This isn't a movie review podcast. Here we look at the cultural significance of what I call "white movies". Some of you may ask what is a white movie? Most American made movies are white movies. Made for and by white people. If you have trouble with that just think about what you would call a Black movie and why and then reverse it. White culture is so often overlooked, but movies are an artform that reflects culture and peoples thoughts and feelings about life. So what are these white movies saying about life and the people in America? That's what we're here to investigate.

This week we watch Double Indemnity. A film noir classic! It has everything; sharp banter, moody lighting, a femme fatale, a trouble male lead, and a staunch detective figure slowly unraveling the case!
We dive into what makes this so memorable. With stellar performances from its leads, but that's for a 1944 film? Can modern audience still relate?
Movies back then were more literary then movies today. This often led to more unexpected plot twists. They had to keep an audience engaged and they could not rely on computer generate effects. They had a different pacing and most notably budget restraints. Does that make the storytelling less enjoyable?
And what does this movie say about American society? This button down world it presents, but who are the rule breakers and how are they dealt with? Why do they break the rules? Where do minorities fit in?
And lastly we return to Black casting, the first podcast to do Black recasts of movies!
Now, go rent the movie and enjoy our talk about Double Indemnity

Man of Steel brought out some deep seated truths!
We talk about heroes and the nature of heroism. We question Zach Synder's interpretation while recognizing the things he's great at, iconography, visuals, great individual moments and a truly epic scale.
Man Of Steel tells the story of Kah-el becoming the hero we know as Superman.
Listen in as we break down the run time, the true nature of Superman (to us, at least), what we would have like to have seen or done differently and if the movie asks us to fill in the blanks where we don't want to and answers questions that we don't ask!
Also, does Superman have a secret identity? Does he need one in Zach Snyder's Universe?
Oh, and we love Amy Adams!

The villain was right! The common refrain that's been popular for the last decade and a half or so.
It's true that movies have trended to more sympathetic villains but that doesn't mean their right!
But often times their cause is just. A vague notion of something better for humanity!
Is humanity so broken that we'll accept any solution?
If it's not properly and loudly rebutted, yes, we will!
here, I break down why movies and storytelling is teaching us that villains are right and how we can dispel these notions.
we just have to make the heroes as complex as the villains!
Simple.

This week we talk Old School. A movie that perfectly encapsulates the changing attitudes in comedy and America at the turn of the millenium.
One of the birth of the frat-pack movies, this film shows us the gen-x midlife crisis and is really a fantasy film for that demographic.
It was hugely influential. We were both college studends at the time this movie came out and we saw it's influence and reach first hand. Everyone loved it. It was monumental.
but what does it say? It's a fantasy in that there are almost no consequences of note for the main characters and any one opposed to them is punished severely. Haha, funny, until people think that's how life should be!
This movie was the beginning of an era of Bro-Comedy and the careers of all of it's leads.
But what does it actually say about society? Listen on to see what we think.

Denzel Washginton's new movie Gladiator 2 is a mixed bag!
We talk the history of historical epic movies and the responsibility to make accurate or not. In this case, not so much, but that's fine because it's entertainment, right?
We talk the power of an actor like Denzel Washington.
We look at what worked and didn't work and then we try to put the movie in a modern context. What messages is this movie sending, that it needed ancient rome as a setting to get across to us. Is this movie an allegory for American from 2020 to 2024? In many ways, yes! It's fascinating.

we really just wanted to talk about Robert Zemeckis, but we begin talking about Forrest Gump a movie that barely holds water today for a few reasons. Though the story telling is still sweet and the tech is elite.
A look at Robert Zemeckis' career takes us on a journey through technology in movies that enhances our own world rather than create new ones. It's fascinating and his ability to go between genres and styles is second to none.
Gives RZ his flowers!

We talk about 2006's Man of the Year, a political satire where a comedian KIND OF becomes president, at least for a little while.
The movie falls flat but brings up some interesting thoughts about the state of media in 2006 and how this movie's noticeable lack of any diversity echoes a change in the media landscape of that time with regards to Black representation. A period of time that I call 'The Crossover Era'. It's been bleak ever since!
But what's not bleak? Our discussion of 2006's Man of the Year!

An extension of my Black Guys on White Movies podcast, I am taking a look at what movies are playing in theaters right now!
Using the Fandango app, I am viewing a local AMC theater. By using a major theater chain I can see what movies are going to be seen by the most people.
Are there any Black movies in theaters? Any Mexican movies? Any Asian movies? Native movies? If not, then they must be white movies!

We tackle Freddy head on, but not in our dreams, on a podcast.
What's up with the trend of 80s horror being set in the suburbs? What darkness lies beneath perfectly trimmed lawns? We talk Wes Craven and how he parodied himself into another franchise with scream and got parodied by the Wayans brothers into yet another franchise. Is he the franchise king?
And we wonder how the suburbs is the perfect place to stage horror. The false sense of safety is the perfect backdrop and how these horror psychopathic characters are metaphors for the very human depravities that happen in those communities.

Jazz!
This week we fix the hit movie Whiplash directed by Damian Chazelle. This movie did well in its run and even won a bunch of awards but it still left us feeling....unsatisfied.
We go through the ups and downs of the movie and propose a few "fixes", all in good fun!
Then we talk about the culture that praises abusive teachers and mentors and discuss on this movie is the anti-Karate Kid. What great timing for us, right?

Avatar!
James Cameron!
$$$$$!!
James Cameron is a great filmmaker, right? Why is he so often overlooked in conversations about great filmmakers? And franchise creators!
We go pretty deep into James Cameron's legacy and how he created his own genre of films.
We also tackle the film, Avatar, itself with it's myriad of racial issues, some of which I'm sure came to your mind just upon seeing the title!
Despite this it made a billion dollars, fam. Easily! Why?!
We look at the appeal of the film, the leap in technology required to make the film and how writing it for a younger audience definitely PAID off.
What we thought would be a quick episode turned out to be a long discussion. Tap in and let us know your thoughts!

We finish our discussion of the Karate Kid with a look at it's cultural relevance and impact.
A movie that spawned numerous other properties. Multiple movies, a 6 season tv show and a couple of video games.
Not to mention that it launced thousands of dojos across the country.
This movie was hugely influential and came at the right time.
but where does it stand in the wider cultural?
Why isn't it aknoweldge more that Danny is Italian and from Jersey?
Where are the minorities other than Mr. Miyagi?
What else is going on in the world at this time?
And many more questions about the legacy of the Karate Kid.

When was the last time you watched the movie The Karate Kid? I know it's been awhile but the movie is different than you thought.
It's better.
We talk about this quinessential 80s and sports movie that actually has very little Karate but is packed full of solid life lessons.
But how white is it?
In this episode we talk through the story. Next week, in Part 2 we'll talk cultural impact and it's place in history.

Gladiator is peak dad cinema, no one is aruging that, but it's also an audacious film. Who gets to tell what stories in history? We look at the classic film's depiction of race and ethnicity. We talk about America's self-proclaimed right to tell any history it wants to and what that's about.
Side note, Bernard is a Roman History major so he had a lot to say about the movie and that period time!

Occassionally Bernard and I get together to talk movie franchises specific. These episodes are called Franchise Talk.
In this one we talk about Zach Snyder's recent comment on the Joe Rogan Podcast about Batman. Are we weirdly protecting a god, or do Franchises and legacy characters have rules that allow them to survive for DECADES?
