2023 Year in Crypto
Mark referenced the 25 December 2023 article published by The Block titled “From SBF to Taylor Swift, BlackRock, CZ and Binance: The top crypto stories of 2023” with some notable takeaways:
USDC Stablecoin
The key issue related to the failure of Silicon Valley Bank and the exposure that the fintech giant, Circle, had to the bank resulting in massive sell-off of its stablecoin, USDC and a 15% drop in the coin’s market cap within a 24-hour period.
Taylor Swift and FTX
Unlike notable football hall of famer, Tom Brady, and NBA great, Shaquille O’Neal, Taylor Swift did not sign on to promote FTX. It seems that Swift-enomics kicked in and some due diligence was performed prior to the decision, unlike other celebrity influence
BlackRock and Bitcoin ETF
In June of 2023, BlackRock filed a registration with the SEC for its spot bitcoin ETF, known as the iShares Bitcoin Trust. Other notable investment firms, including Franklin Templeton, VanEck and Fidelity, are reportedly also seeking approval for a spot bitcoin ETF
Binance and Changpeng Zhao (“CZ”)
Binance and the US Department of Justice settled for $4.3 billion after the DOJ commenced a criminal investigation alleging money laundering and sanctions violations. As part of the plea deal, CZ agreed to step down as CEO of Binance and pay a $50 million fine after pleading guilty to violations of the Bank Secrecy Act.

Celsius bankruptcy
Celsius actually declared bankruptcy in July 2022 but continued to form part of the 2023 crypto narrative alongside other notable bankruptcies such as Three Arrows Capital and Genesis (founded by Barry Silbert).
We discussed the back story to Celsius and the founder of Celsius, Alex Mashinsky and a spring 2018 conference with Alex on stage with anti-crypto influencer, Nouriel Roubini (or “Dr. Doom” ) and Bill Barhydt (founder of Abra Global). Alex rebutted Nouriel’s claims of "99% of crypto land is one shitcoin traded for another shitcoin…"

In the first episode of “Soul Food” with personal trainer, fitness instructor and life coach, Ange Helie, we took a deep dive into understanding why she is referred to as the “Anti-Diet” individual. Now, in order to avoid calling out her mother for arriving at such a distinguished title, I asked Ange to provide some clarity since there are so many diet solutions available on the market.
Selected highlights:
[2:22]...there is this external pressure…because by doing so, this will equal weight loss
[2:30]...we are getting ads for diet products, meal plans, templates or calculations you need to follow to lose weight
[5:10]...when we see these beautiful [people] on social media…we are told “...do this calorie plan so you can get this body…”
[5:32]...on top of the physical, it's the mental exhaustion of trying to follow this plan
[6:35]...every single woman I work with comes to me saying: “...I am doing all the things, I’m taking the magic supplements, I am watching my sugar…but I am not seeing any results…”
[9:24]...you just start fearing food
[13:59]...I am really curious on the emotional state and whether you are really in tune [with the fact] that you are eating?
[32:51]...we make these into giant statements where “butter = weight gain” – for sure, if you are going to eat a whole block of butter
[37:31]...you know when you are feeling healthy; you know when you are feeling good…

This is the 14th episode in the “Errol’s Eye On” series dedicated to Errol Vas providing practical marketing and business advice to startups, small to medium-sized enterprises and large multi-national corporations.
In this episode, Errol decided to focus on the marketing strategy of two watch manufacturers from the 1960’s
Brand 1 | Saxony Dive Watch – Swiss manufactured; NY-based 1968 start; spent $1 million on advertising (in 1968!!); equivalent to $8 million in 2023 dollars. In 1970, introduction of the Quartz brand of watches pretty much decimated the company.
Brand 2 | Vostok – Russian watch brand; no advertising, In the late 1950’s and 60s, the Russian Ministry of Defence mandated the production of Russian-made watches for Russian divers. Made out of steel; had to be submersible to up to 200 metres of water.

As promised during our chat, Errol provided the following links:

In the first episode of 2023, I shared a Zoom call with Ange Helie, a native of Banff, Alberta and the founder of AfterGlow, a lifestyle coaching business she has spent the better part of 15 years getting established. Her concerted efforts lead to recently opening a studio on Banff Avenue, which most folks associate with a street level view of Cascade Mountain on a post-card!
Ange has both the “professional” and “life” credentials to back up her work including a 2-year personal training certificate from Camosun College in Victoria and regularly competing as a Crossfit athlete in the fitness centers across Banff!
Selected highlights episode 404 of the Calgary Business Podcast:
[6:22}...honestly I am still like “pinch me”...I get to walk down Banff Avenue and Cascade Mountain is lit up and then walk into my office
[7:51]...“Banffite”
[8:15]...my two siblings went to the Olympics for cross-country skiing…we grew up in an active, fitness oriented family
[12:23}...for PT (personal trainer) license there is such a varying degree…you can get it over the weekend, over a couple of months or go to school for 2 plus years…which is what I did
[20:16]...my girls were skiing at age 1 because my husband is one to push them…”If you can walk, you can ski”
[32:55]...I also built out the “Glow Method” – a 4-phase method
[33:01]...I call my clients the “Golden Girls”...through this method, you get your Golden GIrl mindset
[33:39]...it’s the most beautiful thing…when the client comes in here versus when they leave…I can see their glow; I can see them feeling lighter
[35:47]...I do monthly workshops called “Soul Food”

This is the 3rd Episode of “Dr. Vee’s Coaching Corner”, a series dedicated to Dr. Veronica De La Rosa sharing her practical business advice for the benefit of small and medium sized businesses across many industries and service sectors.
§§§
In this episode, Dr. Vee continued with the “Self-Confidence” theme from episodes 1 and 2 to focus on how self-confidence gives you the ability to say NO but also to say YES.
Dr. Vee provided 5 tips on how to normalize saying “NO”:
1st | Be clear; just say no
2nd | Start small; say no to small requests. If two requests, say no to one and yes to one.
3rd | Have some statements prepared to reject, say
4th | Delay your response
5th | Remember that assertiveness is key
