Shutterfly.
However, today her passion lies with spirited small businesses who have creative ideas and big goals! She values the power of branding and believes that a strong intentional visual strategy is what truly set you apart from your competition. Kristen's goal is to support you in building a business you are confident with and excited to share with your community and followers."

This pandemic has rocked everyone's world - theres no doubt about it. And for those of us in this industry we have seen clients come and clients go, especially in these last two years. But when was the last time you slowed down and considered that even though we have had clients stick with us through these crazy times, how have their own priorities changed?
Joining me on this episode is Meg - a former luxury retail manager turned stay-at-home-mom. With her title change has come a big shift in her priorities and with that, less trips to the salon. Listen to the full episode to hear her point of view on why her salon visits have changed, what they look like now, and how self-care is still important but looks a little different these days.

Unless you've been living under a rock, everyone in the beauty industry has seen the heated conversations on social media about salon policies (like cancellation policies). The convo is often about whether or not we have the right to charge clients for things like lateness, last minute cancellations, color adjustments, and no-shows.
With those policies in mind, I interviewed Sarah to get insight on the client's perspective on this topic. We discuss the most common policies in different salons and she shares her opinion on how it feels to be a client who may get charged for these offenses and whether or not we should also be held accountable when we, as stylists, commit the same offense.
