In this episode, the three of us discuss our time playing baseball at the high school level. We all played on the same team our junior and senior year so that's where most of our memories come from. I'm going to label this as part one with the intention of doing more episodes either expanding on memories or recalling others we thought we forgot. Either way, thank you so much for listening!
In this episode, we are joined by our good friend Spencer Fuller who we grew up in Ottumwa with. After just one episode, we've decided to have him on full time and are excited to share the surplus of stories we have together. At one point in time, we all worked Menards which is a home improvement store in the midwest. There were lots of fun times working together and some things we didn't quite like. In this episode, we discuss the different hobbies we enjoy doing as well as going off on a tangent about apple products. Both being runners, we tend to talk about our Apple Watches often which we end up doing in this one.
In this episode, we decided to dive into a topic that we both enjoy. We run somewhat frequently but have a goal of running marathons together. Maybe speaking this into the mic will speak it into existence or maybe we'll have people listening that can remind us of this dream we both have. In the final episode of our book talk, we discuss chapter 8 "Play Until the Whistle" and chapter 9 "Wringing Out the Soul" as well as the finale of Never Finished. This was our first attempt at reviewing a book and very much enjoyed this journey. We plan to discuss more books but will take a break for a couple of weeks.
We started this episode with the intentions of making a pros and cons list of the town we grew up in. It turns out, we really just wanted to revisit the memories we made while living there. It was a great town to grow up in and we didn't know any better.
In this episode, we get the chance to focus on chapter 7 titled "The Reckoning". With only one chapter to discuss, we get the entire 45 minutes to reminisce David's experience running the MOAB 240. Yes, it's a 240 mile race over the course of a couple of days. There are some gruesome injuries David must push through in order to just finish the race. He finishes in 2nd place. This is a testament to just how far the body can take you if you convince your mind to do so.
With just under five episodes in, we thought it would be a great idea to explain how we got here. What our journey up to starting the podcast looked like.
In this episode, we discuss chapters 5 and 6. Chapter 5 titled "Disciple of Discipline" is where David recalls the past when he learned his incredible ability of having discipline. When he and his mother escaped the grasp of his abusive father, they landed in the household of his grandfather who went by the name of Sergeant Jack. Through only his actions, Sergeant Jack taught David how to be disciplined and that if you were going to complete a task, you better do it right the first time. Chapter 6 named "The Art of Getting Hit in the Mouth" is where David lays out a roadmap on how to deal with hard times in your life. We aren't taught what to do when everything fails and we're back to square one. He then explains that we need people in our "fox hole", people who are going to support us but push us on the days we don't want to do anything. This book keeps getting better and better.
This is our first episode where we talk about really anything that comes to mind. These are super informal and will most definitely capture our more authentic self as there is absolutely no script on what we'll say. In this episode, we discuss chapter 3, The Mental Lab, and chapter 4, A Savage Reborn. Within these chapters, there are podcast's that David Goggins and Adam Skolnick step aside from the book to go more in depth. Podcast 8 imbedded within these chapters is where David and his mother, Jackie Goggins, discuss their time and the similarities that they both experienced when living with David's father. This has been our favorite chapters so far as we were able to get a deep dive into the horrible times they lived through together.
This is the start of our podcast named "Close Friends, Distant Talks". My name is Colby Wagner, the guy on the top right. Spencer Nelson is on the bottom left. I'm sure we'll go more in depth on a podcast of how we became friends so I won't explain that here. We live states away but talk very frequently and decided to capture it. This first episode is a trail but it's taught us how we'd like to have our podcast continue. We did not expect this to be 45 plus minutes or even talk about anything other than the book. Our only goal is to capture our time together. The hope is for the conversation to flow easily and have a good time. We hope you enjoy!
