Grammar in Use: Mastering the present continuous

Ready to talk about what's happening right now? Let's dive into the present continuous tense!

This tense is your go-to for actions happening at the time of speaking. Think of Sarah, driving to work as we speak. The action isn't finished; it's in progress.

But it's not just for this very second. We also use the present continuous for:

• Things happening around now, not necessarily at this exact moment. Steve says, "I'm reading a really good book," even if he's on the phone now. He means he's in the middle of reading it.
• Temporary situations. "I'm living with some friends until I find a place of my own".
• Changes that have started to happen. "Is your English getting better?". Verbs like getting, becoming, changing, improving, starting, beginning, increasing, rising, falling, growing often appear in this way.

The structure is simple: am/is/are + -ing.
