Grammar in Use: Mastering the present simple.
Ready to explore routines and general truths? Let's introduce the present simple tense!
This is your go-to tense for talking about things that are generally true or happen regularly. Think about nurses who look after patients or the Earth that goes round the sun. These are actions that are consistent and factual.
We use the present simple to describe:
The structure is straightforward: for I, we, you, they, simply use the base form of the verb (work, go, do). For he, she, it, you'll usually add -s or -es to the verb (works, goes, does). Remember those spelling rules for the -s/-es endings!
To ask questions and make negative sentences in the present simple, we use do/does: "Do you speak English?" "I don’t go away very often". Don't forget that does is for he, she, it.
Interestingly, we also use the present simple for verbs like promise, apologise, suggest when we are actually doing that action by saying it. For example, "I promise I won’t be late".
So, what do you do every day? What things are generally true about you or the world around you? How often do you speak English?
