Chris Tymeson on Conservation & Advocacy
Chris Tymeson, SCI’s Vice President of Government Affairs, described SCI’s advocacy work across six major areas. These include federal affairs, state affairs, international advocacy, the Hunter Information Service, guide and outfitter relations, and legal support. He explained that SCI works closely with lawmakers to defend hunters and protect outdoor traditions. Tymeson also shared his background in wildlife law and conservation policy. Tymeson detailed SCI’s ongoing efforts to protect hunters’ rights and ensure long-term hunting access. He emphasized SCI’s commitment to sustainable use conservation rather than preservation-only approaches. He highlighted issues involving predator management, endangered species conflicts, and increasing ammunition restrictions. SCI continues to fight these challenges to preserve hunting opportunities nationwide. During the interview, Tymeson addressed rising concerns affecting hunters and outdoorsmen. He explained how species recovery often reduces hunting access without proper scientific review. He also noted that SCI advocates for balanced wildlife management policies that support conservation and hunting heritage. SCI works to ensure hunters remain active partners in conservation efforts. Tymeson discussed SCI’s support for a clean continuing resolution to keep the government open. This ensured federal lands stayed accessible for hunters, including a terminally ill child’s final hunt. He also addressed visa delays affecting the annual SCI convention. Tymeson criticized a harmful provision in the Big Beautiful Bill that limited public land sales without public input. SCI continues defending public land access and hunters’ freedoms. http://SafariClub.org https://AmericanOutdoorNews.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On Target with the + One Mentorship Initiative
Chris Avena interviewed Justin Morrissey from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) to discuss the +One Mentorship Initiative. The program encourages hunting mentorship and shooting sports participation through partnerships with groups like the National Deer Association and Pheasants Forever. Originally built around pledges, the +One Initiative now focuses on measurable recruitment and mentorship to expand hunting participation and firearm safety education. Through +One, the NSSF created a national mentorship network that connects experienced hunters with newcomers. Morrissey highlighted scalable programs like Learn to Hunt, which teach outdoor skills and firearms safety in a welcoming, inclusive environment. He emphasized the importance of mentors who can adapt, communicate, and support new hunters with patience and understanding. The NSSF plans to launch a national mentor recruitment campaign to expand these efforts even further. Today, the +One Initiative includes over 62,000 mentors who reach more than half a million new participants each year. These mentors include hunting instructors, shooting coaches, and first responders who promote firearm safety and outdoor ethics. Morrissey explained that the partnership model is far more scalable and impactful than traditional awareness pledges. The +One Mentorship Initiative is helping preserve America’s outdoor heritage through education, inclusion, and mentorship. By teaching new generations about hunting, conservation, and firearm responsibility, NSSF and Justin Morrissey are ensuring the future of our hunting and shooting sports traditions. http://NSSF.org/plusone https://AmericanOutdoorNews.com #NSSF #+One #PlusOne #Mentorship #HuntingMentors #ShootingSports Learn more about your ad choices. One For The Record Books
In a recent interview, Aaron Smith from SCI Record Books discussed how the program honors hunters and preserves ethical hunting traditions. The SCI Record Book is more than a list — it’s a global recognition of dedication, skill, and conservation. Each entry celebrates the hunter’s commitment to sustainable practices and responsible stewardship of wildlife. Smith explained the wide range of awards and categories available through SCI Record Books. Hunters can compete in rifle, archery, handgun, and muzzleloader divisions across various regional and international species. These categories give every sportsman and sportswoman the opportunity to be recognized for their accomplishments and passion for the outdoors. To qualify for the SCI Record Book, hunters must submit verified field measurements and harvest details. Certified SCI measurers ensure accuracy and integrity in every entry. Smith emphasized that participation helps strengthen hunting’s credibility while contributing critical data to global wildlife conservation and management efforts. The SCI scoring system provides a standardized, transparent way to record and compare achievements worldwide. Aaron Smith explained that each measurement is based on consistent criteria to ensure fairness and accuracy. Hunt Like Teddy with MNR Custom Rifles
Matt Roberts, founder of MNR Custom Rifles, shared his meticulous process for crafting bespoke firearms. Each rifle receives countless hours of detailed attention, from hand-selected materials to precise finishing work. Due to the level of craftsmanship required, Matt produces only about ten rifles annually, ensuring every firearm meets his exacting standards. He begins each build with a solid foundation, often using factory actions such as the Winchester Pre-64 Classic or Mauser. From there, he customizes critical components like the bottom metal and bolt handle before moving to barrel fitting and stock work. This method guarantees performance, reliability, and timeless design for hunters pursuing big game around the world. Matt explained that many of his clients come from the African dangerous game hunting community, where reliability and stopping power are essential. Some customers arrive with detailed specifications, while others rely on Matt’s expertise during the consultation phase. His ability to tailor each rifle to the hunter’s needs makes MNR Custom Rifles a trusted choice for serious sportsmen. Specializing in English-style classic rifles, Matt maintains a strong dedication to tradition and performance. While he can build with either walnut or synthetic stocks, he avoids projects that compromise integrity or design. His philosophy is simple—create rifles that honor craftsmanship, precision, and purpose, built to perform flawlessly in the world’s toughest hunting conditions. http://MNRCustom.com https://AmericanOutdoorNews.com #customrifles #africansafari #dangerousgame #MNRCustom #Biggamerifle #safari #Big5 Learn more about your ad choices. Project ChildSafe - Promoting Gun Safety
My interview with Joe Bartozzi from Project ChildSafe focused on promoting responsible gun ownership and secure firearm storage. Project ChildSafe is a nationwide program that provides free educational resources and firearm safety kits. The program partners with local law enforcement to distribute gun locks and safety information across communities in the United States. Its mission is to reduce firearm accidents, misuse, and theft through awareness and secure storage. Since its launch in 1999, Project ChildSafe has significantly improved gun safety nationwide. Over the past 25 years, firearm accidents have decreased by 40 percent, a major achievement for the program. Originally called Project HomeSafe, the initiative began with federal funding under the George W. Bush administration. Today, Project ChildSafe continues its mission by offering free resources and safety materials to gun owners everywhere. Its long-standing success highlights the importance of education and responsibility in firearm ownership. Bartozzi explained that Project ChildSafe now partners with more than 15,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide. The program operates across all 50 states and five U.S. territories, making it the largest initiative of its kind. Beyond law enforcement, it has also formed partnerships with about 13,000 local organizations. These include faith-based groups, gun shops, and safety instructors who help distribute firearm locks and educational content. This network ensures that safety information and resources reach as many people as possible. We also discussed ways that communities can get involved with Project ChildSafe. Local organizations can share promotional materials, host educational events, and participate in fundraising efforts to expand outreach. By spreading awareness, communities strengthen firearm safety culture while preventing misuse, theft, and suicide. Bartozzi emphasized that Project ChildSafe was built by gun owners for gun owners, hunters, and shooters. Its focus remains on protecting families and communities by making secure storage a standard practice. http://ProjectChildSafe.org https://AmericanOutdoorNews.com Learn more about your ad choices. Protecting Your Freedom to Hunt
In this episode of the American Outdoor News Podcast we are speaking with Laird Harrberlin, the CEO of Safari Club International. Laird explained that Safari Club International (SCI) works to protect the freedom to hunt worldwide. SCI promotes wildlife conservation, ethical hunting practices, and global outdoor education. The term “safari” means a journey, not just African hunting. SCI’s mission is to protect hunting rights across all continents. Laird compared SCI’s role to the NRA, stressing the importance of membership in both organizations for hunters’ rights. Laird and Chris discussed the challenges facing the global hunting community. They stressed the need for unity among hunters to counter anti-hunting campaigns. Laird warned that opponents often use emotional narratives and misleading data to influence policy. He cited polar bear hunting bans and the Cecil the lion controversy as key examples. Both agreed hunters must share factual, science-based narratives to protect sustainable hunting practices. While addressing Industry Challenges and Policy Reform, Laird emphasized that infighting within the hunting community weakens advocacy efforts. He called for stronger collaboration between hunting organizations. Some groups, he noted, focus more on fundraising than real conservation achievements. Laird also discussed the need to modernize the Endangered Species Act. He believes science-based wildlife management should guide policy decisions, not emotion or politics. This approach would secure hunting’s future for generations. Laird promoted the upcoming Safari Club International Convention in Nashville, February 18–22, 2024. He called it SCI’s largest fundraiser and networking event. The convention offers hunters, outfitters, and conservationists a chance to connect globally. Laird shared personal stories of his family’s involvement, showing the event’s significance. He encouraged all hunters to join SCI and directed listeners to the official SCI website for membership details. http://SafariClub.org https://AmericanOutdoorNews.com #SafariClubInternational #SCI #HunterAdvocacy #HunterRights #HuntingRights #AmericanOutdoorNews Learn more about your ad choices. SCI Fights for Florida Bear Management
In a recent interview, Bee Frederick of Safari Club International (SCI) discussed the return of Florida black bear hunting. Florida has a long history of managing its black bear population through regulated hunting seasons and conservation efforts. Legal bear hunting ended in 1992 but briefly returned in 2015. It was paused again due to public backlash. Now, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is considering a quota-based bear hunt for fall 2025. Frederick noted that Florida’s bear numbers have rebounded significantly since the 1970s, especially in heavily populated regions. SCI supports a science-based wildlife management approach that includes sustainable hunting to help control growing bear populations. The FWC will meet in August 2025 to evaluate population data, safety concerns, and public feedback. Frederick believes this hunt would offer a model for ethical, conservation-driven wildlife policy across the country. SCI continues to advocate for hunters' rights and supports fair, data-backed hunting regulations in Florida and beyond. If approved, the 2025 Florida bear hunting season would mark a major milestone in proactive bear management. http://SafariClub.org https://AmericanOutdoorNews.com #BearHunt #SCI #SafariClubInternational, #FWC #FloridaBearHunt Learn more about your ad choices. Bringing Back the Wild
In a recent interview with American Outdoor News, author and wildlife biologist Michael shares insights into his latest book, Bring Back the Wild, a powerful narrative exploring the intersection of hunting and global conservation. Influenced by legendary writers like Robert Ruark and Jack O'Connor, Michael describes how his passion for Africa was shaped through both literature and experience. His storytelling blends science with adventure, recounting memorable encounters—like staring down a crocodile and tracking an ostrich—on his latest African hunting expedition. These real-life adventures, infused with cultural significance, aim to educate readers and inspire a broader appreciation for ethical hunting practices. A key theme in the conversation was the critical role hunting plays in funding conservation efforts worldwide. Michael explains that excise taxes on hunting and fishing gear contribute over $1 billion annually to state conservation programs—without federal oversight. His sixth book expands this dialogue by comparing conservation models in North America, Europe, and Africa, showing how well-regulated hunting positively impacts wildlife management, habitat restoration, and rural economies. For Michael, hunters and anglers are more than sportsmen—they’re the financial backbone of global conservation efforts. The interview also touches on generational influences and reading preferences. Michael reflects on how classic outdoor writers inspired his lifelong love of the outdoors, while Chris shares how Peter Capstick and Theodore Roosevelt shaped his early interest in hunting literature. With the rise of audio books and digital content, Michael observes that younger generations—his son included—prefer consuming outdoor stories in more accessible, mobile-friendly formats. This shift, he suggests, could make conservation literature more engaging and widespread among new audiences. Rounding out the interview, Michael dives into his hands-on fieldwork and personal hunting stories, from brocket deer in the Yucatán to conservation success in Mozambique’s Katadata 11 region. He emphasizes that hunting is not just about the pursuit but also about sustainability, culture, and community. Highlighting how crocodile hunting can provide vital protein and economic value to local villages, Michael underscores the importance of using the whole animal—a concept deeply rooted in tradition and ecological responsibility. His mission is clear: to help both hunters and non-hunters see the vital connection between sustainable hunting and protecting the wild for generations to come. http://MikeArnoldOutdoors.com https://AmericanOutdoorNews.com #BringingBackTheWild #OutdoorWriter #WildlifeBiologist #Africa Learn more about your ad choices.
