Health Education: Addiction and the Family

***This audio is directly from it's associated YouTube video, so there are some very brief audio gaps.

Jim Edwards works at the Edgewood Treatment Center here in Nanaimo, where they treat a variety of behavioural and psychological disorders.  Chances are, you or someone you know has experienced substance abuse.

We usually think of behaviour as the problem, when really it's just a symptom.  Substance abuse so often serves as a source of comfort or good feelings, or an escape, or both.

There are many behaviours we do that are compensations for our relationships, or life and work stress.  It could manifest as substance abuse, binge eating disorder, anorexia, aggression, avoidance, dependence, etc.  Some of these behaviours are less destructive, others more.

Speaking for myself, all of the above emotions and behaviours have played a role in my personal experiences, and emotional and spiritual growth.

On a fundamental level, we yearn to accept ourselves amidst the many societal expectations and perceived norms.  I think that if we can take information, like that from Jim's presentation, to reflect on our own experiences, emotions, and behaviours, then we can really begin to understand ourselves better, as well as begin to feel empathy for those who represent the extreme end of the dependency continuum.

Why Master of Sport Corissa Sivorot video documents her progress, running a kettlebell competition during pandemic

In this episode I am joined by Master of Sport ranked Corissa Sivorot.

We chat about some of the trials and tribulations of both running a gym and kettlebell competitions during the pandemic, as well as what has changed between now and when the pandemic started.

It's not all pandemic talk though.  I ask Corissa why she is so consistent with her video "diaries" of her kettlebell sport training: why does she do it, what does she get out of it, what are her interactions with others on social media like, and when does being plugged into the social media space become too much?

We get deep, but also share some laughs.  With any luck, you'll be better acquainted with Corissa Sivorot, who she is, and what makes her tick.

Nikolai Puchlov of the Seattle Kettlebell Club

Nikolai was kind and candid enough with us to share his experience with how he started lifting weights, and how he found kettlebells as a way to rehab some old injuries and regain his strength, and finally how he was able to recruit a legion of followers who praise the many benefits of kettlebell sport.

Don't forget about Nikolai's upcoming competition on December 1st, to be held at Seattle Kettlebell Club Headquarters.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

Don’t forget, we have our 2nd Annual Grip Strength Kettlebell Competition coming up on Sept. 15 at the Coast Bastion Inn in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Registration is on right now and open to al lifters. Sign up before Aug. 6 and you get your additional events free of charge - that’s $75 CDN plus GST for 1 or more events. Register within the Early Bird period and you also have the option of getting your event T-shirt for only $5 CDN, plus GST. I am also hosting a post comp BBQ at my residence in Nanaimo - tickets for that are $20. This year we are also modifying Snatch only to make it more interesting and potentially more competitive - perhaps we can get some people trying a bell weight heavier than they are used to, and give them that nudge to keep blowing forward with their progress. All of these options are available at www.gripstrength.ca/registration.

EP. 029 | Brittany Van Schravendijk, Coach, Blogger, Vlogger, Kettlebell World Champion

In this episode we have the honour of speaking with Brittany Van Schravendijk of "KB Fit Brit".  Brittany is a kettlebell sport lifter with multiple records and achievements under her belt.  Her full bio can be found on her website here.

We covered topics like:

- why and when Brittany stepped into the Ice Chamber gym

- spreading her wings beyond the San Francisco / Berkley area

- why she started making kettlebell technique videos on youtube

- the upsides and downsides to online resources

- youtube celebrity changes the game

- ask not what you can do for your organization, but rather what your organization can do for you

- what does the organization offer other than a ranking table

- combining ranking tables gets messy, why bother?

- out of half a dozen organizations, "I don't think any organization thus far has totally gotten it right..."

- how do we create diversity in competitions, while integrating them all into a cohesive calendar?

- what is the appropriate time between competitions?

- the value that consistent training has in your progress, in the absence of obvious changes

- mental training, and ideas on how to get the most out of post-comp reflection

- a good program should challenge you and build confidence, rather than crush you

- shit happens when we think "more is better"

- you can't peak all the time - there's is a reason behind pulling yourself back

- "[Denis] isn't ready to lift 32's all the time..." - professional weights take a toll on your body

- overcoaching...it happens.  By game day, the work has already been done

- the check-in (ask your athlete what they need before you overcoach)

- different lifters benefit from different coaching

SERIES: RUNNING A FITNESS BUSINESS: Creating Team Culture

Our April In-House was a blast!

We were so happy to see new people take to the platform, and grateful for our friends from Victoria for making the trip to Nanaimo.

We had a total of 14 lifters who participated, and Rachel jumped in twice to fill out half empty flights, finishing the day with 5 sets of kettlebell!

Most lifters made rank numbers for at least one event, and following everyone's individual sets was a 4 Team Longcycle Relay.  We had two mens and 2 womens teams, comprised of 3 members each, lifting 3 minutes each.

Overall Longcycle Relay Team Award went to Rod MacMillan, Matt O'Brien, and Jeff Bremer (Score: 113).  And the Top Women's Team Award went to Netta Buczek, Pat Marshall, and Rachel Robertson (Score: 122).
