Listen to De-Rance Blaylock Sing!

We will be back to our regularly scheduled podcasts with some changes ahead. We didn't want to leave you episode less this week so we wanted to revisit one of our Bonus episodes with the very talented De-Rance Blaylock. Oh and she sings in this episode too!

De-Rance Renette Blaylock sang with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s In-Unison Chorus during its inaugural season in 1994 and two years following.  In 1997, De-Rance left St. Louis and continued her vocal training under Richard Tucker at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL. She played one of the title roles in A&M’s production of Porgy & Bess, opposite American Idol winner Ruben Studdard. In 1999, De-Rance came home and later joined the St. Louis Symphony Chorus.  She now sings with Chris & Kyle with True Spirit, and Jesse Williams & Total Praise.

She has sung behind some of the world's greatest talents, including Dionne Warwick, Lionel Richie, Daryl Coley, Karen Clark-Sheard.

De-Rance has toured the country and Greece with the Phil Woodmore Singers as they perform the critically acclaimed project, Antigone in Ferguson, an ancient Greek tragedy about what happens when personal conviction and state law clash, and violence ensues.

Antigone in Ferguson has now been featured as an off-Broadway hit in New York. It was featured during five weeks at the Harlem Stage in 2018, and again at St. Ann and Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn in 2019. As a lead soloist, De-Rance is known for singing the last song of the production, titled I’m Covered, written by Dr. Phil Woodmore. The song is available on all digital music outlets.

Food for Thought: Our full interview with Chef, Shelley Chapman

We thought this episode would be great for the holiday season. Shelley discusses how to balance mindful eating, and enjoy the holiday food without all of the guilt and overindulgence. We also know this holiday may not be the same as it has been in years past for many of our listeners. We hope this episode gives you some bit of relief from the chaos and heartache of 2020.

"I’m a Compassionate Carnivore, Mindful Eater, and Conscious Chef who cooks and eats a high plant-based diet … and shares it with you.

When I’m not teaching, filming, or cooking, I’m dancing to a mix of Kompas, Salsa, Soca, Reggae, Afrobeat, and Kizomba.  Eating something dope, divine, and delicious. Spending time in nature. Enjoying art. Learning a new skill.

I’m a Spelman woman, it was there that I began to explore healthier eating options and deal with my emotional eating and body issues.

I’m a Harvard graduate, it was there that I earned my Master’s in Education and decided to become an educator.  After graduating, I taught Spanish for five years but the classroom wasn’t really my jam.  In 2009, I  found my true calling teaching in the kitchen and on camera.

What do I teach?

I teach mindful eating and plant-based nutrition.

While I won’t condemn bacon nor ice-cream, I will share the consequences of eating them and provide you with a delicious alternative.

I teach people how to eat a satisfying and nourishing plant-based diet on my YouTube Channel.

When it comes to making changes to your diet, medical warnings aren’t always enough.  Sometimes you just need that perfect plant-based substitute for cheese or some other ingredient before you make the commitment. I got you.

I teach you how to lose weight without the gym, instead of working out, we work in.

I went from a size 12 to a size 2 in one year. When it comes to changing your habits and bettering your health, you have to get rid of the toxins and junk.  In my workshops, you learn how to get rid of toxic food, behaviors, thoughts, actions, and relationships for a total shift in wellness and health."

~Shelley

therefore, my work is not merely a showcase of me playing ‘dress-up’ with a model…

I have a responsibility with my talent and craft to use it to heal, uplift, and rebuild...one project at a time.”

We are going to be back next week with a brand new episode. Please be patient with us as we deal with life and unexpected circumstances. In the meantime please enjoy this bonus episode! It is our full interview with Dr. Phil Woodmore. We are also happy to announce the release of his book,  Antigone in Ferguson: A Journey Through the Transformative Power of Music. Here is a note from Phil about the release of his book:

"I am so grateful to have been on an incredible journey with a project I composed called Antigone in Ferguson these past four years; it has changed my life!

In celebration of this amazing project, I have written a book documenting the process of creating Antigone in Ferguson and sharing the transformative stories of the audiences and choir members who participated.

Please consider supporting me as I try to effect change in my community by purchasing my book.  This book also speaks to the injustices that avail in our communities and is a platform to encourage courageous conversations with your inner circle and community at large.

I pray that you and your families are safe during these trying times and that this book might be a necessary support to these hard conversations which MUST occur for us to make observable progress toward the goal of people living together in genuine peace and goodwill for each other.

Respectfully,

Dr. Phil"

Broke, Gifted, and Black
We are two artists (Nikki and Nono) that have experienced life being broke, gifted, and black. We understand that it is a mental and financial struggle to turn your passion into a consistent paycheck. Join us weekly when we discuss everything art and industry-related, give out our Broke AF and Gifted AF Awards, and interview artists and performers from all genres and every walk of life to share their journey of turning their talents into a career. Hopefully, you'll enjoy a lot of laughs and learn some priceless life lessons to take with you along the way.
