Ford temporarily lays off 300 workers amidst ongoing UAW strikes ripple effects in the U.S auto industry
After General Motors (GM) cut 164 jobs, Ford, on Monday announced that over 300 workers had been temporarily laid off due to "knock-on effects" from the ongoing strike against the company and two other US automakers. The strike against the "Big Three" car manufacturers -- Ford, Stellantis and General Motors -- began on September 15 when a previous contract expired without a replacement. Instead of calling for all of its 146,000 members to strike at once, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union has deployed a targeted approach, adding more sites as the weeks drag on. "Our production system is highly interconnected, which means the UAW's targeted strike strategy has knock-on effects for facilities that are not directly targeted for a work stoppage," Ford said in a statement on Monday. "Approximately 330 employees have been asked not to report to work," the statement added, saying the total number of "strike-related layoffs" at Ford now totalled 930. Ford said its sites impacted by Monday's announcement were in Chicago, Illinois and Lima, Ohio. Stellantis and General Motors have also reduced staff at several sites for the same reasons. Initially, the UAW called on some 13,000 members at the three automakers to stop work, then added another 5,600 a week later due to lack of progress in negotiations. A further 7,000 were added the following week to bring the total to some 25,000.

TCS abandons hybrid work, mandates full office attendance from October 1
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT company, is discontinuing its hybrid working policy. As per a report by CNBC-TV18, an internal communication was circulated earlier this month wherein the company has mandated that all employees must return to the office for five days a week, starting from October 1, 2023. Currently, employees are required to be in the office for only three days a week. The official communication states, "As communicated by the CEO and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) in various town hall meetings, it is now mandatory for all associates to be present in the office on all working days (5 days per week if there are no holidays) starting October 1, 2023." In its FY23 annual report, TCS emphasized the importance of employees returning to the office. The report noted that more than half of the company's workforce was hired after March 2020, and these newer employees benefit significantly from physical interactions with senior colleagues and leaders to assimilate and learn from their behavior and ways of thinking. It's worth noting that TCS allocates more than half of its revenue to cover employee benefits. In FY23, the company dedicated as much as 56.6 percent of its revenue to employee benefit expenses. TCS is the largest private employer in India, with a workforce of over six lakh (600,000) employees as of March 2023. Consequently, this change in policy may have a significant impact on a large number of employees who will now need to commute to the office. Previously, in May 2020 during the first wave of the pandemic, TCS's then-CEO, Rajesh Gopinathan, introduced the "25x25 model," with the goal of bringing back 25 percent of the workforce to the office by the year 2025.

Vedanta unveils demerger plan; to create six listed entities with an aim to unlock value
Vedanta Limited, led by billionaire Anil Agarwal, has announced a significant move towards value creation by demerging its business units. The conglomerate plans to establish six separate listed companies: Vedanta Aluminium, Vedanta Oil & Gas, Vedanta Power, Vedanta Steel and Ferrous Materials, Vedanta Base Metals, and Vedanta Limited. This decision aims to create independent verticals for metals, power, aluminium, and oil and gas businesses. The demerger is structured as a vertical split, with shareholders receiving 1 additional share of each of the five newly listed companies for every 1 share of Vedanta Limited they hold. The move is anticipated to unlock the potential value of each business unit, allowing for faster growth and independent management strategies. Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta, highlighted the rationale behind the decision, stating, “By demerging our business units, we believe that will unlock value and potential for faster growth in each vertical. While they all come under the larger umbrella of natural resources, each has its own market, demand and supply trends, and potential to deploy technology to raise productivity.” The appointed leaders for the new entities include John Slaven for Vedanta Aluminium, Vibhav Agarwal for Vedanta Power, Chris Griffith for Vedanta Base Metals, and Arun Misra for Vedanta Limited. The conglomerate, known for its diverse portfolio in metals and minerals, oil and gas, traditional ferrous vertical, and power, is also venturing into the manufacturing of semiconductors and display glass. Emphasizing their commitment to sustainability, Vedanta stated that each company resulting from the demerger aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and net water positivity by 2030. They plan to invest $5 billion over the next decade to accelerate this transition. Notably, Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta subsidiary, also disclosed plans for corporate restructuring to unlock growth, focusing on separate entities for zinc, lead, silver, and recycling businesses. Hindustan Zinc experienced a surge of almost 6 percent. Vedanta holds a 64.92 percent stake in Hindustan Zinc as of the June quarter shareholding pattern.Shares of Vedanta had ended 7 percent higher on Friday in what was its best single-day performance in 2023. Shares of the Anil Agarwal-led mining conglomerate fell to a 31-month low earlier this week following Moody's Investors Service's downgrade of some of the bonds issued by its parent company Vedanta Resources Ltd. and its wholly-owned subsidiaries, as per a CNBC-TV18 report. Deadline alert: Small savings schemes at risk of being frozen if Aadhaar, PAN not updated by Sept 30
Investors in small savings schemes like the Public Provident Fund (PPF), Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS), and National Savings Certificate must ensure they submit their Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Aadhaar card documents by September 30, 2023. Failure to do so could lead to the freezing of their accounts, as per a government notification. If frozen, investors won't be able to carry out transactions or withdraw their money. It's important to note that if investors have already provided these documents, there's no need for resubmission. Additionally, individuals who began investing in small savings schemes on or after April 1, 2023, are already required to have PAN; therefore, they do not need to submit Aadhaar and PAN by the September 30 deadline. Small savings schemes are favored investment options in India, particularly among senior citizens. The government reviews interest rates on these schemes every quarter. For the July-September 2023 quarter, select small savings schemes saw interest rate hikes ranging from 10 to 30 basis points (bps). However, interest rates on schemes like the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS), Public Provident Fund (PPF), Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP), and Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme (SCSS) remained unchanged. The PPF interest rate has remained unchanged since April-June 2020 when it was reduced from 7.9 percent to 7.1 percent. Prior to that, it was lowered in July-September 2019, and the last increase was in October-December 2018 when it was raised to 8 percent from 7.6 percent.

Invest Smart: Mistakes that investors must avoid
In the ever-changing landscape of investments, avoiding pitfalls is crucial for safeguarding your hard-earned money. In this episode of Invest Smart, seasoned financial expert PV Subramanyam sheds light on some of the most common mistakes investors make, potentially jeopardizing their financial stability. In this article, we break down Subramanyam's insights to help you navigate the intricate world of investments wisely. One of the most significant mistakes investors make is venturing into the market without adequate knowledge. Subramanyam emphasized the importance of understanding your investment goals and knowing whether to seek professional advice. Blindly investing based on blogs or videos, especially for substantial sums, can lead to significant financial losses. Distinguishing between investing and trading is vital. Investors generally have a long-term perspective, allowing them to weather market fluctuations. Traders, on the other hand, engage in frequent buying and selling, requiring constant vigilance. Being clear about your approach helps you make appropriate decisions aligned with your risk tolerance, he added. Your investment horizon significantly impacts your asset allocation. Subramanyam said short-term goals might necessitate a more conservative approach, involving a mix of equity and debt. For long-term goals, equities are a preferred choice, given their potential for higher returns over extended periods, despite market volatility. Another important aspect as per Subramanyam is to assume that inflation will always remain stable. He emphasized that your investment returns must consistently outpace inflation to preserve your purchasing power. Failing to do so could erode your wealth over time. Successful investing requires a combination of knowledge, patience, and emotional discipline. By understanding these common pitfalls investors can make informed decisions, safeguarding their financial futures.

Shukrayaan-1 Mission: From launch date to budget, heres what you need to know
After achieving a historic milestone on August 23, 2023, by becoming the first nation to successfully land on the South Pole of the Moon, ISRO’s next mission is Venus. ISRO's Shukrayaan 1 mission, focused on Venus exploration, is scheduled for launch in December 2024. Remarkably, the concept for this mission was conceived back in 2012. The upcoming ISRO mission to Venus, known as Shukrayaan 1, is projected to cost between ₹500 crore to ₹1,000 crore, depending on the level of instrumentation. S. Somanath, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), provided this estimate. Launching a mission from Earth to Venus at the optimal time occurs approximately every 19 months. ISRO has also identified alternative launch opportunities in 2026 and 2028. The delay in launching Shukrayaan 1 from its originally planned mid-2023 schedule to December 2024 was attributed to the pandemic, which disrupted manufacturing processes and commitments to commercial launch services. This delay also had ripple effects on other ISRO projects, including Aditya L-1 and Chandrayaan-3. Shukrayaan 1 is designed as an orbiter mission, equipped with advanced scientific payloads, including a high-resolution synthetic aperture radar and a ground-penetrating radar. These instruments will enable comprehensive research on Venus's geological and volcanic activities, surface emissions, wind patterns, cloud cover, and other planetary characteristics.

Since the start of 2022, Indian startups have terminated 30,000 jobs
Indian startups have faced a significant workforce reduction, with over 30,000 employees being laid off since the beginning of 2022. According to Moneycontrol, approximately 95 startups have implemented these measures, aiming to cut costs and prioritize profitability. Although there has been a slight slowdown in layoffs in recent months, the situation remains concerning. In 2023 alone, 49 startups have let go of nearly 13,000 employees, with the actual numbers potentially higher due to silent layoffs becoming a common practice among startups. The trend has been intensified by successive rounds of layoffs carried out by various startups, including prominent names like Dunzo, Byju’s, and Cuemath. Byju's recently announced a significant restructuring effort, potentially eliminating 4,000 to 5,000 jobs, bringing their total layoffs to about 10,000 since the start of 2022. In a recent development, Fi, a neobanking startup backed by investors like Peak XV, Temasek, and Alpha Wave Ventures, is laying off 10% of its workforce to extend its cash runway amid a challenging funding landscape. Despite the challenges, the funding winter continues to impact the startup ecosystem. Indian startups raised $376 million in private equity and venture capital funding in August 2023, down from $523 million in July. This decline comes despite significant funding rounds, such as Zepto’s $200 million fundraising, highlighting the industry-wide struggle to secure investments. Last 2 days left to exchange ₹2,000 notes; Will deadline be extended?
The deadline for depositing or exchanging Rs 2,000 currency notes is just two days away. Will the deadline be extended? As of now, the deadline to exchange or deposit the 2000 rupee notes is 30th September. However, some experts and bankers are of the opinion that the deadline could be extended to try and ensure the withdrawal of the currency notes as close to 100% as possible. A report by Moneycontrol says that RBI may extend the deadline till end of October for the return of the 2000 rupee notes. The report quotes a senior official familiar with the development, "It looks like the RBI will extend the date for deposit and exchange of Rs 2,000 notes by at least for a month because it has to factor in the non-resident Indians as well as others living overseas." As of now, approximately ₹24,000 crore worth of the notes are still in circulation. As of September 1, the central bank reported that Rs 2,000 banknotes worth Rs 3.32 lakh crore, which is 93% of the currency notes in circulation, had returned to the banking system. On August 31, the remaining Rs 2,000 notes in circulation amounted to Rs 0.24 lakh crore. By July 31, 88% of these notes, worth Rs 3.14 lakh crore, had been returned. On May 19, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had issued an order to withdraw the denomination and set September 30 as the last date for individuals to deposit or exchange their Rs 2,000 notes. It's important to note that Rs 2,000 banknotes will continue to be legal tender even after September 30, 2023.

SEBI holds MCXs new platform launch, amid concerns from Chennai Financial Markets & Accountability
India's Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) has announced that the launch of its new commodity derivatives platform, scheduled for next week, has been put on hold following directives from the country's markets regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). MCX confirmed that SEBI will be discussing the platform in its upcoming technical advisory committee meeting. MCX revealed that they will continue conducting mock tests on the platform until further instructions are received from SEBI. This decision comes after MCX had previously announced the launch of its new platform on October 3, following multiple delays. SEBI's intervention was prompted by concerns raised by the Chennai Financial Markets and Accountability (CFMA), an investor group, regarding MCX's technical support for the new platform. CFMA had urged the market regulator to ensure that MCX had the necessary technical infrastructure in place. In response to CFMA's concerns, SEBI informed MCX about the letter received from CFMA dated September 27, highlighting the "technical issues" involved. As a result, SEBI decided to address these concerns during its committee meeting.

Byjus implements strict social media policy amid restructuring and layoffs
In a bid to manage its image amid a massive restructuring, leading edtech firm Byju's has announced a stringent new social media policy. The policy, effective immediately, prohibits employees from engaging directly with any media outlet or sharing company-related information, including pictures, videos, or screenshots. Violations could lead to disciplinary or legal action, according to the newly released document titled Social Media Policy Version 1.0. This move follows the company’s recent decision to restructure its businesses, resulting in the layoffs of approximately 4,000 to 5,000 employees. Byju's has been under scrutiny due to delays in appraisals, provident fund payments, and withheld performance-linked pay since 2022. The company has opted for video and audio calls to inform employees about their terminations to prevent leaks, discontinuing written communication. Byju’s also stated that it would actively monitor employees’ interactions, external communications, and social media postings related to the company. This policy applies to various platforms, including Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Telegram, WhatsApp, Quora, blogs, wikis, and chat forums. The implementation of this policy coincides with Byju’s efforts to conserve cash amid a liquidity crunch.
