12. Robyne Robinson on the Value of Art in our Communities

Back in May I had the honor of interviewing the glamorous and very accomplished Robyne Robinson.  Robyne is a creative powerhouse for positive social change, a champion of the arts and of her community.  She lived in my hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota for over 20 years, where she was an Emmy-winning news broadcaster before becoming a creative entrepreneur.

Robyne has done so many incredible things across several different fields.  I don’t want to risk leaving anything out in my introduction, so here’s a bit from the ‘About’ section on Robyne’s website for her public art consulting company, five by five:

“Robyne has had a commanding presence in the Minnesota Arts community as an entrepreneur, advocate, journalist, designer and consultant.

During her tenure as Art Director and fiveXfive Consultant at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Minnesota received more than $5 million in art commissions for performances, displays and art installations created by Minnesota and Upper Midwest artists.  Her curation work in public, performance and visual arts garnered praise from The New York Times, Forecast Public Art and from International travel bloggers, who in 2017 proclaimed MSP Terminal 2 One of the 12 Most Beautiful Terminals in the World because of her focus on promoting local and regional artists.

Robyne created an Emmy-winning platform for Minnesota Arts during her years as a TV news anchor-reporter that garnered interest from news outlets like the BBC and Variety.  She also made financial education and business development in the arts one of her key initiatives as a 2010 candidate for Lt. Governor of Minnesota.

She owned and curated flatland, an award-winning contemporary art gallery featured in esteemed art publications such as Art News and Juxtapoz.  She also created Exhibit, a curatorial collaborative that also sponsored microloans to artists.

Robyne has served on numerous arts boards including the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) and the Minnesota Museum of American Art, where she served as Board Chair.  She is also a University of Minnesota Hubert Humphrey Public Policy Fellow, who traveled to New Zealand and Australia with the Humphrey Institute to participate in national talks on reparations to the Indigenous people of both countries.

Robyne has been a respected jewelry designer for more than a decade.  Her ROX Jewelry line is sold by shopping networks, major department stores and museums such as the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Plains Art Museum, Lewis Museum of Maryland, the Walker and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

Robyne is also a freelance writer for Artful Living and Art of the West Magazine.”

So, Robyne is a force to be reckoned with.  I’m so excited to share our conversation with you today, where you’ll get to learn more about Robyne’s life and many of her projects, in particular her public art consulting firm, five by five.

9. Gary Drostle on Smashing Tiles – Part 2
Today we have the incredible artist, Gary Drostle, back on the podcast. Back in February, I had the pleasure of interviewing Gary. The episode with the first half of our conversation dropped on Monday. If you haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet, definitely go back and do that now, because it was so much fun and it really informs the rest of the conversation that you’ll get to listen to today. In the last episode, we talked about Gary’s beginnings as a muralist and mosaic artist, where Gary gets his artistic inspiration, and the stories behind two of Gary’s major works – a floor mosaic at a hospital and a public mosaic sculpture. In this episode, the second half of our conversation, we go into more of Gary’s most satisfying moments in his career so far, including a couple of mosaics for the University of Iowa, and a collaborative community project in Colombia. Gary also generously shares his daily work routine, how he organizes his studio workflow, and how he gets most of his projects. Based in Southeast London, UK, Gary Drostle has over 30 years of experience in public art, working primarily with painting and mosaic techniques. His mosaic work in particular has won several prestigious awards and gained international recognition – he has completed major commissions in Iowa, Chicago, California, and Washington DC. Gary has also worked on community projects in Chile and Colombia. In addition, Gary continues to create major public artworks at his home in London, including commissions for TFL – Transport for London, Chester City Council, London Borough of Bexley, The Royal College of General Practitioners and many more. I met Gary at the first International Urban Mosaic Intervention in Chile in 2014, and later that year we both participated in the Second Biennial of Muralism and Public Art in Cali, Colombia. He is a much awaited and requested guest for this podcast, and it’s an honor to have him on! 7. Back To The Beginning - Shannon's Mural Thesis Project - Part 1
On this week’s episode I decided to do something a little different. The interview last week with Gustavo Lira took me a little bit down memory lane, back to when I was just getting into muralism. So, I thought it would be a great opportunity to start sharing my undergraduate thesis that I wrote back then - in 2011 and 2012! It was called: Latino/Latin American Muralism and Social Change: The Social Significance of the Cold Spring Mural. I combined research (from books and online documents) with first-hand interviews with artists (in Minnesota and Chile), as well as the practical experience of organizing a community mural in Cold Spring, Minnesota. As I organized this project I was studying at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in Minnesota, and I was blessed to have amazing advisors to guide me: Bruce Campbell and Elaine Rutherford, to whom I will be forever grateful. I have changed a lot since 2012, and so has the world of murals. So I thought it would only make sense to share it if I also shared my present-day thoughts about the information and ideas presented. I had a lot of fun with that, and I like how it turned out! In this episode we get into the background for my thesis, including the mural project I organized in Cold Spring, Minnesota. I also define what I mean by the term “social change.” A few questions I pose in the episode: • What first comes to your mind when you hear the word, “mural”? • My thesis is based on the idea that collaborative, community murals create the most, and the most sustainable, social change. In so many words (though I never wrote this exactly), a collaborative community mural is the “best” form of muralism. I’m not sure I 100% agree with this anymore. What do you think? • Is it your sense that Chile is striving to maintain cultural autonomy separate from the U.S.? Or do you think that Chile copies U.S. culture? Or is it a little of both? 6.
It's a lot harder that I thought it would be to edit them out in Garageband. If you have any tips or resources that could help me with this, I'd love to hear about them! Thank you!
