Episode #37: The DIY CRISPR Revolution: Is Gene Editing for Everyone? - Jo Zayner
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking then? Why hasn't anyone DIY extracted their own stem cells by taking a little fat from their body? It sounds like so much fun. Maybe you weren't thinking that? But I hope you were. This is the way most of my projects start. Finding something interesting that can be done if people just put in a little time and effort to figure out how to do it." ~ Jo Zayner Jo Zayner is a prominent biohacker, artist and entrepreneur who has made significant contributions to the field of do-it-yourself (DIY) biology. Jo is best known for the work done in gene editing, and democratizing access to biotechnology. With a history of programming, a BA in plant biology and a Ph.D in biophysics from the University of Chicago, Jo also earned a Masters in Science, specializing in cell and molecular biology, prior to receiving a Ph.D. Jo was also previously involved with NASA’s biology research centre, where they helped design potential Martian colony habitat designs. Zayner is now the founder and CEO of The ODIN, a company that produces affordable kits for DIY genetic engineering. Jo has also been involved in a number of high-profile biohacking projects, including the creation of fluorescent beer and the insertion of a CRISPR-edited gene into their own body to enhance muscle growth. Zayner is a popular speaker and advocate for DIY biology, and has been featured in numerous media outlets including The New York Times, Wired, and Forbes. Episode #36 - CRISPR, Biohacking & Gene Editing from Home - David Ishee
"It seems like every time a new gene therapy comes out they reset the record for “most expensive drug of all time”. At this rate by 2030 we’ll have a $10MM dollar injection no one can afford. Something has to give to make this tech actually helpful to regular people."~ David Ishee David Ishee is a dog breeder and biohacker from Mississippi whose goal is to make genetic engineering accessible to everyone. He learned genetic engineering to cure genetic diseases in dogs and be a better dog breeder. He's also working to share the knowledge and skills he'd acquired to teach people how to use these technologies on a budget, in a small space, and without a degree. Ishee, a member of what’s called the “biohacker” movement, says he is hoping to use inexpensive new gene-editing techniques to modify the genes of Dalmatians. By repairing a single DNA letter in their genomes, Ishee believes, he can rid them of an inherited disease, hyperuricemia, that's almost as closely associated with the breed as their white coats and black spots. David has gained a lot of media attention from his recent appearance in the Netflix documentary - "Unnatural Selection", where he shares his journey in attempting to create green fluorescent mastiff puppies by adding Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)-expressing E. coli to dog sperm. He has received mixed responses from such a controversial take on gene editing. Episode #35- Reality is an Illusion w/Evolutionary Psychology & Mathematical Models - Donald Hoffman
“Conscious realism makes a bold claim: consciousness, not spacetime and its objects, is fundamental reality and is properly described as a network of conscious agents. To earn its keep, conscious realism must do serious work ahead. It must ground a theory of quantum gravity, explain the emergence of our spacetime interface and its objects, explain the appearance of Darwinian evolution within that interface, and explain the evolutionary emergence of human psychology.” ― Donald D. Hoffman, The Case Against Reality: Why Evolution Hid the Truth from Our Eyes Professor Donald Hoffman is an American cognitive psychologist and popular science author. He is a professor in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, with joint appointments in the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science, and the School of Computer Science. Hoffman studies consciousness, visual perception and evolutionary psychology using mathematical models and psychophysical experiments. Episode #34 - Various Drugs & Their Effects on Perception - Gaige Clark
“Through much of my work there is a lean towards a strategy some have called patternism. What this means is I take research across various subfields of psychology and neuroscience and synthesize the information to make arguments that aim to help us rethink the nature of mental illness and disorder, which seem to be ubiquitously misunderstood in today’s world. Social psychology, neurobiology, evolutionary psychology, and pharmacology are intertwined to create theories and models of disorders such as schizophrenia, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and to understand the nature of consciousness, psychedelic intoxication, and what it means to be human.” Gauge Clark is quiet the keyboard-driven researcher whom focuses on multiple domains of brain science. Episode #32 - Stoicism, Ancient Wisdom, Purpose & Spirituality - Simon Drew
“I often find myself coming back to the Stoic practice of looking at what I can control and what I can’t. If I had to name one exercise that could change more lives than any other, this would be it. Once you understand how to spend your efforts only in areas where you have power, and how to not spend any effort thinking or worrying about things that you can’t control, that’s when you become a truly effective human being. " ~ Simon Drew Stoicism has been a common thread though some of history’s great leaders. It has been practiced by Kings, presidents, artists, writers and entrepreneurs. Marcus Aurelius, Frederick the Great, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt —just to name a few—were all influenced by Stoic philosophy. So what is Stoicism? Who were the Stoics? How can you be a Stoic? Today we are joined by Simon Drew to help us answer some of these questions. Simon is an Alignment coach, musician, writer and podcaster originally from the Sunshine Coast, Australia. He is most famous for his podcast - The Practical Stoic Podcast, where Simon has been exploring the ideas of Stoicism for numerous years, in addition to helping thousands of people around the world to transform themselves using these ancient principles. Blueprint of Big Ideas Podcast
What if quantum physics isn’t just some strange phenomenon locked away in the subatomic world—what if it’s shaping our reality? What if the very technology we use today relies on quantum effects... and those same effects are happening inside your body? In this milestone 50th episode, we sit down with Professor Warwick Bowen, one of the world’s leading researchers in quantum physics and precision sensing. Based at the University of Queensland, Professor Bowen leads groundbreaking work that sits at the intersection of quantum mechanics, biology, and emerging technologies. His research is redefining how we understand life, consciousness, and the future of biotechnology. We explore big questions like: – Is quantum biology the missing piece in our understanding of life? – Can quantum mechanics explain processes in the human brain? – How is quantum sensing being used in medicine and biotech right now? – What breakthroughs are just around the corner—and how might they change our world? Whether you’re a science nerd or just curious about the future of health, tech, and consciousness, this is one episode you don’t want to miss. Join us now and step into the world where biology meets the quantum realm. Find out more about Professor Bowen’s work here: https://scholar.google.com.au/citations?user=ieH7nn8AAAAJ&hl=en
