BBHT 27: Boosting mitochondrial health to help…everything
Mitochondria are the power factory for your cells. Just like any engine the fuel we feed it and the way we drive it has an impact on how well the mitochondria do their job.
In this podcast Scott from Optimal Life and I talk through what poor mitochondrial health looks like and what can be done about it.

BBHT 26: How your DNA impacts inflammation
Knowing is half the battle. Some people have DNA that makes them great distance athletes, others have genes for short term memory. Some of us have genes that make us prone to inflammation.
Being aware of what your genetic weaknesses has been a huge asset for me personally when trying to get over autoimmune issues.

BBHT 25: Breathing, boobs and jaw problems
It turns out that we are coverd in bugs/ bacteria. Skin is the big one most people are aware of and a few have read into the gut microbiome and the impact an imbalance in your guts can have on your health. One microbiome that Scott Wustenberg from Optimal life and I were oblivious to was the microbiome in breast tissue!
In todays talk Scott and I talk about the microbiome in breast tissue and what an imbalance there can do to your health and the health of any babies currently breastfeeding off said boob.
We also run through the neurology of jaw problems and talk about how stress can have a huge impact on the mechanics of how your jaw moves and also how a jaw movement problem can impact your stress! (chicken and the egg scenario).
To finish any good conversation that includes stress we talk about breathing...because its important to breathe...really important.

BBHT 24: Anti-aging and mitochondrial health
This one was fascinating. Scott Wustenberg from Optimal Life said 'mitochondrial leakage' in a conversation and it was something I had never heard before, so we made a podcast about it.
It turns out that a consequence of over eating and under exercising, essentially not buring off excess calories, will damage your mitochondria (the part of each cell that produces energy) and over time the constant energy leakage will cause the mitochondria to breakdown faster than it should.
Mitochondria are pretty much the main thing keeping us alive, anything we can do to optimise our mitochondrial health will result in better energy levels and a longer life.
In the podcast Scott and I talk through a range of techniques that have been shown to help with mitochondrial health.

BBHT 22: Anxiety and what to do about it
Anxiety is horrible. If you have it or know someone who has it you have seen exactly how horrible.
There are many different causes for anxiety, Scott from Optimal life and I go through the neurology, biochemisty and metabolic components of anxiety and run through some simple research backed approaches that have helped our patients in the past.
Please note that neither Scott or myself are psychologists and that the biopsychosocial component to stress and anxiety is a major component and should be managed by a psychologist. We are presenting the neuro-mechanics and biochemisty of anxiety and what can be done to help those components.

In todays podcast Scott Wustenberg from Optimal life and I talk through a few brain tips on how to regain control over a meltdown. We also answer the age old question of what is the best nap duration to have during the day (its 40min if you couldn't be bothered listening).

BBHT 19: How to sleep better
Sleep is vital for several reasons. Firstly, during the initial 2-3 sleep cycles your body repairs the damage done that day. Stress, poor eating, exercise causing muscle micro tears all require recovery, if you are not sleeping well the repair phase for your body will not be as effective.
What we also know now is that in the later sleep cycles our brian gets detoxed. The metabolic load of what you went through during the day is cleaned up through your glymphatic system. This is also when your brain produces the neurotransmitters it will need for tomorrow as well as converting short term memories in to long term memories.
Poor sleep habits will have a significant impact on your brain and body health long term, which is why it is vitally important to know what you can do to sleep better.
Scott Wustenberg from Optimal life and I talk all about poor sleep and what to do to get effective sleep.

BBHT 17: How viruses impact your brain and immune system
In todays podcast Scott Wustenerg from Optimal Life  talk about the long term effects of viruses on our brain and bodies. There have been some interesting studies published looking at the link between Alzheimers and herpes viruses in the brain. It appears that the white plaque formations that occur in Alzheimers in some cases may be due to your immune system trying to wrap up the virus and that the symptoms of Alzheimers is due to too many of these protective bubbles in the brain effecting the way  neurons signal to one another.
Scott and I talk about how this process isnt limited to Alzheimers and that the brains mechanism  for protecting itself from viruses is in all of us who have the herpes virus when it makes its way into our brian.
We talk about how it happens, why it happens and what can be done to promote long term brain health.
Enjoy.

BBHT 15: Adrenal fatigue and sex hormones, testing and how to fix it
STRESS! In this podcast Scott Wustenberg from Optimal life talk through my recent stress hormone test results.
Over the last few years my exercise and diet has been pretty stable but over that time there has been around 4 kg of muscle loss and...a bit of fat gain...Throw in poor sleeping patterns and a short term memory issue that is worsening and it prompted me to figure out what was going on. Scott put me onto a stress hormone test kit called the DUTCH test and the results explained a lot of what I was feeling and paved the way for what I needed to do to recover.
Increasing difficulty sheading fat as we age is a common problem, if this sounds familiar to you have a listen to the podcast.

BBHT 14: Environmental toxicity and the impact on genes
Environmental toxicity has been hypothesised to have an impact on your genes for 3 generations. Which means that the food shortages your grandparents went through during WW2 is still effecting how your body reacts to stress and toxic load. Then add the golden age of smoking in the 60's and more recent environmental issues and you start to see why everyone has a peanut allergy and gluten is causing the problems we are seeing now but not in previous generations.

Scott Wustenberg and I go through environmental toxicity from a patient specific point of view, then talk big picture multi-generation impact. Enjoy.

BBHT 12: Adrenal function, Stress, Genetics and your Brain
It wont come as a surprise that Stress is bad for you. Chronic stress will change what genes you activate, will have a negative impact on your brain health (especially the hippocampus where short term memories are formed) and have an impact on your muscle and organ health. Stress is one of the biggest issues with modern lifestyles.
Knowing is half the battle. Scott Wustenberg from Optimal Life and I talk through the biochemical and neurological processes that occur with chronic stress and what can be done about it. We talk about what tests are available to find out if stress is effecting you negatively and what measures you can take to minimise the damage.
